Starfield - Bethesda Softworks - Release Date - Sep 6th 2023

If you haven't noticed, the level of each planet and star system is displayed next to its name.

Thanks. I thought that I was done with Cydonia, but I hadn't finished that mission. I just completed it and was actually able to get 17K from him by choosing the bottom option, about paying extra, first.

Yeah I realized this shortly after posting haha.

I’ve had the game freeze and crash on me a few times now. It goes to a black screen then back to the Xbox Home Screen (playing on a series x).

Seems like some cities are harder for the series x to run than others. Like Akila City for ex. seems to cause some trouble at times, like momentary stuttering etc.

I noticed this yesterday. Crashed once in the loading screen and once when I had just found this abandoned factory. Also took very long loading several times.

Question on the secret code quest.

The planet where the quest is on says level 30 and I’m level 9. Is it doable now or better to wait?
You’re totally fine doing it. I think I did it at level 7 or 8. The sooner you do it the better otherwise the reward won’t be as meaningful.

When I did it the enemies scaled to my level iirc.

not hearing good things about this one sounds like it fell short of the hype
People who watched the direct and still didn't know what they were signing up for - idk what to tell em. It's exactly what was in their big showcase in June. And honestly I feel like it surpassed my expectations so far by quite a bit.

Are you playing on PC? because that does appear to be a lot of the issue

Digital Foundry released a video yesterday in which they said right off of the bat that "the PC version of this game is, indeed, the best way to play it, full stop" before going over the issues with it, anyways, which were:
  • No FOV slider
  • No DLSS
  • No anisotropic filter setting
  • Lower than expected performance on non-AMD GPUs and CPUs
The thing is that it's easy to overcome the first three with mods, INI tweaks or control panel settings. If those are issues for you, you need to spend only 15 minutes to fix them, yourself, and then they won't be issues any more.

The remaining one is an issue that users can't fix on their own (without upgrading their hardware) and will need to wait for patches or driver updates, but the game still runs pretty smoothly, just at a lower framerate. This isn't like Hogwarts Legacy, The Last of Us Part I or Jedi Survivor, which all had serious stuttering and VRAM issues on release. As DF pointed out, Starfield has no shader compilation stutter and uses less than 8GB of VRAM. In fact, compared to other major PC releases this year, I'd say that it's actually one of the more polished on Day 1.

I didnt like it at first but now i am getting hooked. Its kinda rough in the very beginning. But now as my character is getting stronger its becoming better

I’ve liked it quite a lot since the beginning, but it gets better and better the longer you go. Still haven’t touched base building and have very little interest in it. Hopefully that doesn’t become required at some later stage.

I was completely detached from any hype for this game. It's a Bethesda game...expecting perfection is preparing yourself for disappointment. Even the great Bethesda games are buggy as hell, were a couple years behind the rest of the AAA market graphically, and full of quirks and nonsense that you either loved or hated. I always had fun with these games, I just never look back on them once I put them down. I played a ton of Fallout 3 for a couple weeks and never went back to finish it. Skyrim was a fun ~100 hours a dozen years ago, but I haven't had any desire to pick it back up since I had to pause it for finals. I put probably twice as much time into Fallout 4 and also haven't been back since a few weeks after release. Fallout 76...no.
All that is to just say...I know what one of these types of Bethesda games is going to be and despite not learning a second thing about Starfield before release...it is exactly one of those types of Bethesda games. I truly do not understand some of the expectations I've come across. Half of the stuff people are mad about not being in the game is stuff I don't want in the game.

The last time I learned anything about Starfield ahead of release was that dumb E3 showcase several lifetimes ago. I didn't get hyped for it then, though I fully expected to play it because that was also my reaction to Fallout 4 & Skyrim before it. Getting hyped for these games only leads to disappointment. I was as hyped for Fallout 3 as I've been for anything and I bounced off of that game hard because my expectations were just too high. This being a GamePass game without further financial buy-in for me is probably the only reason I'm playing it at release and I'm glad I am. I'm enjoying this. Is this an all-timer? Hell no. Did I expect it to be? Their last game was Fallout 76, let's be serious for a second.

I think going in blind was one of the few good ideas I've followed through with lately. This is a Bethesda-ass game with all the quirks and quibbles that go with that. It's fun. I'm having a blast. Every bug I've encountered has been of the charming/hilarious variety aside from one (optional) quest item spawning underneath some rocks.

If the words 'only played the main story' is in the things you heard, they're morons.

The meat of the game is in the side quests some of which are absolutely spectacular.

Respectfully disagree.

I haven't either, nor have I finished the story. The side quests and exploring are just fantastic. Also, the side quests are where the meta weapons come from.

Here is my averaging gaming sesh:

Okay let’s find this artifact. Oooh a new city. I wonder what side quests I’ll get here. You want me to deliver research halfway across the planet? Let’s get it. Oh look some creatures over there. Let me go fight them. Oooh a base in the distance? Gotta check that out. But wait this cave is along the way, might as well look at it. Gets messed up by random dinosaur creature. Ok let’s just walk by this guy for now. Explores cave. Now to that base. Gets hit with another side quest. Well okay I’ll help you out. Why is a ship parked in the middle of that canyon? I gotta see if I can take that. And so on.

Will I even complete that original side mission? Maybe. Will that artifact be found today? Hell no

The only bug i have ran into so far was the talk to representative chisolm side quest bug. Walked past him, never talked to him and now he is gone and the side quest is gone from my activity menu.

I read that i am not the only one who has encountered this though.

Upgraded my nvme in large part to be able to install this and BG3 on the same drive. BG3 takes 160gigs with the saves and with just a few more things, I barely had any space for Starfield. Cloned my drive (thank you Macrium) and now I have 2TB of NVMe M2.

In any case, I have to expectations for this one other than I hope this is a classic Bethesda game. I remember a lot of people hated Fallout 4, but I really liked it. Loved building bases too, it was a blast to me. Just started Starfield and the performance is good on PC on Ultra and 2K up to now. Loving the graphics too. I'll probably update as I go further along, but for the next few weeks I'm pretty much only playing BG3.

Ran into another glitch. Some weapons that i put on one of the weapon racks in the Razorleaf ship disappeared. Thankfully they weren't guns that were anything special.

Now i know to not store any weapons there in the future lol.

So based on the response I got here, most of what I have heard appears to be wrong, I won't say all of it because chances are It's not perfect.

But the majority of what I have heard appears to be wrong and that's a good thing I was thinking about picking up a series X just for Starfield.

Such a fun game! I'm at level 12, did about 2-3 main story missions, a few faction missions, and a bunch of random stuff.

I've been trying to get to particular system for a mission.... and let's just say that many many hours have gone by and I'm still not there. Surveyed multiple planets along the way. Cleared out an abandoned research tower. Fought off crazy wildlife. Blew a bunch of ships out of the sky. Boarded and hijacked a ship. Discovered a bunch of caves and minerals. Crafted some weapon mods. Picked up some pretty sweet guns. Helped a farmer fix some satellites.

The random stuff is the best.

It's a Bethesda game. If you like their previous games and like outer space, you'll probably like this also.

I'm up to 30 hours, level 20, and I finished the Sam Coe questline so I'm rolling with Barrett for now. I have three ships now but I'm rocking the Trader Railstar for now, I might make my own soon, I'm swimming in money. Main quest spoilers below, don't look if you haven't finished the part where it splits into three

I've been to four Temples and got their powers but they seem underwhelming this far. I did get Force Push, just need a light Saber now

Was super sick so stayed home from work and no-lifed the entire Ryujin quest line. A lot of fun, honestly.

I also got a moddified magshot which seems like a must - completely leveled me up in combat.
