Gutted that we traded Hall. You guys are getting a dynamic player - creates a ton of scoring chances and works his ass off consistently. Makes some mistakes, but are mostly due to over-exerting himself when things aren't going well.

As far as Larsson goes, could you guys give me our opinions:
1) How good is he right now? A #2? #3? #4?
2) How good do you think he'll become?
3) Do you think he'll tap into more offensive upside as he gets older?

He's a #2. Arguably he's a #1, but the rest of the league doesn't really seem to agree and I've been known to overestimate the quality of Devils defensemen.

He can easily become a #1, but whether he's ever really recognized as one depends on the answer to your last question.

I have no idea if his offensive will develop. The underlying skills are there. Playing for Edmonton he should produce a bunch more assists through transition (remember just how bad New Jersey's offense has been), but I don't know if he'll ever really be a good powerplay quarterback. Maybe.

1) #2
2) Still a #2, but I would not put it past him to develop his offense more and become that lower-end #1 guy.
3) Yes, his offense comes from his vision and passing ability - both of which are incredible. Think of Larsson feeding McDavid with nasty outlet passes for odd-man rushes and breakaways because I have a feeling you'll be seeing that often.

Enjoy Larsson. I know losing Hall hurts but Larsson, in a silo, is a lovable hardworking player.

He is a #2 on your team and most teams. A #3 on a contender right now.

How good really depends on how you define a number one? Odds are the league won't consider him one because he won't be elite offensively, but I feel safe in saying he will be one of the better shut down guys in league.

I do think he has more offensive upside, especially if he gets PP time. His shot is meh, but he is a very slick passer.

If he can improve his skating he can reach some big heights. Either way you got an excellent player and your D is much better for it.

Santini's skating is better than average for a defensive-minded, physical D. Real leader on the ice, clears creases with ferocity, stands up for teammates. Rarely makes mistakes, very tough to beat one-on-one. A terrific blend of efficiency and snarl on the back-end. He's going to be very, very popular around here very, very soon.

Santini has minute-devouring playoff beast written all over him. I can't wait until he's in NJ full time.

Hall's attitude is great. Guy works super hard for all accounts I've heard. I think he really is hurt that he's been in on the rebuild since the beginning and now gets shipped off.

Hall sounded upset, kinda sad and shocked. (Of course)... But then his tone in his voice changed and he sounded pissed off and sounds really motivated now.

Looking forward to seeing in a Devils jersey.

Maybe trading for Cory as well? Know it was a pick but still a big move for a big time goalie. Extra credit for happening at the Rock.

Less impact because we didn't know who the pick would have been, and Horvat is good, but not exactly a superstar yet. But in terms of impact on the team's direction, I agree.

ooooh DAYUMMMMMMM

Well that bodes well.

Kid comes in with a chip on his shoulder I'm fine with that.

Prove Edmonton wrong by dragging this offense to the playoffs.

1) He's a #2 right now, absolutely a top pairing defenseman.
2) I think with a few more years experience, he could be a #1. Probably won't be elite due to his offensive ceiling, though.
3) He'll produce more as he gets powerplay time and more talented teammates, but I wouldn't expect him to drive offensive production from the back end or become a threat from the point.

All in all, you got a fantastic first pairing defenseman that is only entering his prime and will continue to develop. He won't be Shea Weber, but he'll be a great two-way player for years to come. Enjoy the tape to tape stretch passes to McDavid.

Let's start with Larsson is a very good hockey player.

Positives: Sound defensively. Smart player. Very strong and his work in the corners is excellent. Usually comes away with the puck. Excellent first pass.

Negatives: Skating is average. Foot speed is an issue. Is not a dynamic player with the puck. Offensive potential is limited by his skating but he is smart enough to occasionally jump into the play when there is an opening.

Larsson is probably a #2 or maybe even a 1a/1.5 (if there is such a thing) IMO.

Can definitely be a #1, not sure if his offense will improve a lot.

But I will say that all of his points last year were even strength points. He was not used on the power play a whole lot, not much at all since his rookie year. When he did get power play time, it was in garbage time or for a shift or two here and there. Maybe taking a spot if someone we used on the point was injured in-game. No critical power play time to speak of.

Well that bodes well.

Devils trade for Hall, PK Subban and Weber are traded, Stamkos resigns in Tampa, and Saugus comes back from the dead.

What an interesting day.
