Well if you’re counting the Rangers at 52 points like everyone seems to then yeah. Certainly the first group though - I dont consider the Penguins in the mix but I didn’t really see the Islanders getting hot either.

General, overall point is that the Bruins are playing right with the others in the Mid Morass results wise.

Those games in hand are such a problem that you need these teams to lose more than they win. As much as they are close to a playoff spot they are in a tighter spot than a lot realize

I've been on it for some time now that GD. Games in hand for other teams is not good, but that goal differential continues to be the most disturbing number. Has been all season. It's been just about the only consistent characteristic of the 24/25 Bruins.

I just don't think I can recall a team with a -26 GD even smelling the playoffs once the season is said and done.

I wonder how many of these bubble teams are going to buy in an attempt to get over the hump and get their young talent some experience in the playoffs.
Just a completely different situation compared to the Bruins who expected to be a Cup contender this year.

Has a lot to do with the increase in empty net goals now that teams pull the goalie so early and even when down 2 or 3 goals.

Agreed, that definitely is a factor that augments an already bad stat.

Of course if you are habitually down 2 to 3 goals then you're not a great team.

I think I've hurt my brain. I don't need coffee anymore, as I just pop over to any stats site and see the Bruins dive bombing their goal differential and I'm ready to yell at snowplows.

2 totally situations, the Habs got so putrid they simply had to go full rebuild, B`s didn`t so we have or are watching a retool, not going great and not saying it was/is the right approach but..

I wouldn't go that far, but I'm thinking their one more @$$ whipping away, like the Sabres and Jets gave them, from sending out notices to all Playoff minded teams “Give us your best Brad Marchand offer".

In the salary cap era it absolutely is. Pre salary cap/southern expansion, it was a relatively regular occurrence given essentially 75% of the league made the playoffs.

That's not even an exhaustive list either, that's just the worst of the worst.

Some other notable examples:

1990-91 Canucks: -72
1990-91 Whalers: -38
1991-92 North Stars: -32 (somehow made it to the cup final)
1994-95 Sharks: -32

IIRC Washington's -37 is the worst to qualify since the 2012 Panthers, who not only got in, but won the burning trash heap known as the Southeast division with a laughably bad -27 differential

Thanks for the reminder. I'd forgotten that in the old days 16 out of 21 teams made it in. As you show, that allowed for some pretty putrid teams to crawl over the line.

Add to the notices, Frederic, Geekie, Brazeau, Koepke, Wotherspoon...all UFA and RFA

.400 pts. percentage since New Year's Eve. That is who they really are.

Yes and they need to be at least 17-8-3 for the rest of this season to get 95pts...will not happen!
