How much leverage did McDavid have in making that happen?

None, obviously. But the guys who sign bridge deals like this one also have virtually no leverage in a league where nobody uses offer sheets. The Kucherov deal is a smart move based on the Lightning's contract situation over the next few years, but it's really nothing out of the ordinary for a post-ELC contract that doesn't buy out UFA years.

With all that talent I'll be shocked if Tampa doesnt hoist the Cup at least 1 once in those three years

But then again, that's the thing. The deal works under the assumption that Tampa wins a cup in the next 3 years. If not, it all amounts to a big meh.

Of course, I'm not saying it's a bad deal, but 3 years is a short time span.

Kucherov's timing is pretty smart really.
Consider we have Las Vegas entering the league in year 2 of his deal, and possibly a second team entering shortly after that...

Two extra team's worth of HRR should help inflate the cap plus who knows what happens with the CAD in that time. So he'll be hitting UFA at a point where owners have room to spend against the cap thanks to a quick influx of cash and before it hits a steady state again.

Taking a 2 year deal means he negotiates as an RFA possibly before the cap increases due to Vegas, and a longer term deal means that he's locked into a deal in this climate where contract values are surpressed thanks to the cap plateauing.

I agree that if TB doesn't win the cup in the next 3 seasons it's a big fail but this isn't a 3 year window. This makes it possible to keep their window open longer. This will make it easier on the team to re-sign Palat, Johnson and Drouin next year and then when Kuch needs an extension in 3 seasons we should have a few contracts coming off the books and that will really go a long way in giving Kuch a nice raise.

Also in 3 years those guys will be the vets and we will have fresh guys coming in. Brayden Point is a guy who is already knocking on the door. Brett Howden, Nikita Gusev, Adam Erne, Stephens is another guy who looks good.

Then on D we have a few guys (Koekkoek, Masin, Hajek) who can step up in the loss of Garrison and Coburn. Also possibly Stralman leaving in 3 years. Callahan and Filppula will be gone. Then Vasi is supposed to be a very good goalie and showed a bit of that in the ECF last year.

Their window is open for a while but I do agree that their next 3 years are probably their best chance at a cup as far as we know. They could still ice a better team when it's all said and done.

From a ******** DRW fan our backup goalie makes more than that. Conspirators believe Holland is on his way out sooner than later, Yzerman would likely be the first to be offered the job, do you think he would leave TB?

Nope. Cushy job in TB (great weather, great team he built, no in state tax advantage and an owner who would do anything for him). I'd say Detroit had their opportunity and blew it.

Why fix some other guy's mess when you just built a powerhouse. Unless he wants to show up Shanahan.

So signing a 7 year deal would assume that we win in 7 years then?

One would think Kucherov wanted a 7x7 deal at the very least, probably a Tarasenko contract. That doesn't work right unless we ship someone out. We tried shipping out Bishop to teams like Calgary and Dallas but it didn't work. Callahan is not moveable. While certainly servicable in today's NHL nobody would do us any favour and take Flipper off our hands either.

lol so what, we'll just extend Kuch for 8 more years after that, tons of space off the books in 3 years, could easily fit Kucherov at what he demands in 3 years time.

Make my day.
Meh, I don't see the excitement and WOW Amazing!!!! It is a solid dream for everyone. He's making about $1.5m less than others his age and level, but he only has to do it for 3 instead of 6 then he can jump ahead of them by that amount. It will ask even up.

Tampa gets
+ Contract they can afford
+ Security of not getting stuck with a big long term deal if he falters
- pay more if he excels (subbaned or Toewed)
- he can get away in 4 years

Pluses and minuses equal out.

I think a "wow" is entirely justified. If I was Kucherov I would have insisted on a 1 or 2 year deal if he was going to be giving a big discount like this.

Gosh people on here assuming Kucherov will get like 7x7 or 8x6 type money in his next contract...

Three years is a long time. If he slumps, GMs aren't going to remember his last two seasons/playoffs.

I hope everyone remembers this thread when he asks for 8.5-9 Mil on a 6 year deal on his next contract!!
I hope you remember in three years time, Tampa's cap situation won't be as dire as it is now, so... yeah. Not sure why you're so upset. I guess because Detroit has no idea what it's doing?

Ask Ovechkin, someone that Kucherov idolizes, btw, how many cups he won and how their success in the playoffs factored into him staying.

Maybe, just maybe, Kucherov likes the city, the eastern conference, being able to go outside without being followed by stalker fans or paparazzi, and of course his teammates.

Nah, Stanley Cups and money are all guys care about. Yeah, right.

If he does make 8 million on the next extension, tampa bay fans will be ecstatic because chances are he's probably putting up 70-80 points lol...

If not, he'll get closer to 6
