Yzerman has got to be a jedi. That's the only explanation for this. A 23 year old 30 goal scorer who is also the best playoff performer on the team and has been the best forward on the team for the past 2-3 years and somehow he manages to get him on a deal similar to what people are paying average second liners these days.

Am torn. As a hockey fan, this is a great move and personally I'm glad that he signed so I can watch him when I'm in Tampa later this week. However as a Pens fan, I'm not too happy with him signing at such a great cap hit. 4.77m, and he's still an RFA at the end of it? That is a great deal by SY that just makes a good team even better.

Reminder: Florida does not have an individual state income tax.

I think this is the biggest reason for Tampas free agent success. Stevie Y is a great GM no doubt but being able to offer players a lower AAV compared to other markets for the same amount of real money going to the player is a huge advantage.

Its a slight advantage. Generally in areas where there is no or very low state-income tax, property taxes are extremely high in the areas you would want to live, which somewhat balances it out. Sure you could live in a dumpy county or municipality and bank a lot of that difference, but I doubt that is intriguing to most millionaires.

Yawn. You post this like it's somehow new information.

What IS new is that Tampa Bay is going to pay Kucherov 2 million per year LESS than he was originally expected to get. That is huge.

Tampa trades a guy like Filppula, Bishop gets moved, Boyle doesn't resign, and we can look into trading someone like Garrison or Coburn, possibly even buy out Callahan if we need to.

At this point, with Yzerman signing Hedman, Stamkos and Kucherov all to amazing deals this offseason... you're still doubting what he can do?

You're fun.

A huge advantage indeed. And an unfair one at that.

Sometimes with good teams up against the cap, somone gets screwed. This what happened here. When the ceiling can't budge, nothing to do but try to force a trade. Obviously the player didn't want to go that route, but there's no mistaking what happened here. I'm sure Kuch, no matter what you read, no matter what sound bites he gives about being able to focus on hockey now, is not thrilled today. He lost about $5 mil minimum today by my estimates. He's essentially playing for free for one season.

I definitely commend the player for not attempting to force a move via holdout. There are times to hold out, but this wasn't it. He's got a team close to the Cup, so he appears to really want to win by agreeing to this.

For those saying he'll make it up in 3 years...that's not a lock. Is Tampa going to add an additional $5 mil to just make up for it? No way, they'll pay him his market value, so he won't make it up, that money is gone. He could also get hurt and never sign another contract. Stuff happens.

Fascinating situation to follow. The fans and the franchise made out like bandits today, so well done for that Bolts fans!
