These are the kinds of deals that make me think RFA status will look drastically different after the next CBA.

With the NHL being more and more of a young man's sport, I wouldn't be surprised if the PA tried to negotiate more money for players in their arbitration years. 7 years is way too long for hockey players to be held under team control earning depressed salaries.

Maybe - but at the end of the day there's a limited pot of money available to the players. Easing up on RFA restrictions will help the younger players, but it will come at the expense of older UFAs.

I've been surprised by the spending of the two Florida teams this off-season as attendance is not one of their strong suits.

Tampa's attendance rank within the league, by year, since Vinik bought the team:

2010-11: 18
2011-12: 13
2012-13: 8
2013-14: 10
2014-15: 9
2015-16: 8

Since finally getting ownership that actually gives a damn about putting a quality team on the ice and providing a quality experience in the arena, attendance in Tampa has risen to the point where we are consistently in the top ten in the league. This past season Toronto averaged a grand total of 66 more spectators per game than we did. The Panthers are a different story but Tampa hasn't had an attendance problem since Vinik took over.

Stevie Y does it again. Lightning are a fun team to watch (I live in Florida). It's good to see that he will be starting the season

If this isn't the best contract in the NHL right now, I don't know what is.

Jesus, Stevie Y is as good a GM as he was a player. Insane.

Love it! Obviously attendance isn't the whole story, in regards to overall organizational health, but it does say a lot. Nice to see hockey doing well in non-traditional markets.

You and everyone else. Literally half my friends families' have migrated from NY lol. Florida is a NY retirement state. The weather is certainly better and NY government /taxation is out of control.

As for living here - as a professional athlete it's not bad, but the majority of markets (for example I am in tech) are grossly underpaid.

People complaining about it are probably the same people who use the argument that x_Athlete should sign in their city because of endorsement deals, status, etc. right? It's a fair trade in my opinion. With all the media coverage of the Lightning this off season maybe they'll be able to fill the lower bowl for a game or two.. I've been surprised by the spending of the two Florida teams this off-season as attendance is not one of their strong suits. I was looking at playoff tickets last year (until the dress code was published) when the Pens played Tampa and the cost of great tickets in the playoffs were about the price of top-row-lower-bowl in Pittsburgh. It seems the attention has shifted from Washington challenging us the most next year to Tampa Bay being perhaps the favorite of the three teams.
Yea, attendance is not one of Tampa's strongsuits even though they sold out every game last season. So sick of this garbage.

Every year teams sign rising stars to inexpensive deals that only buy out RFA years, and yet people here are somehow still surprised every single time. This board just has a mental block for understanding bridge deals.

Nice response! This "Tampa is not a hockey town" myth needs to die.

Better than your Oilers getting McDavid for 925K for the next two years? If we're ignoring the context of the deal, I think that one's pretty hard to beat.

yup. when do Callahan and Filppula's contracts expire?

Filppula's and Garrison's falls off in two years, Stralman and Coburn fall off in three years, when Kuch is due for a new contract and Callahan's falls off in 4 years when Vasy is due, and Drouin also, who should be most likely bridged as well next season. So the plan is there.

No way Tampa would have done 2 years considering who else they have up for contract that year. Plus the 1-year prior to UFA means that it's easier to get priced high enough a team might walk away in arbitration. So it does give slightly better leverage for the player.

Nobody really of note. Johnson, Palat and Drouin would all be the year prior.

Regarding all the whining about state income taxes: if you expect the league to adjust for those differences, what about differences in sales tax? Property tax? Capital gains tax? You can't argue that one form of taxation should be accounted for while ignoring all others. And how about things like the cost of living with regard to food, gasoline, heating/cooling, utilities, etc.? What about insurance costs? Or the many public benefits and services that are paid for by those taxes - why should the league account for the differences in tax rates and not the advantages that those taxes pay for?
