Here are my thoughts on the deadline (for today anyway). Our current roster is 23. Our final roster should be 23 or even 24. That will give us the numbers to overcome injury which is inevitable.

We don't need a lot of pieces, but each piece added needs to be an impact player. I am thinking the over/under is 2 pieces added (a F and a D). That would mean 1 or 2 from the current roster moved out. If it's 2, maybe the second player moved out would be an OA to make room for an OA coming back.

I think that our young players are all exciting and will all be worth more down the road than their current valuations would return. Moving picks instead of players where possible should be the plan for management. Even if we empty our cupboard more than in the past, I think keeping our young players should put us in position to have a quick rebuild.
Great post.

If we could get away with only trading brown we could potentially be back to competing in a couple of years

There’s no logical way we will.. just not happening, it’s a nice wish to want to have but to compete with teams throwing in their 07s we will need to move bodies too.

We can move bodies and still be okay for a run in another 2 years ( one “rebuild” year ).

I say no to both scenarios. That's nearly as much as Peterborough gave up for two years of Owen Beck.

Logan Morrison went for that pick package without a player.

Look at last year's Shane Wright deal, where they gave up a very comparable player to Virgilio (Miedema), along with one second and one third.

Maybe prices are much higher this year. I don't know, but we should reconsider our strategy if you are correct.

The picks for Wright were actually 2,3,4,4,6 & two more conditional picks which may turn out to be significant since the D given up did not report.

The suggested return for Beck is about right, I think.

Then maybe we don't go for Beck? There may be other players that fit our needs that we wouldn't have to sell as much for?
Opinions on if Hayes or ludwinski would cost less?

Wakely?

I like Lavoie from Niagara too.

I’ve heard that North Bay has no interest in selling

I was also told that Flints starting point on Hayes would be Brady Martin ( as any opposing should be asking for to start lol ). Just no reason for SSM to move Martin. For me he’s the only player we can’t move, under any circumstances.

I like Ludwinski haha.

If there’s one thing we all can agree on is the Soo can go a few different routes and ultimately come out better.. I don’t think there are many teams as deep as the Soo this year and I will stand by that. If it’s not Beck, there are many other players we can fill positional needs and still be elite.. like you mentioned.

No way in hell I'd trade Martin either haha. Not a chance.

I like ludwinski and really think Lavoie would score an absolute ton on this team. I like our oa's but think we may need an oa d to shore up the d.

I think punnett would look good in the red and white.

I love our imports, but sigh

Julian Lutz, LW: Lutz enters the tournament as Germany’s top-ranked forward. The Arizona Coyotes selected him in the second round, 43rd overall, in the 2022 NHL Draft. A move to USHL Green Bay has paid dividends as Lutz is off to a 10-goal, 23-point start through his first 19 games. At six-foot-three, he has the ability to play a power game working through checks and winning board battles. Lutz can make plays and has the patience, poise and puck-protecting abilities to produce points.

If the Soo acquires a forward, they might end up on the second line. But that doesn't mean we are looking for a mid 6 player. We should be looking for a legit top 6 player.

Trade talks are certainly happening right now and we've got some of the best trade bait available, so stay tuned.

Hopefully Saginaw follows the advice in the article. They have more needs than we do, but I expect that they will be filled in a big way.

Maybe they should have someone with at least a tad of knowledge of the league write the article.
I'll give my take for the West:

Kitchener: Top 4 defenseman. It's a solid top 3, led by a nice complimentary pair in Andonovski and Brzustewicz, along with always steady Simon Motew. I think the losses of Hamara and Schmidt will be exposed as the season progresses, as Reid and Campbell don't seem ready to take top 4 roles.

Target: Spencer Sova

Soo: Top 6 scoring. Scoring depth from the youngsters has been good, but they are playing too many top 6 minutes, especially with the captain's status in question. D'Intino has proven that he can't be relied on to stay healthy.

Target: Oliver Peer

London: Forward depth: Their top 7 forwards are the best in the league in my opinion. Then you get to the rest, who have a total of just 15 goals. They need an older and better bottom 6 in the playoffs.

Target: Jonathan Melee

Saginaw: Team defense. Despite a dynamic offense, the team is average 5-5, mostly because they are poor defensively. Hache and Forgione are stout defenders, but the remaining defensemen are very poor. Loukus should be sent out for an upgrade.

Target: Connor Punnett
