What happened to this guy? Ever since we gave him the C he’s been getting worse and worse. The injury excuse doesn’t fly anymore so what’s the deal? Extremely concerning to see him moving like a slug out there. At times it almost looked like he couldn’t keep up with the pace of the play.

All of this is fake and wrong

I don’t understand complaining about Tavares. The Leafs have issues, Tavares is not one of them.
He is still incredibly consistent, sometimes he can do more, sometimes he has an off game, but it’s almost like complaining about Sundin. You know what you’re getting night in and night out.

Tavares is probably the last player on the team I would think to criticize

The fact is that when the Maple Leafs win the cup there will still be people who complain. It's what they do.

The Maple Leafs could go 82-0 and sweep four rounds to win the cup and some people would still complain.

Why doesn't the injury excuse fly anymore? Because it doesn't fit the narrative?

He had an oblique injury that affected his summer training, and then broke his hand 8 games into the season. So just as he was getting his body back into shape, he all of a sudden couldn't shoot.

I like Tavares but after the deal which transformed our internal cap I’m also one of his biggest critics. This is a weird series and CBJ is good at shutting players down. He’s been getting chances and hasn’t been awful. Not 11 mill but I’ve learnt to stop viewing him in that light cause I’m kind of convinced he’ll never live up to that tbh.

I feel if he was Making 8/9 like he should we wouldn’t be having this thread. Dubas’ mistake to give him 11 shouldn’t be constantly held against him (although I’m sure it will and will only get worse)

lol

So he didn’t recover at all during these 5 months of quarantine then.

We wouldn't be having this thread for sure because he'd be playing in San Jose right now.

Leafs fans should remember that Tavares accepted $2 million less to sign in Toronto, since San Jose offered him 7 years and $13 million AAV.

That would be the worst signing in free agency in quite some time to be honest. I know it was rumoured but SJ really dodged a bullet there

I would not be complaining.

To be fair when Tavares signed in Toronto no one was expecting to see a flat cap because of a global pandemic thanks to Covid-19 and wasn't it expected to go way up if that never happened?
I did not see the 3 RFAs getting what they did

and the rest of the league seemed to agree that Dubas "new RFA paradigm" was utter BS ,,,no one followed his lead

That's a great point. The fans and media will always have Matthews to compare him to, and that's tough for him. He's a smarts and strength type player, not speed and finesse. Tavares willl be more under the radar, while Matthews will be in the running for awards.

I'm sure he's fine with it. But it'll mean he's appreciated a bit less than if he was the only star, like he was back with NYI.

My favorite current Leaf. There, I said it.

JT was 4 goals shy of the rocket last season

Things like that also happened long before Covid-19 effected the salary cap.
YUP, it was a double OFFA for dubas (bad RFA deals IMO,,that's on him ) and covid-19 no fault of his own

BUT i don't see him painted into a "impossible/crazy corner,
BUt it is a tight one)

lots hanging on sandy/lilly development

I don't think it's fair to call Nylander's contract a bad RFA deal from Dubas based on how he played in the regular season.

The only thing we can hate was how it played out and that he was not re-signed a lot earlier.

oh, i think it's fair about Nylander,,year one was a utter disgrace

if you compare his deal to his equals Ehlers/Kyle Conner/Larkin/Guentzel/ wellllll

this past reg season , i would say he earned it,,,not under BUT also not "extra value"

Without a doubt Nylander's 2018-19 season after he re-signed was horrible.

However others said he will play a lot better when he doesn't miss training camp or any regular season games.

I have no interest in hearing excuses, he got paid and cap hit 10.25 million last season ,
