But why trade him? Doesn't make your team better today. Doesn't add assets to help your future.

Like how he was hurting the Sharks? If it's a rebuild, they're not wise to spend to the cap anyway.

And if I'm reading it right, the Sharks are actually take ON Cap this year (at least).
They got a first round pick.

They’re going to be bottom dwellers with or without Karlsson.

Yeah but what's the purpose? That massive contract was a 100 point Norris trophy winner.

Like if you're rebuilding, get assets for a rebuild. If you need cap space to sign players to compete now, dump the overpriced for whatever you can get.

The Sharks are doing neither. Cap space doesn't do them any good today if they're not trying to compete. And they didn't acquire much at all for futures.

You got me. I guess there is a method to Grier's madness here. I don't know enough about the deep workings of SJ's situation to go beyond knowing they wanted out from Karlsson's contract :dunno:

The contract was believed to have been untradable, even at 50% retained.

The guy won the Norris and the stars aligned to move him and at least get something in return.
I would add that the Sharks had to be thinking that Karlsson has a good chance of getting injured at some point over the next 4 seasons of his contract. Absolutely no point in keeping a guy with that cap hit for the next 4 seasons, risking not being able to move him at all if he goes down with an injury that keeps him out for a decent amount of time. It was either now or never.

Feels like the Penguins were able to shed a lot of money tied up in garbage contracts fairly cheaply.

Tying Karlsson's cement block of a contract on their ankle is certainly a future detriment, but at least it's only one. Meanwhile, they got to cast their worthless chaff into the wind for pretty much nothing when compared with how other teams have been getting squeezed to move far fewer dollars, even for just the 2024 season.

Not a fan of Karlsson at all irregardless of how many points he puts up. I don't think this trade will help Pittsburgh nearly as much as people think.

I'm not a fan either. Yes when healthy he puts up a ton of points. He otherwise doesn't play D worth a damn IMO. Also he is prone to injury & that will only get worse as he ages out of this contract. SJ got the better of the deal even with 13% retained. They got rid of that massive contract and got a first round pick, which they will need since they're rebuilding.

I thought Dubas might take a different approach in Pittsburgh after overloading high-priced offensive talent in Toronto. Guess not. Pitt should be fun to watch this year, but I wouldn't count on a Jennings trophy.

Because he has 1 year he was able to stay on the ice in the last 5 and has 4 more years of an 11.5 hit to go.

Getting out of that contract with no costly retention is a win. Last year was a massive fluke, not the norm for Karlsson these days. On top of that, I'll go out on a limb and say that despite losing the offense, the Sharks will win more games this year without him.

Wow. Difficult to make sense of this one.

Montreal gives up nothing. Gets Petry and a 2nd.

The Sharks give up the league's top defensemen. They get basically just a 1st.

I don't get it.

f***ing Habs made out like bandits.

Basically unloaded a bad contract in Hoffman.

Unloaded an extra in Pitlik.

Took on Petry and DeSmith which if I'm reading the tea leaves properly. they will retain and flip for more draft picks.

So to summarize Unloaded unwanted assets for potentially 3 draft picks. Cap space is the greatest commodity in the NHL at this time.

There's something to be said for you working "worthless chaff" into the paragraph!:thumbu:

It's funny how the media is calling Zach DeMelo an IndyCar driver. Dude's "career" in IndyCar consisted of being a part time driver in 2018 because his family paid for his seat to drive. Was an utter trash driver and never did squat in the actual IndyCar series, thus racing only half a season in his IndyCar "career."

Also had a history of threatening other drivers. Spoiled brat from Montreal posting on social media about being assaulted and posting pics of his teeth -- weird. I guess since his career in racing was a joke and being a luxury shoe salesman didn't work out for him he wants to be noticed again. Funny that DeMelo also claims to be a boxer. I guess he needs to train more. I'll wait to hear Sprong's side of the story before making judgement. At this point my money is on Sprong giving the little brat what he deserved.
