Not even talking about acquiring... I'm talking about selling high on Strome.

Having a #2C (Strome) AND a #3C (Chytil) who can't play the PK is outrageous (imo). Having one dimensional talent down in the middle of your middle 6 is just asking for trouble.

Who is replacing Strome in the line up then?

How on earth do we keep Strome here past this season with a flat cap and guys like Zibanejad + Fox needing new contracts? Unless Drury can move Kreider, I don’t see how it’s possible.

I'm not talking about keeping Strome past this season. But I don't see a scenario where we acquire someone to replace his minutes this season.

And no, Hertl isn't better than Strome. That's a lateral move. And Hertl is UFA in 2022 like Strome so it doesn't solve that issue either.

Strome does kill penalties. And Chytil should, this year.

A lot can happen between now and the end of the season. Say Mika takes a bad hit three games into the season and is out indefinitely with a concussion.

And since Strome's trade value isn't super high, there isn't much of an opportunity cost to self renting him this season. We're far more likely to make the playoffs with Strome than without him.

I don’t disagree at all. And I’d hate to see us move assets for a pending UFA with brittle knees. I like Hertl but he won’t come cheap, nor will he sign for cheap.

I questioned how we keep him past this season. I don’t see us moving him this year unless we’re completely out of a playoff spot.

Hertl is absolutely better than Strome. I don't necessarily see it being worth what Shark fans want to see as the return, but I take Hertl over Strome all day, every day, twice on Sundays. Better at 5v5 while playing with much less support.

Analytics-wise, Hertl wins out in (per NaturalStatTrick, bear in mind this is a long list): CF, CA, CF%, FF, FA, FF%, SF, SA, SF%, GA, GF%, xGF, xGA, xGF%, HDCF, HDCA, HDCF%, HDGF, HDGF%,
Strome wins in: GF, HDGA, On-Ice Sh%, On-Ice Sv%, PDO

EDIT: And fwiw, i think Strome's wins in On-Ice Sh% & Sv% (and therefore PDO) are skewed by Panarin & Martin Jones respectively

Just keep him and let him walk as a FA. There's no selling high on him. We've heard about them trying to deal him for over a year now and no deal has been made. Clearly teams don't value him much. I'd rather have him on the team this season than just trade him for a 2nd round pick.

Wait. What? Hertl and Strome aren't even in the same ballpark. Hertl is a legit lower tier 1C. Strome is a guy who can produce only if in the right situation. Hertl also brings an all around game. Strome is one dimensional. What a weird take.

I never suggested we should trade him this year lol.

Hertl coming off 3rd significant leg injury, entering 2nd half of career, concerns me.
Not that he wouldn't produce analogous/better re Strome, when healthy.
But paying too high a price could turn out poorly

If Hertl was healthy, then sure...

Yes, I would not trade for Hertl or want to extend him long term. But he is multiple classes above Strome.

Is he not currently healthy? He played 50 of 56 games last season

This is HF. You have a major injury once or twice and it's held above your head forever. We hear about Mika's concussions all the time even though the last one he was reported to have was four years ago. Hertl just had the best year of his career.

We need to chill about this. Mika-Strome-Chytil-Rooney-Barron is more than fine for right now. If you think this is bad, Guerin is on year 3 of being the Wild’s GM and the Wild’s centers last year were Victor Rask at 1C, Ryan Hartman at 2C (who’s a winger), and Joel Eriksson Ek at 3C. Eriksson Ek has shown he can’t play top 6 and doesn’t mesh with anyone there yet Guerin gave him a 5 million dollar, 8 year extension. I like the player but that’s rough for someone who can’t play with your top stars and will only just be an elite 3C. And Guerin still hasn’t acquired a center, so they’re going with Rask-Hartman-JEE again and hoping that Marco Rossi, a player who’s more likely to end up a winger and just missed an entire developmental season due to Covid, will take a top 6 spot. The only thing we should be doing right now is re-signing Mika. 2C doesn’t really matter as Panarin is basically the center on his line. Hawks won a cup with a washed up Handzus at 2C because Patrick Kane was basically the center on his line as well. Toews played with two elite wingers just like Mika will. The Hawks never had an elite 2C and had a revolving cast of washed up players at that spot they won cups with because of Kane on that line.
Yep. It’s fans who want every roster spot filled with a long term solution. It’s impossible. We have some holes but it’s not a bad lineup at all. And we just need to live with some flux and uncertainly.
And actually we have more long term solutions already than I’ve ever seen this team have.

I really hope Chytil takes that next step. I'm not convinced yet.
.5 PPG as a 21 year old center playing no PP or top 6 time is pretty notable. Not to mention he had a rookie and sophomore on his wings most of the season and that line had 0 chemistry. I don’t think he breaks out next season due to circumstance, but he’d be putting up much better numbers on a team with better opportunity and veteran linemates
