You know, I didn't really consider the mileage factor either. Just goes to show you I really overreacted today at this trade.

The more I see, the more I think it is good.
Plus Stepan is not exactly a physical specimen. Your hockey IQ can only get you so far. His skating is already one of the worst...in 2-3 years it might be even worse.

I mean, I feel like we should have gotten more, but we didn't. I have no doubt that Gorton did his best to get what he could. Maybe Stepan's value was less than I thought, and I have no reason to be upset.

Let's put it this way. DeAngelo's upside is certainly higher than Stepan's. But that's how you get a player like that plus a first -- you take a risk on character or other issues.

What is the cap space being used on? Thornton? Shattenkirk at best?

Hard to say but cap space is an asset in today's NHL. Just look at what Arizona got Hjalmersson for

I did the same thing until I really started to analyze it

What's DeAngelo's upside? Top-4? Top pairing?

I think top-4 from what I am reading is about right

I mean I don't doubt he took the best offer.

But why deal your 27 y/o 1C for magic beans when you have Gank, McD, Nash, Zucc. Makes no sense.

Its not like we got peanuts. we got 7th and a former first rounder who has huge upside. I do think people overvalued Stepan. Its not like he was a all-star or was 65-70 point player. Also the cap hit might have bene a factor too as well as his lack of skating ability

Let's compare this deal to the deal the Rangers got for Brassard last year:

Brassard for Zib + 2nd in 2018

Stepan for 7th overall + DeAngelo

I would say the Stepan deal brought back more

solid 2nd pair guy once he gets acclimated.

certainly a 3rd pair pp point guy right outa the gate

he is legit on the pp point. makes good reads and can shoot it. skates real well.

I've seen him here in syracuse when he played here quite abit.

his offensive talent shows immediately.

faster more talented mike del zotto with an edge or a dan boyle type guy (when he was with tampa)

Because the clock was ticking on Step with his NTC going into effect in a week locking the Rangers into 4x6.5 for what looks like a declining player.

Maybe ... just maybe a guy that fixes our PP.

Definitely adds something we've lacked for a while now.

The wear on Stepan is a good point. I think that out of the 2008 draft, the only player who has played more games than Stepan if you combine regular season and playoffs is Doughty, maybe Stamkos, I'm too lazy to count right now. The point is he's in his prime years if you look at his age (27) but he's likely already on the downside when games played is taken into account.
