as per the NHL 2022/2023 rulebook.

Hooking near the hands is not a penalty. You can hook a stick even if it's near the hands.
You have always been allowed to hook a stick and the idea that its a penalty because the stick is parallel is complete bs and not in the rulebook. I blame the refs that don't actually know the rules and the colour commentary that also know very little about hockey

Rule 55 – Hooking
55.1 Hooking - Hooking is the act of using the stick in a manner that enables a player to restrain an opponent.
When a player is checking another in such a way that there is only stick-to-stick contact, such action is not to be penalized as hooking.

the refs need to stop with these soft calls

I think the call falls within the established application but I would consider it soft. You have to parse the rule very carefully, though.

A literal interpretation would say hook can be called if there is both body check and stick-on-stick “hook”. If there is no other checking body contact then the stick-on-stick would not be callable.

The huge question was would Bob be sharp after the long layoff? That is the only way FL can win. If it is old Bob this series is done in 5 with Lyon playing the final 3 games

Bob was fine. The 3rd goal was really the only one you could question. The difference in this game was Florida wasn't as sharp as usual and took too many undisciplined penalties. They'll be fully dialed in game 2. The long layoff hurt them, but I still think in the end the rest will be beneficial for them. Even if they don't win it, imo it'll make for a longer series.

A few thoughts:

Florida was coming off a long layoff and looked a bit off. Bobrovsky was really good, regardless of the stats. He had 5 or 6 amazing saves.

The reffing was atrocious. The Vegas missed cross check from behind should have been a game misconduct. The league review was also bizarre in this one, I expected that high stick goal to be analyzed for 10 minutes and they took 10 seconds.

Vegas had some solid play, and took advantage of the officiating and bounces. That one save by Hill was crazy.

This game showed the weaknessess of both teams as expected before.

Florida:

Dcore is terrible, usually you are used to seeing elite Dgroups to make the final 4/finals and this is the exact opposite of that.
Also the 4th line is something Vegas can really attack defensively

Vegas
As Parkkali said Hill can’t move, you need to put pressure on him and make him move.
Dallas didn’t really test him one bit in the last series, Florida has superior top9 and that’s where they can win the series.

Still think this will go to Vegas due to the defense.
Vegas has closer to Carolina like defense while having the better forwards (vs Carolina)

Which ones of those ghost penalties were undisciplined to you. Vegas was and is better team, amount of help they got from officials was ridiculous and ruined whole game.

So I was at the game… am I the only one who thought Florida looked terrible? Fumbled a lot of easy plays. Couldn’t complete a pass.

Vegas normally looks suffocating but I felt like Florida just was awful
FL was definitely not as sharp as they have been.
They had energy to burn, but they weren’t really clicking last night.

Florida’s stars have shown more brightly individually in their playoff run but for me Vegas are just a machine and they have far less holes and weak spots up and down their line-up. Their bottom six forwards and bottom pairing defensive pairs are among the strongest in the league and their role players all play to their roles annoyingly well.

While I’d take Tkachuk, Barkov and Verhaeghe over Eichel, Stone and Marchessault - I’d say the overall difference is slim to negligible even if the Florida trio has more of the buzz heading into this series. I think it’s easy to forget what a monster a healthy Stone is too.

Forsling and Montour have been so good all year and with Ekblad, even diminished makes a solid trio for the Panthers on the blueline - there is a monumental advantage for the Knights defensively being able to roll out Pietrangelo and Theodore.

So add in depth and I’d agree with those who say this series is really going to rest on Bob being able to maintain his form. It’s reasonable to chalk up some rust in game one for Florida but I think they are clearly the underdogs here. The Knights have the stronger roster by a clear measure for me.

My thoughts. . .

Florida looked a bit off and didn’t have as much puck luck as Vegas. That said, they still rang 2-3 posts and could have won if D-line played better.

Big credit to both Bob and Hill - both goalies looked sharp after layoff.

Vegas was quite dominating at times; you could just feel a goal coming during these stretches. Florida better watch some film and respond or Vegas wins.

I know ragging on officiating is standard practice on HF, but last night was simply horrendous. When bad reffing affects the outcome of a game, I stop watching. Last night was not THAT bad but pretty close.

Looking forward to game 2

Didnt see the game, but how the f*** wasnt Stones goal highstick? Seriously, what the hell.. his stick is over his head lol
They say the “shoulder height” is determined as if player was standing straight up. Stone was leaning over reaching for puck, so I guess they could determine where puck would’ve been if he was standing straight up. Idk, FL had like 10 chances to get it out of the zone before Stone smacked the final failed attempt down and buried it. It’s all on them, imo

Similar result to Bob’s first game against Boston, goal-wise anyway. If the post would get tf outta the way we’d have had a few more. Good game, the guys weren’t super sharp, I expect obvious adjustments to be made.

Vegas is a really good team, don’t think they’ve had as much forecheck pressure as we bring for a whole series though. Felt like both teams were flexing all game.

Tkachuk is part of a new breed of "physical players," pu**ies from wealthy suburban families, coddled every day of life and taught they can cheat any way they want due to their daddy's name. The sucker punch last night was prototypical Tkachuk.
I really didn’t care who wins this series going in, leaned toward supporting Cassidy…but last night’s thuggery makes it impossible to cheer for FL

Video has to be conclusive to over turn the goal. Which I'm sure you know. And if Stone had been standing up straight his stick would have been above the goal bar.

But Stone was leaning to his right. Don't think the refs nor the league, watching the video in Toronto, could over turn.
