Apparently nobody on HFBoards knows how contracts are structured in the NHL. Kucherov's deal is effectively a bridge deal; these are always much cheaper than long-term deals for high end RFAs. Gaudreau's deal came in under 7 because it only eats one UFA season.

Everyone is freaking out over decent but not unexpected deals for RFA players, and it's really annoying to watch. "WHOA! THAT GUY SIGNED FOR AN AMOUNT OF MONEY AND A CERTAIN TERM! DOESN'T MATTER WHAT IT WAS, THIS IS CRAAAAAAZY"

I get it. Just really surprised by that 3rd year. 2 yrs x $4.5M per would've been the bridge that I would've expected. By then, Johnson, Palat and Drouin would have their situations settled and Filppula and Garrison's money could be re-directed to Kucherov and Kucherov would get to that LT contract a year earlier.

Great hockey market and potentially 5-7% of the cap are not the same thing. Just sayin.

You don't think other states/countries have property taxes, high insurance rates and other additional costs where your average NHL team is located? NYC, NJ, Boston, DC, nah....California? Psshh....it's all about even right? Lol...

Yes, other markets have higher tax counterparts than Florida, just as there are other hockey markets with cheaper options. Markets with higher taxes still pitch the advantages of playing in those markets such as the opportunities for endorsements, "big city" amenities, team culture, etc. And players do sign with such teams for less than they can get elsewhere for those reasons.

Must feel weird to be Kucherov and only earn slightly more than Alex freaking Killorn after the two seasons he just had. Don't understand why they locked him up first but somehow it worked out in the end.

You should. His play warrants it now. He might easily have a career ending injury before his next contract. The difference between what he got and what he deserves is huge.

and the sky might fall, too.
so what. I still don't feel sorry for him.
if he can't play hockey tomorrow, he still gets many millions of dollars. I think he'll be able to pay the bills for the rest of his life.

It's a good deal for the player, too. a fair wage and for only 3 years.

If he deserves more, why did he sign the contract? obviously what you think is a fair contract, or what he "deserves" isn't what the player thinks.

To ensure Alex gets paid before Vegas takes him.

Killorn had arbitration rights, Kucherov didn't. Now they get another season of Killer before he heads to Vegas.

Man. Would it ever be fantastic if Vegas takes Killorn. Hate to lose him, but he's going to hurt.

You and everyone else. Literally half my friends families' have migrated from NY lol. Florida is a NY retirement state. The weather is certainly better and NY government /taxation is out of control.

As for living here - as a professional athlete it's not bad, but the majority of markets (for example I am in tech) are grossly underpaid.

People complaining about it are probably the same people who use the argument that x_Athlete should sign in their city because of endorsement deals, status, etc. right? It's a fair trade in my opinion. With all the media coverage of the Lightning this off season maybe they'll be able to fill the lower bowl for a game or two.. I've been surprised by the spending of the two Florida teams this off-season as attendance is not one of their strong suits. I was looking at playoff tickets last year (until the dress code was published) when the Pens played Tampa and the cost of great tickets in the playoffs were about the price of top-row-lower-bowl in Pittsburgh. It seems the attention has shifted from Washington challenging us the most next year to Tampa Bay being perhaps the favorite of the three teams.

This is clearly a lie and BS.

We are ranked 8th last year well head of your own Pittsburgh.:laugh:

Well it makes sense he would be the one to be picked by Vegas. Young, skilled, and nice long contract. There's no better player on TB to be picked by Vegas.

The Wings had that chance. They blew it.

Stevie Y will get a statue outside the arena before this is over.

The citation to state income taxes is a bit overblown. Athletes must file state returns in every state in which they play games....called the jock tax.

A TB player would probably have about half of his income exempt from state income tax..which isn't bad...but Florida property taxes, sales taxes and cost of living might be expensive so that degrades the advantage a bit more.

If overblown you mean by that it's mentioned so much that it's become a redundancy then I'd happen to agree with you. But any other way I can't.

When you play half of your games in Tampa that jock tax is far less than it would be elsewhere. The tax break is an enormous advantage because it allows the team to give that player than he would have possibly gotten elsewhere. Toronto would've had to dig up something like $12 million AAV to even equal the $8.5 million AAV in Tampa for take home pay after taxes. Very few teams can afford a $12 million contract to give to anyone. That's also another advantage Tampa has because they can offer it for coins on the dollar due to tax breaks. For $12 million you're about a million and change shy for enough cap space to sign both Stamkos AND Kucherov. If that's not an advantage then I don't know what is.

As for cost of living, it's really not that much to live out here unless you want it to be. It's obvious that Derek Jeter's mansion that's the size of a Super Wal-Mart on Davis Island is gonna be worth a lot more in property tax than as opposed to living somewhere else.

Career-ending/altering injuries never happen in you world ?

They do about as often as cap increases that allow for a bigger pay day in a couple years!
The sun might not rise tomorrow either, but you know what - we don't need to plan for every possible negative outcome. Risk vs Reward.

The risk? He has a career limiting injury in the next 3 years.
The reward? He potentially gets a larger payday over his career due to timing of contract renewals. And gets the chance to play with a competitive team because he didn't handicap them on this first contract.
