I don't think anyone was overly upset (other than EdJovo) that we traded him. Most, like myself, were upset at the return. If we had somehow managed to trade Buch for Zegras, we'd all be doing backflips. We weren't getting that, obviously, but the reality should have been somewhere in the middle.
True, I think the discourse on here has been mostly fair after the initial surprise as to the poor return.

I'm more thinking about all of the writers out there and hockey twitter that have treated us trading Buch as if we traded Panarin or Lafreniere. Or as if we don't have a recent 1st OA and 2nd OA winger both ready for top 6 winger roles and prime ice time that Buch was getting. It's been referred to as the main example as to why the rebuild is now officially a failure which I think is crazy.

To be fair, Rangers Twitter has been madly in love with Buchnevich for years. I am not surprised by these reactions. Personally, I am fine with trading away Pavel Buchnevich but the return is underwhelming.

Of course we got rid of HFNYR's Pavel Buchnevich years ago for nothing. That was a better trade than this one.

Corey Pronman's top U23 players.

6-Alexis Lafrenière
20-Kaapo Kakko
48-Filip Chytil
50-Nils Lundkvist
67-Braden Schneider
72-Zac Jones
76-K'Andre Miller
110-Brennan Othmann(ahead of Alex Turcotte)
129-Vitali Kravtsov

194 players in total

Ranking the best under-23 NHL players: Does Cale Makar or Andrei Svechnikov top the list?

He's too low on most of ours, but he's always been low on Lundkvist and he has to bump Kakko and Lafreniere down due to their lack of offensive numbers so far. Kravtsov is down due to his misadventures in the AHL and KHL.

I expect these guys to rise. Lafreniere should jump to at least the top of his "Bubble Elite/All Star" tier with Pettersson, or, he should jump into the elite tier with Svechnikov.

Kakko should rise from "Bubble All Star/Top of Lineup," to "All Star," solidly, right around Stutzle, Tkachuk, Hughes and Zegras.

Lundkvist gonna skyrocket to somewhere between Drysdale/Seider at 16/17 and Luke Hughes at 26.

Kravtsov gonna rise into the 100s at least.

I find this interest for a list of targets of centers we should be chasing, though. Let's set the cut off at Byfield at 18 (Byfield at 18, by the way, woof, that's not good for the Kings), and omitting players drafted or acquired by new teams this year:

22. Josh Norris
37. Anton Lundell
39. Cole Perfetti
40. Connor McMichael

^ these guys are low end 1Cs or high end 2Cs.

Next tier, middle 6 centers:

42. Robert Thomas
43. Casey Mittelstadt
51. Barrett Hayton
58. Shane Pinto
66. Peyton Krebs
69. Dawson Mercer
71. Morgan Frost
75. Marco Rossi
87. Gabe Vilardi
88. Alex Newhook
90. Dylan Holloway
100. Ty Dellandrea

Go get 'em

Interesting how far Turcotte (113) and Zary (117) have fallen.

Was discussed in passing. For Hajek? Love his size and worth a shot

For all the talk about not taking a goalie high in a draft -- what is the hit rate on centers 6'5 or bigger in the first round? Must be the worst possible pick that can be made looking at the data.

Those Pornman rankings are just an aggregate of his team U23 rankings from the other day. If you thought he was out to lunch with those, he's definitely going to be out to lunch when he tries to make one big list of them.

people don’t want to hear it but moving buch as I said all along was less about not liking buch and more about having to get ice time for your top picks. Kakko will thrive with more ice as will lafreniere these guys need to be go to guys. They have been their whole lives

This is true but getting a young center or assets to get a young center still would have been nice in that Buch deal.

Exactly. And if we kept Buch everyone crying about losing him would be crying that Kakko and/or Lafreniere are relegated to the 3rd line and not getting PP time.

I love Buch but look at the roster. I understand thinking the value in the return was poor, but the concept of moving on from Buch made total sense. If one of our 1st or 2nd overall picks (and previous year's 9th overall) were centers instead of wingers and if our best player wasn't a Hart trophy level winger, keeping Buch may have made sense.

Did the Buch deal kill @True Blue ??

this isnt directed at anyone in particular, but it is funny how people complain about the idea of acquiring a legit nhl center like dvorak and dont want to hear about him but logan brown has been brought up on this board for years as some sort of potential center option for this team even though he hasnt been able to break through on the ottawa freaking senators....

Yea but it's all about opportunity cost. Getting Brown for scraps on a minimum contract is better than giving up a first and second for a known third line center on a $4.5m a year contract.

Zegras, Cozens, Caufield and Seider combined for 75 reg season games so far.

Dach missed an entire season due to injury.

This is a typical Pronman take so I shouldn't be surprised.
He also has Owen Power above most of those guys, who won’t play an NHL game until the fall of 2022.

I would definitely entertain trading Miller because his stock seems to be higher than his projection at this point.
Whose projection, though? Pornman? Pornman has always been bearish on Miller. I think most people recognize what he did last year at his age with his skill set and basically see the sky as the limit. Of course not everyone feels that way, but when I read people (professional journos or otherwise) discuss Miller, he seems to be very highly regarded. I've always had him as a guy with legitimate first-pairing potential and definitely still do.

I don't think I'd trade him for picks, as picks can bust and Miller has already shown that he "hit" to some degree. If I'm trading him I need to be getting back a comparable forward prospect, preferably at center. If that deal is out there I'd at least consider it, but I don't know what team would be looking to make that move.

idk, not too many at this size.

Agreed; not trading him for less certainty than himself.

It would have to be a pick during a draft when the prospect we were chasing was someone we felt even better about, or, as part of a package for a star. Something like that. But I'm suggesting Miller may carry more value to get a higher end current NHL player than packaging Schneider, Robertson, or Jones.

Makes you think.

I disagree. He was incredible to start the season last year, far better than I think it’s reasonable to expect any of the other kids to be. We need to see if he can play at that level consistently given better coaching and a season of experience with an NHL schedule.
