Man, did we really overvalue Step and Raanta that much? I figured an NHL caliber goalie alone was worth a 2nd/3rd pairing D and a pick? I hope they expected to pick up two centers in this draft, or we're going to have some major issues this season. Hank is really going to need to get his **** together for a full season!

Gut feeling...Glass the target?

Glass might be the best shot, I've not followed these guys that closely, but also a bit boring compared to Mittlestad, Suzuki and Petersson. Glass is exactly like Stepan in that so much of his offense just comes from getting into areas with that right hand shot on the ice putting the puck into open nets.

I love this trade and I am really really impressed with Gorton. Look 1-2 years down the line, this trade should be a no-brainer.

Thats way overvaluing Raanta. Goalies in general aren't worth very much these days unless they have a seriously impressive track record as starters.

When and what channel is the draft on? NHL is so amazingly bad and conveying basic information about the league.
The NHL's true demon is marketing. Penalties, goal-scoring, equipment...all fluff in the in grand scheme. Their website is an epic failure. I didn't even know the draft was today...which is admittedly more my fault and not the league's.

Have no doubt Arizona took advantage of us in this isolated trade based on the exchanged value of hockey assets. However we need to step back to see a big picture from JG and FO perspective, because they received specifically what they were looking for and that wasn't available elsewhere:

1. A high draft pick. There are only two options: they are going into a rebuilt or recognized that a prospect pool needed to be replenished and having 7OA is a pretty good way to start. However to me it also looks like an asset a trading partner might be looking for so the Rangers can receive a player back to fill in a gap created at C with a premium quality
2. Young offensive RD. I have no doubt that it was a targeted acquisition for a long haul, or again something that a potential trading partner would ask for. As opposed to point 1, to me the former is likelier then the latter.
3. No additional salary came back to the Rangers. Again, I think it was a requirement to accommodate something that has not become known yet and was a requirement to address apparent lineup deficiencies at C and RD

As we rationalize this trade we need to take a look across the NHL to see what other team would be a good trade partner to fulfill all these requirements. This is an explanation for the return the Rangers received.

P.S. Health issues and upcoming NMC are other factors that led the Rangers on this path as well.

People last year: Nash is gonna return a first, A prospect and young roster player

People this year: Stepan is gonna return a first, high upside young roster player, A/B prospect

People next year: Zucc is gonna return your next four years of first round picks

With 2 or so exceptions, most of the board came around with an open mind to my idea that it was NECESSARY that we move Stepan.

A couple of posters, who I am not naming, swore, no, no, a thousand times no, we could still eat Stepan's 6.5 and not worry about his clause beyond July 1, and he would be good enough to lead us going forward, and it was ONLY cool to move him ONLY, ONLY, ONLY if the ridiculous, greedy calls for massive overpayment were met in total capitulation by AZ.

Now that you have been proven wrong,
bernmeister laughs in your face, and says you deserve this arrogance to your comeuppance.

With the repudiation of the win now crowd, now maybe we can properly build and compete.

have faith.....!

calling it now. if the rangers dont bring in a top c, they will miss the playoffs

For a retooling season I could live with that. Would give us this years pick 7 and 21 plus at least a top 15 pick in what is supposedly a very strong 2018 draft, as well as a season to evaluate whether guys like Hayes, Miller, Vesey are 'true' top 6 players. We'd role into the 2018 offseason having a much better idea where we are as a team and what we need going forward

Yup. The other night I couldn't find out basic info about how to watch the expansion draft, now tonight the regular draft.

I think the site looks nicer than it did previously, but the hierarchy of information is a disaster. The front page has articles on each specific trade but not one direct link that tells you the draft is tonight, is on NBCSN at 7. Have to hover over schedule and pick draft from the subnav... just going to the schedule shows you games in October but nothing about the draft. Disastrous web design from a functionality standpoint.

We make the playoffs even without a top C.

imagine zibanejad taking an injury. you then have the completely lackluster kevin hayes as your top center. with all players who are better on the wing below him. hell, even if zbad plays 82, we are now one of the weakest teams at the most important position in the nhl.

yeah i guess so. whats the point of having guys like lundqvist and nash though? there isn't one. if this is the route theyre going, its time to fire sale.

Bern... I gotta say... You've been the conductor of the Trade Stepan Train for a very long time. The vindication must feel good.

Yea but we're going from a dumpster fire defense to a pretty formidable one when we sign Shattenkirk.

Have to think Nash is either gone today or at the TDL.
The Rangers should move Hank IMO, but it's a lot easier said than done. $8.5m is a lot for a goalie who is 34 (35?) and with what he's done for the organisation the fan backlash would be immense

Am I the only one who really really likes this trade? One of Pettersson/Necas/Makar/Glass will be available at 7th overall and they all have elite potential, something NYR has been lacking. As long as we grab one of them I'd be very happy

Plenty of people like the trade. It's just a few very loud posters who come in every 10 minutes to complain about it.

would the backlash really be that immense though?

last season id have been with you on that. and also wouldnt have wanted lundqvist traded.

but now? whats the point? id rather see the guy win. if theres a taker they should find him a new home before its too late.

beyond wonderful
again, nothing vs the guy, just that he was always worth more to us in a deal.

Stepan was simply not as amazing as some insisted he was, and overvalued accordingly.

If we make the correct selection w/the pick, this will be highly profitable for us.
In the meantime, we have upwards of 6m in instant cap relief, which is useful also.

We can go after not only zib, but get ahead of other contracts and sign long term for lowest avg/yr based on volume discount.

come ride the little train that is rolling down the track to the junction.
etc [Petticoat Junction now meets Rachel Maddow Debunction Junction meets
bernmeister, tells it like it is]
