I agree. He's starting with the wrong assets, and not getting enough value.
I can tell you are a big Stepan guy and I am too but it was a good trade. Stepan is what he is. Ttuthfully he is probably gonna go on the decline instead of the upswing. I hate saying that but its true. He isn't a physically gifted player and even his hockey IQ has gone down the past 2 years.

fair enough but...

you've got mika and hayes now as roster centerman. nieves waiting to earn the 4C spot.

step and lindy both gone leaves a huge hole in the middle.

unless we draft an impact kid in this draft who can play atleast the 2C, not sure where this move leaves us. there has to be a pivot deal pending.

do we offer the 21 OA plus a player/prospect for duchene ? would a return of holden and ryan graves be enough ?

what would we need to add to the 21OA to get back matt ? or is it the 7OA plus graves ?

is there a deal there ?

Remains to be seen.

If I were to guess right now, I'd say the Rangers are more interested in re-stocking than maintaining. I think they somewhat realize they are not one of those inside track teams at the moment, even if they swap out Stepan for a guy like Duchene. They used a lot of assets to go for it, and now they need to take a step back.

Gut feeling...Glass the target?

I mean I don't doubt he took the best offer.

But why deal your 27 y/o 1C for magic beans when you have Gank, McD, Nash, Zucc. Makes no sense.
Its not quite that easy. In order to make a trade, you have to have something that the other guy needs. They needed a center.

We obviously weighed the return, plus the fact that Steps salary comes off the books, and that his NTC didn't have time to kick in as worthwhile to make the trade.

You cant just throw random players in their direction (it used to be a favorite trade fantasy here... getting rid of 4 "deadweight" players for 1 good one in the same trade, etc).

Stepan is a good player. A very good player.

But I also think people are downplaying the value they got for him here.

We're focusing on everything but DeAngelo's talent, and we're almost dismissing having a 7th overall pick.

I think the Rangers would LOVE to come away with Glass. Not sure if he is there at seven.

Also note sure if the Rangers don't move both first rounders to ensure they get their guy, be it Glass or whoever.

I was a little disappointed at first because I wanted a better prospect than DeAngelo (character concerns) or another draft pick to include Raanta, but i'm excited about having a top forward (I hope) prospect tonight and the cap room.

I think we had to trade Stepan or get stuck with his NTC. I think Stepan is a nice player, but I always thought he could be a 65 point guy. He frustrated me because he had a great IQ (always got in great position), but didn't finish like I thought he could. There was always that hesitation before a shot.

He looked really bad in the playoffs. I think he has peaked and has had some wear and tear. I wouldn't want to get stuck with him in a couple of years at that cap hit. Just my opinion.

We take a hit back now to move forward in the future. I think it was the right thing to do. I do hope that Gorton continues in that path.

Gorton on DeAngelo: He’s a puck-moving, right-handed defenseman who can run a power play, a little different element than what we have."

They like DeAngelo

Let's not forget Step had one of his worse, if not the worst, scoring droughts of his career last year. I don't think it was a mirage. In the playoffs, he just looked out of sorts, wasn't in the play and couldn't keep up with the pace.

Oh and with Chayka saying this afternoon that he's been after Gordon to trade him Stepan for a year now, I thought we should have squeezed a bit more out Arizona.

No reason to kill Step. But it is fair to opine that his best hockey is behind him.

DeAngelo is probably the single best young player Arizona would be willing to part with. I felt that way before the trade went down and proposed 7+DeAngelo+Hickey.

I think Gorton did well, if it fits long term with what you guys want is up to you but value wise it was great.

Love this move. I wanted him traded last year instead of Brassard. Stepan's decline began this past season when he went 18 games without a goal. He isn't fast, not a good skater. Great hockey mind, above average passer. but, he will be out of the NHL in 3 to 5 years.
