Is he good at drafting? Is he the reason to your amazing scouting. If so, can we borrow him for a few years?
Honestly I don't think so. The same pattern we saw under Yzerman seems to be happening in Detroit now, whereas our more recent drafts havent yielded much promises.

This is not me saying JBB sucks or anything. I just dont think we are the best drafting team in the league anymore, with or without Al Murray.

the more recent drafts aren’t old enough for us to know what we have. We just pulled perbix in the 6th round and that was 2017. Who knows what we might have in the drafts after that

When did this org no longer value picks?

Point? 3rd kuch 2nd Colton 4th

We've drafted value in later rounds. You need draft picks in order to do that. We are looking at a scorched earth version of win now. We will be basement dwellers for years
JBB definitely has a different philosophy than Yzerman. Still remember when Yzerman traded away Brett Connolly before the 2015 run just to recoup picks lost in the Coburn deal.

Besides the draft though, it's up to the amateur scouts to find undrafted free agents too. Tanner Jeannot, who we just traded a ransom for, was once one such guy. Bolts might have found a legit prospect last year in Declan Carlile which helps supplement the loss of draft picks.

Doesn't feel good seeing 6th rd pick Cole Guttman with 16 goals, 30pts in 39 games for Rockford (AHL) as a rookie, and now 2 goals in 6 games for Chicago, and 7th rd pick Sammy Walker with 22 goals, 42 points in 46 games for Iowa (AHL) as a rookie. At least we get to enjoy Perbix this year.

Interesting part for me is when he spoke about how close the two franchises are. He said they've wanted Jeannot for a while now and they have been scouting him for that long. So they know him well I guess
Yeah Jamie Pushor said a similar thing in the Times article from yesterday

“But I think the genesis of a trade usually starts a few years before. It’s like, ‘I liked to watch this guy play in the AHL, I watched him play on a bad team. We watched him play a playoff game.’ And then it’s like, OK, if he becomes available, maybe he’s a guy that we want.”

That was the case with Paul, who the Lightning had watched for years in the AHL and with the Senators. The more they saw him play, the more their interest grew. Whether Tampa Bay will be able to unearth another gem remains to be seen, but Pushor and his pro scouts have developed a strong track record.

“It’s a long process,” Pushor said. “It didn’t start a month ago. Five years ago it started. I think that’s probably what we take pride in, is just like doing the work every day so that when it matters you have the information to make a good decision. That’s it. It’s a lot of going to a lot of games and doing the work and getting reports in and then trying to make good decisions as a group.”

They chose not to play here though. They wanted a shot at the team, and they went where they thought they'd make the NHL quicker. They wouldn't have made the team this year, and even next season might have been a stretch for them too.

Yes, Perbix was not a JBB pick though. And we tend to see them coming a few years out. I think enough time has passed to say we aren't seeing Cirelli and Point type gems. We knew those were homeruns within a couple of years.

Yep, but we can take credit for selecting those 2 guys even if somebody else gets to enjoy them.

wow. not only did JBB get us Jeannot, but he gave the entire organization the day off on the draft? what a king.
If he could just figure out a way to deduct he scouts salaries from the Cap he could give them a couple years off without pay and impact the Cap……..

Make it happen JBB!!

Big difference both Sussions and Paul had mutiple successful years before signing those long term contracts Jeannot had been year of elevated scoring a term contract is not warranted yet. Want to give him 2 x 3 great he has to show he can repeat his production. Heck a one year show me contract is in order really , it tells the player we’re interested long term in him and dangles that carrot out there for reward.

It really depends on the AAV.

Let's say its a 6y/$2M AAV contract. If he bottoms out at 10-10 player who hits like a dump truck, can play defense, and be a general pest. Its still not a bad idea. His value at $2M exponentially grows if he scores more than 10-10. With the cap growing (maybe not next year, thanks Bally), $2M locked in for 26 year old power forward who can play all situations is extreme value. I personally think playing here, his point production will follow Paul's. So I think he will be closer a 15-15 guy, maybe topping out around 25-25. I am more than happy to lock him in long term because either way, on the low end and on the top end, its still a good value contract.

Elliotte Friedman on the Tanner Jeannot trade:

"Well haven't we seen this for years? Barclay Goodrow, Brandon Hagel, Blake Coleman. Why are we surprised anymore? The Tampa Bay Lightning have shown when they are in this window, and they're still in it, they're going all out. They're sacrificing the future for the present. They want cups. They've got cups. They want more. That's where they are. The moment the Maple Leafs went out and made their move, and they're looking to make another one (Lafferty+McCabe), this is a team that said 'we are coming right back at them,' and we should have seen it."
"Initially I mentioned on twitter that I heard the Lightning had made a pitch for him, and one player in the NHL texted me and he said, 'Tanner Jeannot is Tampa. That is exactly the guy that they are going to go get.' And people looked at the return, and I admit when I first saw it I was like 'what, really?' A couple teams had told me the price was really high, they thought it was a couple of first rounders, but nobody was expecting that. But that is the Lightning's DNA. This is what they do."

Jeff Marek:

"This deal has a certain Bobby Clarke element to it in that, what did Bobby Clarke use to always say? 'It doesn't matter. We got the player.' That's the Tampa Bay Lightning, and that's Tanner Jeannot."

I just want to say a good "hopeful" career projection is Coleman for Jeannot.

Coleman was coming in on 2 20 goal seasons with top 6 minutes in NJ. Great contract for what he brought in. But his one "full" season in Tampa he scored 14 goals. That's probably right around where Jeannot will score in a full season with us. 14-15 goals seems like the reasonable number. 20 being higher end on the third line. After he left, Calgary paid $5M a year for that production and what he brings to the table. Jeannot hopefully is what Coleman brought to the table. If we can sign him long term at $2-$3M AAV, the value is huge for us. Paul - Jeannot long term is a real solid third line with 2 players who can easily jump up into the top 6 and help on the PP and PK.

I am still finding it hard to understand why people are freaking out the magic beans when we are in win now mode and Jeannot is basically getting an NHL'er who has proven he can produce, plays exactly like what made us successful before. The only valid argument I have seen is that we put all our eggs in one basket. I get that, but me, who all of you know is usually doom and gloom, is not looking at this as a bad move at all.

That's fine for a couple years but it's not sustainable. As we've seen it's not 1 pick for 1 player, it's multiple picks to get one non-rental player.

I guess when we do become sellers, we hopefully recoup some of these lost picks to rebuild with, if we trade Point before his prime ends for example, but the hole is getting pretty deep now. We've traded away the next three years of round picks?

Hedman has declined some already this season, and I'm not just talking about not repeating his prior career year. That's not a good sign for the shelf life of the current core, considering how important he's been to it.

Looks like we'll get to see Jeannot's debut against FL on Tues. If he gives us another Perbix-level hit on Tkachuk, I'll then say the picks were worth it.

I'll also say I'll be glad to see someone relieve Maroon of the enforcer duties.

Do we now trade Colton for a good young d-man? We basically trade draft picks for a good dman and replace good talented potentially scoring F for a good talented gritty F?

They're not trading Colton now. JBB made it clear its all about the current season. They need Colton for depth. They'll trade him in the offseason if they think they can't resign him.

So we just sit Names or Maroon or Bellemare every game? We have too many forwards. Not a bad thing but our biggest need seems to be more defense depth.

Another fun fact Naroon leads the Lightning with 87 penalty minutes. Jeannot has 85 penalty minutes on the year.

If you review the video of those minutes on the interwebs you'll see quite a difference in quality of those similar totals.

He was? Julien was the assistant GM but make no mistake he had his hand in that/those personnel decisions.
