I don't think it's fair to call Nylander's contract a bad RFA deal from Dubas based on how he played in the regular season.

The only thing we can hate was how it played out and that he was not re-signed a lot earlier.
Deal is fine on its own the problem has always been Dubas caving.

Nylander's contract is the one time you can not say Dubas caved. He was willing to let Nylander miss the 2018-19 season and he had his agent call Dubas at 4:30 PM EST before the 5:00 PM EST deadline to get a deal done.

With deal finally done, Nylander, Dubas breathe sighs of relief - TSN.ca

That’s not to say Nylander and Dubas both didn’t have their doubts whether or not the new contract would come together in time. To be eligible to play this season, the Leafs had to file Nylander’s signed contract with the NHL’s Central Registry by 5 p.m. ET on Saturday. It wasn’t until 4:30 p.m. that day Nylander made the call that would swing negotiations in the right direction.

How are you defining caving here though?

Based on the few leaks we had, the number seems to be roughly between the two sides to me (assuming Nylanders agent started at around 8mil per). Imp the bigger critique of the deal is that it should have been closed sooner

I remember that Nylander started out at $8.5 million because he was specifically using Leon Draisaitl's contract as his comparable.

Sure.

And yet you only hear about Matthews as a contender for the award, don't you?
That's still a fact which you can not deny.

We also hear about Matthews being more of a contender for it since he also finished 4 goals behind Crosby when he won it during the 2016-17 season and this past season Matthews was 1 goal away from sharing it with Ovechkin and Pastrnak.

How much money did Nylander lose by sitting out?

Every negotiation will have compromises. I don't necessarily think that's "caving". Each side agreed the player was worth just under 7 mil a season and they played around with the numbers to balance the math for that aav over the 6 years of term and in the end that resulted in him getting made whole for that year.

Imo I think folks get too fixated on "winning or losing" contracts (or trades for that matter) when in fact things aren't always as black and white as thay

I'm talking about perception, here. You're explaining exactly what I'm talking about. I'm not saying Tavares won't win an award. I'm saying Matthews will get more award hype.

Not sure if it's just semantics that you're picking on. If I could say it different I would. My post literally said Tavares is my favorite Leaf.

Not sure why Tavares was thrown out there again after he was clearly gassed on that last OT shift.

He had a good grinding night but again, but that's not exactly why he's paid the big bucks.

I’m so used to being disappointed by this team. All my life. I’m 38 and I’ve been a hardcore fan my ENTIRE life. Disappointed after disappointment. I don’t know what it is about our leafs.. can’t explain it, they just cave when it matters most. I’m sad. Not even mad anymore. Just kinda expect it.. just the truth. It’s normal for my team to f*** up when games mean something.
Matthews was great, he played hard but there are some highly paid guys on this team that look
sorta average. Back to the drawing board I guess. Goodnight crew.
