Saginaw getting cup was best case. maybe now we can focus on selling and doing a proper rebuild. re-learn how to draft and be in contention next time it's here
I think we'll see come trade deadline where the team sits...selling BMB and KK for a good return and building the team around whoever we draft this year would be beneficial though

you have to figure our weak roster played into the decision. congrats to saggy. i hope they put on a world class event!

personally i'd rather come barging through the front door with an elite team than limping in the back door as a host.

Saginaw made the best moves. They kept a solid core with promising young guys and traded their top end talent for tons on draft picks for next year. Congrats Saginaw as well as our 2 soo boys on the team.

If only we had done that in 2019 or 2022. Suddenly expecting Raftis to change his ways is pretty optimistic but let's keep our fingers crossed!

Asked if he was given an indication on what the difference was, Lukenda said that he was given an outline of the criteria “and they indicated that one of the factors was the perspective strength of team next season.”

There it is. Lukenda and Raftis have nobody to blame but themselves. I hope those easy 2nd round outs were worth it LoL

Trading Kerins and O'Rourke for a few 17 year olds and picks was necessary to make this bid realistic. EPIC FAIL!

I'm pissed!

Wow. I've been preaching that since the bid. And realistically Saginaw is the only team that meets that criteria

we can't even tank right! LOL! just kidding.

a 3rd overall pick is great and should fetch a fine player. let's hope we build around him and end this cycle of mediocrity.

pretending we don't need to rebuild has cost us 5 seasons and a mem cup hosting bid. enough's enough.

Mere historical footnote but we took Wayne 3rd OA in ‘77. Here’s hoping…!

Niagara was also in the Top 3 that year and took Steve Peters. Tom McCarthy went 1st to Oshawa.

Anyone have a gut feeling?

Roorbroeck to Erie for certain.

Among Moore, Griffin, Martin (forwards)
And Schaefer on D.

If Moore is going stateside, I’m thinking it’s Martin or Griffin to the Hounds, and they do need scoring, but Schaefer is so good.

Whittling it down, probably between Martin and Griffin.

This before the league re-named the OHL Draft to the OHL Priority Selection...for a reason.

Do you know why he didn’t go 1st?
Tom McCarthy was excellent. He was a big, slick, scoring C. About 6’2, 190.

Peters had an underage season under his belt with Peterborough but I believe the system of protected midgets (Peters was from Peterborough) had come to an end and he had to go into the draft.

Each team in the early 70s could protect up to eight locals. It’s one prime reason why Toronto was a perennial power at the time.

Wayne was 5’11, 155. At practices in Sept ‘77, looked 145.

Your question is a good one.

Was it a straight-up miscalculation in projecting Wayne’s future, or, some concern he wouldn’t be around the then OHA for long?

The WHA was inviting 18-year-olds to sign contracts. Several did.

John Tonelli, for example, put up 49-86-135 for Toronto in 1974-75. He never played a game in the playoffs that year as he intended to go pro. There was a massive legal snarl involving Houston Aeros, the WHA, the OHA and the Marlies.

Tonelli sat out while the legalities of his turning 18, wanting to sign with Houston, but contractually obligated to Toronto, was sorted out.

Toronto went on to win the Memorial Cup without him. Tonelli went on to win Stanley Cups later with the Islanders.

Anyway, with the junior-pro relationship structure suffering huge cracks, it’s possible both Oshawa and Niagara saw a risk and passed.

The Sault took a risk as well. It took a concerted effort by Hounds’ management doing some serious red carpeting and salesmanship to get Wayne up here.

Thankfully, it all worked out and we got one beautiful/incredible season of Gretzky.

I'm pretty gutted too. I understand the hesitancy to sell under normal circumstances, but when you're making a pitch to host the Cup, there's no excuse.

We will see if they learn their lesson.
the very next line in the article...

“But aside from that, which obviously I disagree with, that was one of the factors that came into play,” Lukenda added.

Unforunately that does not sound like a man who has gained any kind of insight or self awareness as to how the franchise shot itself in the foot. In fact it sounds like something Fischhaber would say. ;)

I hope they learn from their mistakes and make a push for the hosting rights in 3 years again... the arena is not getting newer, not that its old but with the investment in technology and some improvements in the downtown core it was the right time for the infrastructure around the team but not the roster. I have not followed the team closely enough last few years to know what they should do next year but going forward they should focus on getting talent and assets towards a future bid. You have 3 years to figure out if anyone you select now is part of a championship level team including your scouts, management and coaching staff. Long overdue for some success of some level in the Soo.

Bottom line - if it was given to either Kingston, Niagara or the Soo, it would have been the first time a non-playoff market one year would get to host the very next.

Saginaw was a lock around January 10th.

imo the worst thing you can do is have a host team like windsor in 2017. 3 other teams battle their way there for 2 months.. guys are tired, guys are hurt etc...

windsor finishes 5th in the western conference, loses in the first round of the playoffs, and gets to ice a healthy well rested team against the teams that actually earned their way there.

i'm certain windsor fans don't think there's an asterisk, but there is.
