Kinkaid’s numbers last season were comparable to Georgiev’s. He has more experience, maturity, none of the locker room issues, and costs a lot less.

I’m fine with him as backup.
Kinkaid sucks ass, if we have any intention of winning this year we better pray he doesn't see any significant time with the big club.

His numbers being comparable to Georgiev's last year is just an indictment on how bad Georgie was last year, not evidence that we would be okay with Kinkaid as backup. He stinks. We need our backup to be more reliable than a below average backup on a bad team. He's fine as the depth in the AHL in case of injury, but going into the season with him as the backup on the NHL club is not something a team with playoff aspirations should be doing, not unless they want to play Shesterkin 70 starts this season.

I know that some of the young players have some potential performance bonuses they can hit, but I would be lying if I said I wasn't at least a little disappointed to see the Rangers not utilize their $8m+ in cap space as a weapon to secure more draft capital. Be that something like Georgiev for Koskinen + or something else, I would have hoped Drury would find a way to utilize that better.

The performance bonus cushion is 3.7m, giving them 5.1m in cap space with 14F, 8D and 2G. Assuming they will send down 1F and 1D, they will have ~6.7m in cap space with the performance bonus cushion accounted for.

There's definitely room for a trade where salary comes out way, as long as it's short term.

I think not spending to the cap and leaving a chunk of that open could be very good for us if we're in one of those wild card spots approaching the deadline. We can find some good depth if nec. For example, I could see Yanne Gourde being a hot commodity at the deadline this year. Yes, he's signed for 3 more years after this and has a NTC but he's with SEA and I bet he'd be willing to waive for a chance at being on another contender. He's the kind of player I'd target for a playoff run and beyond. He's got a 5.1m AAV and he may not be a fit beyond a year or two salary wise. But if we're moving on from Strome, I wouldn't be averse to going with Zib, Chytil, Gourde, Barron for a bit.

This is true, however if the team went into the season with ~$2m cap space to start, they would be able to pretty much trade for anyone because they are only adding the pro-rated contract at the deadline.

Larkin makes $6.1, just sayin.

Lol. Shit storm incoming.

I think they wait till the deadline to make this decision. The division and the east is deep, theres no guarantee they are a lock for a playoff spot. New coach, new added grit, bigger roles for younger players. I think you need to see how these things go first before changing up or adding to the roster.

Agreed. I believe the logical plan would be to give Chytil every chance to win the 2c spot and cover that bet with Strome on the 2rw. As a side bet, experiment with Kravtsov at 3c with Goodrow as his 3rw cover. This gives the kids a chance to show if they got what it takes without changing up the lines any more than swaping positions and responsibilities. If it works, great, no need for Larkin. If it doesn't, then Strome/Goodrow move back to center.

If Chytil can't make the upgrade, then I think Larkin gets a serious look around the TDL and Strome's money is allocated to him next season and either Chytil goes back to 3c or one of him or Kravtsov would be part of the Larkin deal.

The Rangers have cap space this season. This is my spreadsheet. The last column are the performance bonuses. The Rangers have more than the 7.5% bonus cushion. $8.4M in bonuses. $6,112,500 is the cushion. The difference will be on the cap until those bonuses are not reachable. The roster is 13 forwards, 7 D and 2 goalkeepers. Add the buyout money. The Rangers have $10.3M in space. Add the remaining performance bonus money. The Rangers have $8,033,531 at the start of the season with this roster. Chris Drury has money to add a player(s) for this season and still leave the Rangers with flexibility to run the team. Leave space for performance bonuses.

The Rangers could have paid Pavel Buchnevich for one season. Their options would have been to keep him for one season and self rent him or keep him and trade him at the deadline. Keeping long term was impossible. The Rangers brass also wanted to open up opportunities for the other younger wingers. Do the Rangers keep Pavel and he takes away ice time from the other players knowing they have no chance of satisfying his asking price in a long term contract? Trade Pavel and give the other players more opportunities?

Those empty spaces for 22-23 next to M Zibanejad and A Fox will be filled. Those numbers will take out a big chunk of the $30.4M in space. The Rangers can add money this season. If the Rangers add money beyond this season, they need to factor that money into the 22-23 cap which will be very tight. Kakko and Kravtsov will be a group II free agents without arbitration rights. Blais has arb rights.

@RangerBoy

I dont think Buch would have settled on a 1yr deal. He got what he was looking for from the Blues and IMO, NYR didn't want another Zuccarello situation.

Buch wasn't too upset it seemed, at leaving either. I think player and team got what they wanted out of it even if the compensation was a little shy of optimal.

Didn't seem too upset? There were reports teammates were extremely upset, Buch was clicking like on all these posts saying not to trade him, his profile picture is still himself wearing Rangers gear (even though he's very active on IG) and he's still wearing Rangers clothing & gear around. He looked miserable in his interview with the Blues, looked miserable in general at that tournament he played with Panarin, and he's still hanging out with Panarin and Shesterkin during the summer.

Sounds like he can’t handle adversity. It’s a business. Grow up. We’re supposed to expect him to be able to handle Gallant’s demanding system when he’s crying about not being able to hang out with his friends during the week?

I’m happy we traded him for a rugged Canadian player with a Cup-winning pedigree like Sammy Blais.

Buch is gone let’s move on.

I don’t see how Barron makes this team unless 1 of 2 things happen;

1) Goodrow plays on the 4th line, getting only 6-10 minutes per night which would be a mistake and a waste of money spent.

2) The Rangers FO is ok with Barron playing 6-10 minutes per night, which would be dumb for his development. Because the reality is, at is stands today, he is not better or more suitable than the 9 players ahead of him for the Top 9. He is not better than Zib-Panarin-Laf-Kakko-Strome-Kravtsov-Kreider-Chytil-Goodrow. The Rangers told you what they thought of Kravtsov by not having him participate in the Prospect Development Camp and Games.

Barron should be in Hartford getting 17-20 minutes per night on the 1st Line as the #1 Center continuing to work at nailing down the nuances of the position. That is what is best for him and the Organization for THIS YEARS team. Maybe things change halfway through the season. Maybe we trade Strome, bump Chytil up and there’s your 3C spot if Barron shows he has earned it / ready for it.

I know some won’t like this but it is the reality. And its ok reality.

Sounds like he needs to learn this is a business.
