and young hockey players also tend to have peaks, hes got 4 months of great hockey and is still under contract so unless he wants to sign for cheap term im fine waiting a season

and no they dont regularly become a ppg player and continue to get better, most people arent josh allen, in fact I would say that its incredibly rare to go from trash to ppg in an offseason and then continue improving from there

I respect the ability to hang on to old baises in the face of new information.

I think it's fair to be optimistic about Tage, but silly to take it for granted that he will hit and surpass his totals from this year. And given he is still RFA after this contract ends, it seems prudent to wait until next year before extending him. Maybe it costs you a little extra, but at least you'll be pretty sure he's worth the extra. As opposed to ending up with a Skinner-esque deal you'll regret in a few years.

2 very different situations. Skinner happened because he got paired with Eichel during his entire contract year. Tage has stopped growing and has finally grown into his huge frame. Add in that he's away from Kruger, I'd be surprised if this year is not the norm going forward.

Tage is actually continuing and building on what he started last season when he became a full time player and tallied 7G, 12PT in the Sabres final 23 games. I don't think he's reached his peak by any means.

This from March 6th

Yeah you should absolutely, positively not give him a long term expensive extension this summer unless he is willing to sign for pennies on the dollar. His agent comes and wants a 6 year, 4M per deal? Absolutely sign it. But giving him north of 6M with any term at this point would be foolish. He's had a great breakout season...but always be leery of long term deals based on one good season. There's zero reason to rush a deal, we have plenty of cap space and can negotiate in season should he he come back strong again next year.

I would give him 6x6 right now. Another season like this one and he is 8x8.

If he's TT from the first half of the year putting up a lot of points and getting scored on a lot, he's a lot less exciting than TT from the back half, slightly outscoring the opposition while playing 1C.

The first player is worth something, the second player is worth alot.

Tage kind of had the Josh Allen thing happen where he couldn’t hit the net to picking the tiniest of corners. Also I thought he would never be able to develop his strength on the puck to the level It needed to be.

His defensive game has seemingly taken big steps this year and he's limiting the mind farts. These are things Im hoping wont fluctuate like goals and points. Tage has some freaky potential given his size, shot, silky smooth hands, and speed. He can be a force in this league if his defensive play continues to improve.

51 points in his last 50 games as a #1 center.

Scoring is up around the league so that probably is contributing some. I can’t wait for next season.

This give me so much faith in Granato, man:

These two quotes specifically fill me with optimism:

"There's more, you can do more," Granato said was his basic message. "Even when Tage hit 30, he and I had a talk, 'I know you're going to score more, you know you're going to score more, so we can celebrate this, but onward and upward, let's go. There's still more for us.' "

"As a young guy or guy without much experience, you're almost trying to prove your skill set and so you force a play," Granato said. "It's 'I want to make a play here.' Tage is at a point now where he's like, 'I don't have to make a play here. If there's a play to be made, I am going to make it. And I'm going to extend the possession long enough to see if that might open up or that might open up.' He's actually seeing layers of options."

Not only does he build an incredible connection with Tage that shows a lot of trust between the two, but Granato also knows the game and understands how young players grow within the game. The sky is the limit for this kid, and with Granato at the helm- Im for once confident he'll squeeze every bit of potential out of him.

Im also intrigued to see how Krebs develops under him.
