This! With MacK waiting in the wings (literally ) the Avs could easily afford to let Stastny go if he didn't want to take a discount. It will hurt next year, but by 15-16, MacK will be a top 10 C in the NHL. Something Stastny will never be, even if he is paid like one.

you have high expectations for mack. i think this is the first year that tavares solidified himself as top 10 C.

I will miss seeing Stastny in Avs burgundy and will really dislike seeing him in a Blues uni. He's a great player and a class individual and I wish him all the best when he's not playing against the Avs.

I don't have any problems with Stastny's analysis that he would most likely would have had to take on a role behind Duchene/MacKinnon or be traded should he have stayed on the Avs and instead chose to go to a contending team where he get to play on the top line.

He's probably spot on and made a good decision for him.

Considering Avs had Iginla in the pipeline the second free agency started, it stands to reason they knew Stastny were gone and weren't willing to fight very hard to keep him.

Sounds to me like both teams got what they expected here.

Just wish he was born in Buffalo or something.

I dont like Casper but his 2 way game is very good underrated in fact. Thats where its goin to hurt the most for us. Iginla can put up the same numbers but casper can put up 60 and be very responsible defensively. Mackinnon at this stage in his career aint even in the same league defensively as mr. ghost.

Iginla can put up better numbers. 2009-10 was the only season where Iginla didn't outscore Stastny. I think Iginla's ~10 extra points a season will off-set any drop in the overall defensive qualities of our forwards.

The only thing about it that bugs me, is that he had to go to St. freaking Louis.

I hate the Blues.

And now we'll have to hear even more garbage from their fans.

The only silly thing about this is that Sakic did not trade him in March....thinking he could sign him for less money....that was so naive!.....I said it months ago....Stastny is not sentimental and will take the money and run.....it's normal....it's a business....now let's sign Oreilly for 5.5 Million for this year and trade him during the year because he is like Stastny.....let's not loose him for nothing in two years like the Slovak.

I don't know why anyone has a problem with this. I think it's pretty clear from the prices Moulson and Vanek got, that the Kesler balk ruined the market.

They obviously tested it, and didn't see much of a return. Made way more sense to just keep him with the team rather then upset team chemistry and send the wrong message when you're having such a successful season.

If you think it was hard on guys like Nate, Landy, Dutchy, and Barrie now, imagine what would have happened to this young team in the heat of the stretch run.

Having him with the team for the playoffs was the right move IMO, and it would have been even more obvious if they had got past the Wild.

I agree with this. A lot of people say a pick would have been better, they would have made the playoffs anyway, etc. but I don't know that one could say how things would have been. It was big for this team to have had the season they did, winning the division. It's that success and taste of it that you can't take away ftom them. The perception given to the franchise. Iggy wouldn't have come here if he didn't feel they were a winner, that was clear from his presser. You never know what trading Stas for pennies would have done. It's worked out ok right now and I'm ok with that other than coulda shoulda.

If Colorado had been willing to go to 6.25-6.5m for the same or more term, do you think he'd have taken the Blues offer?

I don't personally, but I never imagined the Avs would let him go for free over a few 100k. Even if after a year or 2 when MacK was more proven and ready to replace Stastny. Then they could have approached him about a trade for a better return rather than nothing at all.

Stastny himself said he knew eventually he'd be replaced by MacK. I highly doubt he would not have been open to a limited NTC for when the time came to move on.

Lets not shiet on stastny on his way out.
Solid 2 way player deserving of his payday.
We just couldnt afford him.

I have a feeling AVS wouldn't budge from the 6 mil.
6.5 and stast would of stayed.

We could have afforded him, but what we felt his value was to the team was different than what he wanted. He isn't a 7mil a year player, but kudos to him for getting it. But if the Avs really wanted to keep him at any cost, they could have signed him, they took the smart approach and kept within a budget they believed was suitable to Stastny.

Here's the thing that bothers me about this, Staz has played like a number one every time he's been in a real nhl level system (exclude the Sacco years). I expect him to do very well with St. louis. If you want a prediction, he will be over 70 points every year of his contract .

I don't think any Blues player gets 70 points under their system. Stastny will still be an excellent 55-65 point 2 way center for them.

I really don't think they could have afforded him. The cap on this team came together faster than anyone really expected. Tbh 6m is really the max they could have afforded.

Stastny should not have been traded back in March. They were having a hell of a season and you trade one of your top guys at the time? What kind of message does that send to the other guys?

Yes they could. If they wanted to

-CBO Wilson or trade him for a pick
-CBO PAP or trade him with no salary coming back or with a player in Winchester's place at <1m salary.
(I find it hard to believe they could not unload him for a mere 7th round pick. They tried to get a return that had worth, not just unload him)
-Save more money by acquiring a less than 3.6m fringe top 4 defenseman

even over guesses what Stastny needed to stay and leaves room for ROR to get more than 6m

Could it have happened like that, sure anything is possible. But it's assuming a lot that they'd buy out both players. I'm not even sure if PA's could be CBO because of the timing of that contract. Nobody was going to take on 8m in salary without giving a contract back. I'm not sure Stastny would have stayed at 6.5, you have to assume more cushion for Barrie and O'Reilly, their deals could be more and I don't think they are comfortable being within 1m of the cap at this time.

Do you think he would have stayed if the Avs gave him similar enough money?

Edit - Assuming that he knew he wouldn't be the number 2 center in a couple of years.
