They got lucky. There isn't always a Toews in the draft, and you don't always win the draft lottery.

Even if you win the lottery is it going to be an Eric Staal or a Jordan Staal?

There is so much luck involved in the draft, but on HF boards every 1st rounder is a top 6 forward, and every top 5 pick is a franchise player. It's laughable.

So, let me see if I can put this into perspective for myself. You don't want to get rid of Phaneuf, Clarkson or Lupul because you might win or you might not, so lets not? Are you the ghost of corporate Leaf?

Wrong perspective but nice try.

Then I honestly don't understand how you are happy with this team and especially guys being paid to be the best players, yet aren't. Maybe you're so used to losing it scares you to think there's something else out there, like...winning.

So we are right back to where we were in 2006-2007...

A bunch of deadbeat contracts that need purging...and not a single prospect worth mentioning.

It's actually hilarious that some are even borderline content with the Leafs still.

New Jersey would have had the #10 pick but they get dropped down to #30 (Kovalchuk), which moves everyone up by 1 pick.

Sweet Jesus I wonder if we'll win another game this season. Sadly we're right where I predicted we'd be, fighting for the wildcard or, failing that, finishing as low as the top ten. We're going to finish 6th last if we keep this up.

I have faith the Leafs can get a top 5 draft pick.

Even if we somehow make it, Carlyle needs to go and Nonis while they are at it.

I think that's impossible but guys you have a top 10 pick. It might look like a weak draft now but that doesn't mean anything. Nobody will know until about five years from now, maybe longer. I know it sucks to barely miss the playoffs, as a Flames fan, it has happened often. Leafs have finished their rebuild though, they just need a few pieces to come back next season and play well! :)

Maybe you can't understand that things are more than just black and white. I never said I was happy with the team. So why don't you quit trying to put words in my mouth.

yeah the Hawks built their team entirely through luck. just like 85% of Leafs losses are the result of bad luck or injuries.

You don't think you have to get lucky in the draft?

Even if you have the 1st overall pick you still need luck. One year you get Mario Lemieux the next you get Wendel Clark.
One year you get Eric Lindros the next you get Roman Hamrlik.
One year you have Chris Phillips the next you have Joe Thornton.
Would you rather have Yakupov or MacKinnon?

So yes Chicago was lucky to have a player like Toews available at #3 in 2006. He should have gone 1st overall, and it would be no contest if the draft were redone today. Then Chicago was lucky again to not only win the lottery in 2007 but that a highly skilled player like Kane was available. So ya Chicago got lucky.

Just like Pittsburgh got lucky to have two generational talents available in back to back drafts. Imagine what their team would be like if they had drafted Toews instead of Staal in '06?

What bugs me the most is that if Leafs do somehow turn this around and make the playoffs (and I'll admit that it is getting less likely every day), you disgusting quitters will jump right back on the Leafs bandwagon.

It really is disgusting, isn't it?

I bleed blue and white no matter how good or bad they do.

So does Tank Nation. They hope for what's best for the team.

They're not hoping to miss the playoffs; they're hoping for the best pick possible because the playoffs would be almost impossible to make at this point. They would have to win every game of the season at this point. For the record, I'm still hoping they make the playoffs. It's too late to tank and next year's the one to do it.

There needs to be success for there to be a bandwagon. Leaf fans are as die hard as they come and being angry with this garbage is pretty justifiable.

Tank Nation takes the long view. When rojac was going all anti-tank in years past, all tank nation wanted was a shot at Patrick Kane, Steven Stamkos, John Tavares, Drew Doughty, etc.

Would that seriously have been so bad if we had lost a half dozen or more games back in the day if we had those kind of players to watch now?

I'm loving all the hysteria about the Leafs being awful, but it's really not true.

25 year old franchise goaltender, 25 year old top 3 NHL scorer, 24 year old top line power forward, 19 year old developing top 4 dman with top pairing potential, developing 24 year old top 4 dman with top pairing potential, 28 year old top pairing defender, deveoping 23 year old top 6 center with top line potential, 28 year old top 6 center signed to a very good contract long term.

Those aren't "the same as 2006-2007". And those prospects not worth mentioning? You have no idea what you're talking about lol

I guess adding age somehow infers promise. Bernier is in his first year. Even raycroft had one of those. Lets give it a year or 2. JVR is a big forward, not a power forward. Simmonds is a power forward. If you can't see the difference, well...lol. 28 year old top pairing dman is hyperbole. This is another poster's mo. Well, he plays 1st line center so he is a 1st line center. Doesn't mean he's a good one
