Amazing deal.

I wonder what the final year pays, as there could have been a concession to give him a high final RFA year to put him in a stronger negotiating position at that point.

Would offer sheeted him Montreal for 6.5 per. This deal is mind blowing. He must have the inside scoop on the cap going way up in 3 years

Feel bad for Kucherov... Thats just horrible for him. 41 playoff points the last two seasons. 65 and 66 points in the reg season and he doesnt even get 5 mill a year. What a joke. Once again rfa´s gets screwed.

guess he should have had a better agent, then.

not like he can't make out like a bandit in 3 years if his play warrants it.

I'm not feeling sorry for the guy.

Klefbom and Larsson are both steals at 7 years ~4.2 mill.
This contract isn't a steal but absolute robbery. Could have held out for what he deserves but I guess seeing other star teammates in Stammer and Hedman take cuts to keep Tampa a contender had an effect on him. I love seeing guys who care about winning more than getting paid. Love it.

This is probably the key part of this contract, and possibly why Kuch would have accepted a 3y deal as it could be escalated a bit higher than it would have been in a 2y deal.
All the other GMs are probably wishing Stevie got this deal done before arbitration season though

My first two thoughts.

1) How does Yzerman continue to do this? Does he have a drawer full of x rated pictures of all of this players or something?

2) Kucherov needs to fire his agent.

I am SO confused about all the comments on this thread.

"He'll be able to leverage a big payday at the end of the deal"

You people don't think TB would have given him 7x7+ if they had the room? TB will more or less pay him whatever he wants next time around if he's still in their plans.

And for people saying it doesn't feel good to make less than your peers, that's true in a normal job where you don't know up front what everyone else makes. Kucherov knows his worth, knows what his peers make and he STILL chose to sign the deal. Get lost with all that nonsensical garbage.

Wow, amazing deal for the Lightening, granted, they probably lose him in 4 years when he hits UFA or are going to have shell out big bucks. But that is the consequences of the salary cap, but they have an amazing 3 year window. Regret not taking him earlier in my fantasy draft.

Does this mean Point goes down?

You should. His play warrants it now. He might easily have a career ending injury before his next contract. The difference between what he got and what he deserves is huge.

Point likely sticks on the third line for now. They will probably see how he does until Callahan returns.

Who the hell ever said that?

Low taxes, nice weather, highly competitive team, great front office...who WOULDN'T want to play in Tampa?

Quite a few people said it. There were multiple threads during last season when the entire Drouin saga was happening.

This is either going to turn out really well for Kucherov or really, really terrible.

Sounds like you understand the comments exactly.

TB can't afford to pay him now, and they presently had the leverage. So he signed a deal that maximizes his leverage on the next contract to make sure he's paid what he's worth and then some.

You obviously don't follow sports much if you don't think this is a huge part of contracts.

I always despised Yzer age a player but as a GM he gets it. Its not about screwing a player out of money is about balancing salary in a cap system. Most GM's have not figured that out yet. Most people on HF think that a 20 goal guy is due 4.5 to 5 a 25 goal guy gets 5.5 to 6. 30 or more 6 to 9. Well in a cap environment that does not work. A few GM's have figured it out and are scaling back contracts. But many still throw money to the wind and end up with an albatross NMC 6 to 7 mil contract limiting them.

This is a good deal for both the 3 years gets Tampa past the next two tough summers and then Kuch will cash in. Im just guessin that alot of the envy comes from fans of teams who have GM's that still manage like there is no Cap.
