I don't see the Swedes continuing that 44 game round robin win streak this year though, and this is the first year in a while I've felt like it would be really difficult. They've had a lot of great teams, and in the years they haven;'t been right at the top they've seemed to be in the tad weaker pool. They definitely could still do it, but I see them losing to the US or Finland this year.

2011 was a weak year, weaker than this year, and they were in the same group as the eventual gold & silver medalists. So anything is possible, really.

Oh absolutely, and back entering 2011 the streak would have only been 12 games, maybe someone mentioned it somewhere but it wasn't really a talked about streak back then. The last 5 years or so it's been a when will Sweden's insane round robin streak end. If someone gave me 1/3 odds(75%) on it ending this year I'd take that. But yeah absolutely it's only the USA and Finland that's likely to challenge them, 2 games anything can happen, all 3 teams will be fairly close, I just have those 2 slightly ahead.

Some stats:

Position in tournament, year and established (n) swedish (star) NHL players on WJC team per season: (realistic shot at best national team today)

(?) 2019: 0 (Brännström?, Sandin? Broberg?, Boqvist?, Liljegren?)
(2) 2018: 3 (Dahlin, Pettersson E, Nylander A?)
(4) 2017: 4 (Dahlin, Nylander A?)
(4) 2016: 6 (Nylander, Kempe, Nylander A?
(4) 2015: 7 (Nylander, Kempe)
(2) 2014: 9 (Forsberg, Wennberg, Lindholm)
(2) 2013: 10 (Rakell, Arvidsson, Forsberg, Rask, Lindholm E, Wennberg)
(1) 2012: 12 (Klingberg, Brodin, Klefbom, Zibanejad, Rakell, Karlsson W, Forsberg, Rask)
(4) 2011: 12 (Lehner, Larsson, Klingberg, Fast, Rakell, Landeskog)
(3) 2010: 13 (Markström, Nilsson, Ekholm, Larsson, Ekman-Larsson, Johansson M, Silfverberg)
(2) 2009: 9 (Markström, Karlsson E, Hedman, Backlund, Johansson M)
(2) 2008: 9 (Hedman, Berglund, Backlund)
(4) 2007: 6 (Hjalmarsson, Bäckström, Hörnqvist, Berglund)
(5) 2006: 4 (Strålman, Edler, Bäckström)
(6) 2005: 6 (Strålman, Söderberg, Eriksson L)
(7) 2004: 4 (Steen, Eriksson L)
(8) 2003: 4 (Steen)
(6) 2002: 3 (Lundqvist)
(4) 2001: 3 (Lundqvist)

Did we do better when the "Boustedt effect" was new? (2009-14). Also, poor Henrik Lundqvist and Alexander Steen back in 2001-04...maybe willingness to join the national team for WC took a turn upwards from 2008 and on...

Första ispasset – så ställer Montén upp laget

Lineups from yesterday(Brännström & Sandin came later, seems like Sandin got on the ice to practice though. Lundeström is coming the 19th):

Bemström-Holmberg-Hugg
Höglander-Olofsson-Elvenes
Svenningsson-Bäck-Hållander
Leufvenius-Fagemo-Gustafsson-Södergran

Ginning-Boqvist
Ragnarsson-Lundkvist
Westerlund-Broberg

Liljegren did not travel with Sandin I guess?

Thanks for compiling that list. Theres a clear correlation to the failed WHC in Stockholm 2013 were the organization went approx. 30 million SEK minus and cuts had to be made in the Swedish Ice Hockey Association, on the youth departement for example.

Cool to see Södergran still there. Is the team set or are there still cuts? If there are cuts, what are his chances of making it?

A few players from the AHL are going to join the team: Lundeström, Brännström, Sandin and possibly Liljegren (if he's healthy). So that's one forward and 2 or 3 defencemen that will push other players off the final team. I think that just about everyone in this thread are hoping Södergran makes the team, let's see if Montén agrees.

Liljegren will not play, confirmed today.
