no one has traded a 2018 first yet and they won't. What if Stepan has a bad season next year. Raanta is free agent and would want 2-3 million.

It had to be done now. Deangelo still has high potential.

To be fair, I don't think it was a smart move for Arizona, and I like Stepan.

Long term this move has potential for the team because of the wiggle room in a rebuild.

I'm not reading through all of these posts to find out more about DeAngelo, who I admittedly know little about.

All I can say is that at quick glance, in a weak draft year, this looks poor. We should have gotten at LEAST an early second rounder to go with the First and DeAngelo....and even then, I'm not so sure I like it.

In any event, we're suddenly not so deep at center anymore...but we did dump a lot of Cap. That's one thing I feel good about. We just opened a LOT of space. Should be exciting to see how we use that space (I realize some is dead space due to G's buyout...but still).

The other thing that everyone seems to be missing is, where is the backup goaltender now?

Hank had a **** season, no matter what any of his apologists might say.

Who is his backup?

How is it Poor. Stepan has never had a 60 point season, cant skate, win faceoffs, and has a pretty big cap hit and a NTC that kicks in. I like Raanta but he is a backup right now. remember how we overvalued Talbot? This is good return. Plus we have a load of cap space too

You really think they aren't working on that now? remember whne we traded Talbot... we got Raanta the same day. people really need to chill

I'll reserve judgement on this trade until we see what happens the next couple of weeks with the draft/free agency.

It's the first indication (along with the Girardi buyout), that Gorton is jettisoning the old guard and building towards the future. That's a good thing.

At the same time, the Rangers just gave away a very capable 27 year old 2-way center, and a very very good backup for a pick and a defenseman who has not yet established himself as an NHL'er. It's risky.

Its all about a defined direction on where the team is going to go. This is more of a cap dump/ (dare I say it) rebuilding type of move. I'll be happy if the Rangers dont half-ass it. If this is the direction the Rangers are going, I'd be happy to see more of the old guard leave.

Apologist? More like chill honey child 4 real...

They are just going to ride out the King for the next few years so they team doesn't nose dive during the rebuild. Sorry Hank. Best homegrown Ranger.

I would sign our old friend Chad Johnson and give him a shot. Let Allaire work his magic.

You have to reserve judgement on this deal for at least a couple years. You have a young dman who needs time to round out his game, and a high draft pick who needs years to make it to the NHL. Weeks don't tell us anything.

Waiting years would be the smart thing, and I hope the Rangers finally do it.

Most likely, they sweep out the old contract, and fill it with other stuff.

Finding a backup goalie is the easiest thing to do. Raanta has his fan club here, and he played well, but we can easily find a goalie for 1.5 or less to play 25 games and play relatively well.

You know, if the cap space created in this trade can then be used in a trade that is lopsided money-wise to move Staal (e.g. the suggested Bjugstad/Demers for Staal deal), it becomes a lot more palatable.

(Though I still would've liked to have gotten more value for Stepan.)

i cant agree.

i was never in the Step must go camp,
but his no-trade was coming soon, his Cap hit was high,
and there were parts of his game that were limited and werent gonna change

7th overall is a huge asset if our scouts don't blow it

same thing with our pro scouts - there are more UFA's and lower-price trade guys avaialble than ever

up front the team is still built around Nash, Zucc, Zib, and (hopefully getting more consistent) Kreids, Miller, Hayes. Buch and Vesey should be better

there is always risk to big moves, but the this was the right time and a fair return

Gorton says Deangelo "is a player we wanted" and team did due diligence on his background. Adds "he can run a power play"

Gorton has been pretty good at evaluating these guys he trades for. Sounds like they wanted him for a while

Well. That should put to bed most of the absurdities I have read in this thread. They wouldn't want him as a main piece if they had legitimate concerns over the kids background. Although I am sure even if DeAngelo puts up 55 points or something crazy, there are still people who would take Girardi over him because Girardi is a nice guy.

At the rate Gorton is going, next year is going to be a complete mystery. I mean, really, a huge mystery. I said it a few hours ago. I've said it for the past few weeks. This team is going to look radically different to start next season.

DeAngelo can easily go end to end and was outscoring OEL at one point. You guys will love him.

The next couple of weeks most certainly will determine if thats the view we should have in general for this team moving forward - Im not talking about this deal in a vacuum.

And for the people who get giddy about top 10 picks, the reality is we will be lucky if said player develops into a player as good as Stepan.

Yeah, I don't know why people saw this as the Yotes dumping DeAngelo. As a hockey player, he's exactly what this team has needed for a long long time.
