Not heartbroken about this. Duchene-MacKinnon has been the future of this team since last June. He's too good to be a 3rd line center. He'll look really good in a Blues jersey too. It just seems to fit perfectly. He was great while he was here, but the team obviously has a plan and having a 7 million dollar third line center in a few years was not in the plan.

This is the real reason.

Paul Stastny just told SportsNet a big reason he chose STL was the Blues' puck moving D .. In other words the #Avs still need a big D splash

Leave it to Chambers to misinterpret that and make him look bad. He didn't say it in comparison with Coloroado, obviously. He said it as a reason why he chose St Louis in general.

7 million is too much for him just like 6.6 was too much for him.

I really hope the Avs don't bring him back once his time in St Louis is done.

Yeah, he is just being positive about his upcoming arrangement. I don't take offense to it. It's true too.

I know what Stastny was trying to say, but I thought this sounded funny:

Where do you think Blues will be in 2-3 years?

Stastny: “Still competing for a Cup. I look at St. Louis and their window to win a Cup is now, and for the next seven or eight years, so I’m excited.”

He's obviously saying the team will be good for a long time, but the "still" and "a" makes it sound like the Blues will still be trying to win their first Cup.

It's always tough to see teammates go but it was an honor and great time playing with @PaulyWalnuts26 and @PAParenteau. Wish you the best.

They will be. St. Louis is and has been paper tigers. A lot of skill, but not built particularly well. They still don't have a serious starting goalie. As long as Elliott is their option, they'll succeed in spite of their goalie, something championship teams rarely if ever have to say.

Backes is their captain and supposed leader, and despite his positive attributes, he's not mentally tough enough to put up with the playoffs. When things go wrong for Backes, he gets cheap and borderline dirty. That's fine (if undisciplined) if you're not the guy a team is taking its cues from.

There are some warriors on the team-- Sobotka, Pietrangelo, Jackman, Oshie (off ice issues aside.) But for every one of them there's a Bouwmeester or a Berglund who shrinks when the going gets tough.

St. Louis's only legitimate hope for the playoffs is to wildcard in against the Pacific and hope whoever emerges from the shootout in the central is too banged up to ice a full roster. Also, hope that Los Angeles is struck by some hex and doesn't bury them.

wtf stastny, I wanted him to stay.

How can you be my favourite player if your on the [MOD] blues team

Stastny sucks anyways.

:shakehead

One thing I'm happy about is that it really seems as though they tried to keep him but they couldn't make it work. If he would have signed for $6M per year with the blues, I would have been pissed but $7M for a guy who most people consider a 2nd line center is crazy. Good for him.

Was this you in your Staz jersey today? :P

I soured on him the last couple of years, glad he bounced back a bit this season. For 7 million I'll pass the guy was overpaid for a long time and giving him 6+ would be a mistake...that's just too much for a guy that's behind Duchene and soon to be Mack(although he could've stayed at RW).

All the best Stastny overall you've been solid for the avs.

Never saw this quote yet.

"Colorado was great to deal with but we just could not match up on a deal," Keator told the Post-Dispatch on Tuesday after the signing. "As we went through the UFA process and Paul looked beyond Colorado, the Blues became the best option.

"Paul took less money and years to sign with St. Louis because it is his hometown and the team is a (Stanley) Cup contender."

I found this quote to be indicative of the difference between the two franchises:

"I said, 'We're going to have to go substantially past what your average compensation is and both players — to their credit but not surprisingly — said 'We want to win ... you go do what you have to do to make us a better team," Armstrong said. "So with that knowledge, it was much easier to move forward."

Would Sakic have ever consulted the Avs top money players on such a "structure" related move? Apparently it's OK to ask them to sign "structure" friendly deals in the interest of winning, but too hard to do what Armstrong did? Stay classy Joe, I'm sure grandpa Iggy will structure the Avs to the promise land.

Landing MacK 1st overall and then winning the division the following season has its karmic equilibrium consequences. Roy wins the Jack A' award and the universe realigns his altitude. Priceless.

I'm not sure what your post is trying to say? The Avs never offered anything close to what the Blues offered. Keator is talking about the Blues compared with other teams who were trying to lure Stastny away.

Avs wanted Stastny at under 6. He's not saying he left the Avs for less money in St. Louis.

Avs don't need to overpay a guy like Stastny. They weren't desperate for a top 6 center.

Two different teams with two very different sets of financial circumstances. We could not afford to pay Paul Stastny like that & then proceed to bury him in the depth chart. And what this structure suggests is that the Avs are carefully monitoring their future expenditures, not protecting the egos of their players... a ridiculous, presumptive thing to have gleaned from that quote, if you ask me.

This! With MacK waiting in the wings (literally ) the Avs could easily afford to let Stastny go if he didn't want to take a discount. It will hurt next year, but by 15-16, MacK will be a top 10 C in the NHL. Something Stastny will never be, even if he is paid like one.

What are you talking about? Armstrong probably went to his players because they've been playoff flops for 3 years now and need to do something.

I don't get it. Stastny at any age is a worse player than Iginla. We won the day folks.

I dont like Casper but his 2 way game is very good underrated in fact. Thats where its goin to hurt the most for us. Iginla can put up the same numbers but casper can put up 60 and be very responsible defensively. Mackinnon at this stage in his career aint even in the same league defensively as mr. ghost.
