I cannot imagine that other teams were looking to lock up Glass for 3 years. I can understand AV wanting him as some kind of reclamation project for 1 year, but 3?

Not sure what Steve Ott is going to get so this may be moot but I would much rather we spent the extra $ to get Ott since he can play, PK, fills in as a tough guy, and skate (IIRC). actually, his salary was $3.2M last year so that's probably too expensive... oh well.

Could just be my optimism but is it possible that AV feels Bylsma has put Glass in the wrong role and that is why his play suffered for PIT?

I agree, but I'd put the likelihood of a deal happening at 0%.

These kind of players get moved around a lot, but you are probably right. Since they are so easy to get, why bother signing if not planning on keeping.
Maybe the Rangers make him a better player, might as well be positive I guess.

Recap of Glass' season...

Tanner Glass was really, really bad this year. His numbers at even strength don't lie. First, we can look at the goal-based metrics. At even strength, Glass had the third-lowest points/60 among regular forwards and had the second-worst goals/60 among the same group. And to top it all off, he had the second-worst GF% on the team this year. In fact, he was so bad at outscoring the opposition that his GF% ranks 347th out of 375 forwards who played 41 or more games this year (spoiler alert: Taylor Pyatt is last on that list).

If we move to possession numbers at even strength, we get a similar story. His Corsi differential per 60 minutes of play and his fenwick differential per 60 were dead last among regular forwards on the team. He routinely bled shots against, and amongst that same group of 375 forwards who played 41 games this year, Glass had the honor of sitting 370th in terms of corsi differential. The point at this juncture is clear: it's nearly impossible to get much worse than Tanner Glass. He's giving you replacement level play.

His performance on the PK was equally ugly. He was second-worst on the Penguins at limiting shots against while shorthanded, true for both fenwick and corsi measurements. And when it came to giving up goals while a man down, the only thing that saved Glass from being last in this category as well was an abnormally high save percentage from Marc-Andre Fleury.

No matter how you slice it, Tanner Glass never looked like a competent NHL player this year.

Only good thing is it looks like he can't be any worse than he was last season so the only place to go is up!

to be fair, pittsburghs bottom players are awful. Glass also didnt play on an elite possession team...though you wonder how the rangers will do w/o their 2 best possession players...

Any good feelings I had about the Cup run have been pretty much washed away after the draft and today's fiascos. 3 years for Tanner Freakin' Glass. I'd rather give Bickel his spot for league minimum. Not like there'd be much difference in skill level and the Tuffboyz Fan Club would still be happy.

I'm not particularly thrilled by the offseason so far either, but jeez - that was the first finals appearance in 20 years, it's only the second time I've seen it happen in my lifetime. You're going to let the loss of Brian Boyle, Benoit Pouliot and Anton Stralman wash that out? You're going to let a suspect (but still relatively minor) contract to Tanner Glass tarnish the greatest moment in the last 20 years of Ranger history? It's not worth it, you've got to savor the good, it just doesn't come around enough. This is minor stuff, you'll barely remember it in 10 years, you will remember the playoff run.

Yeah, because this run is all we'll have when Hank retires without a Cup thanks to boneheaded managerial decisions like these.

your job is to make me feel better god damn it. not worse!

His job is to illuminate the underlying numbers in an entertaining manner. Humor is better at coping with pain than dealing with success anyway.

Are there any positive things being said about this guy?

If he winds up on the LTIR we don't have to deal with his cap hit.

We all can only hope this thread gets bumped in December for a healthy serving of crow then of course the inevitable locking of it.

Glass hits and he can win a fight. Two things the Rangers were lacking last season.

Glass had 247 hits in 789 minutes of icetime.

Boyle and Dorsett had 256 hits in 1,608 minutes.

I'm a Ranger fan, I expect that (though I doubt Tanner Glass will be much of the reason for anything) - that's exactly the reason why you have to savor the good.
