Proposal: Tavares for Kopitar

Debatable. A lot of peolple bringing up that Kopitar will retire a King, and he will. The same consideration applies to Tavares.

Leafs are going to trade their captain, the Toronto kid who came home as a high profile free agent? For what? A minor contract improvement, maybe a small on-ice upgrade (to the "AINEC" brigade, let's be real here, we're splitting hairs between two very comparable players), but with added risk given the age difference.

how does the same consideration apply to tavares?

kopitar is a two time stanley cup champion, two time selke winner, and lady byng winner who helped his team win cups and has played all sixteen seasons with the kings. that script writes itself for kopitar retiring a king and deservedly so.

tavares has no cups, no awards, and has spent only 3 of his 13 seasons in the nhl with the leafs. he certainly scores more than most during the regular season and has made a few all-star game appearances, but he's likely to retire with the same amount of hardware he has now. it's not quite the same situation as kopitar, the script writes itself a little more disappointingly for tavares.
