my concern is:

is Zibby worth more than Trouba at $8 million? I would say yes
So it’s safe to assume Fox’s Norris trophy is worth more than Trouba too. Yes

Flash forward two years - rank the forwards - Laf, Kakko, Krav, Panarin or Zibby. Unless Zibby is #2 the other or others will get paid more. Not to mention the rest of the kids have to get paid too.

I agree. Zibbys new contract is going to be factored in to what he’s done here already, and what he will do for the next 4-5 years. The rest of the years and money will be considered a cost of doing business thing. A write off so to speak.
It’s just how the contracts work in this league.
Now I’m sure down the line, trades will be made, the cap will go up, some players will be bridged that should be signed long term, etc it’s just how the league works. Guys get good and want to get paid.
The really good teams are always up against the cap no matter what. But they get creative and when they need to move someone, it gets done.
Look at Tampa. Even after the heavy losses this offseason, they are still a cup favorite. They pay who they need to pay, draft what they need, and move who needs to move.
Cap hell will be on this team soon enough, but we should have enough contracts that are staggered enough in years to accommodate all the important pieces. Like it or not, we’re not keeping everyone. We will also draft more talent, and the cap will go up. Wheels keep turning. Drury just has to be smart about the returns, because I have no doubt we are going to be trading so guys that have a lot of talent, and wind up being good players in this league for a long time.

I wonder if the Rangers go back to Buffalo once they agree on a deal with Mika. Or, at least, once they are getting close.
Gorton had a solid offer for him. I can’t see drury just abandoning a the notion of an Eichel trade. A lot of things have gone down that have affected value and everything else, but to my mind I bet we still have an interest barring the cost and what’s going on with our internal situation

Can someone clarify the current cap hit? We have 9M in space but 5 will apply towards bonuses?

Still thinks Fox takes a major hometown discount imo. He will come in under Makar.

Saw Stat-boy Steven’s show the other day were he claimed we have 3.1 million of excess bonuses applied to the cap at the start of the season which could then decelerate as the year progresses.

If Fox was to take a major discount with us, I would imagine it would happen when he's a UFA at age 31 and we've paid him handsomely for the previous eight years.

It'd be nice if he was a career Ranger, you'd be looking at jersey retirement territory potentially.

In my opinion, Makar took a discount. I’d consider something like 9.25m x 8 a great deal for us. Hoping we stay under 9.5m.

I’m in the minority I’m sure but I’d do five years for Fox at a lower AAV. Walks him right to UFA but in 5 years from next season the cap will be back to normal. We’ll pay more later but we can survive easier on those 5 years with him at a lower cap hit.

Everyone always talks about players taking discounts to play here, in my memory of this team Zuc is the only one i remember doing that, and then he got traded away when he wanted to get paid. Why does anyone think anyone will or should take a discount?

Because he's a die hard Ranger fan and only wants to play as a Ranger?

Panarin took a discount as well. Right around 10 million dollars on the table before tax.

Panarin took a discount technically. CBJ offered 14 million over 8 years for Panarin, Isles offered 12.5 mil x 7. Avs offered I believe 14 million for 4 years

It depends on who makes the team and what the total potential bonuses are.

New York Rangers Salary Cap, Draft Picks, and Player Contracts - CapFriendly - NHL Salary Caps

The bonus cushion is 7.5% of the cap ceiling. 7.5% of 81.5 mil is 6.1125 mil.

Take the total Potential Performance bonuses and subtract 6,112,500 from it. Then take the result and subtract that from our available cap space. That's our actual cap space.

Assuming Barron and Lundkvist make the team, which is not unrealistic, that bonus cushion would be 3.1m

Fox will be 24 when his next contract begins. Three years away from group III. The cap will be flat for 3-4 more seasons after this season. Fox signs a four or five year contract worth $9.5M which includes one or two group III years. Fox signs the 8 year contract max contract for eight figures until he is 36 or 37.
