I think signing Mika is a necessary evil at this point but the Rangers got burned on the Kreider deal thinking the cap was going to be raised to 100 million so let’s not use that as an excuse for handing out another crappy deal

I get that there are a bunch of us who would watch if offered.

I don't get the extreme entitlement of fans demanding they get what they want,
and the bitter condemnation, and discrediting of organizations, which make their own business decisions, for not satisfying them.

It just strikes me as Cookie Monster demanding more cookies.
Sports fans have never had more up-to-date detailed content.
Making a big deal of not getting more just seems spoiled.
It's a couple of meaningless, early-camp, inter-squad rookie scrimmages.

We'll agree to disagree here.

If you give Mika the benefit of the doubt for the first half of last season being covid related (plus just an overall weird schedule and season) his 21 goals and 39 points in the final 29 games of the season is a 59 goal, 110 point pace. His previous season was also a 59 goal 108 point pace.

Even with the 3 goals and 11 points in his first 27 games last year, he paced for 35 goals and 73 points.

His last two seasons combine to 45 goal, 91 point paces even with the terrible start.

Chris Kreider's career high is 28 goals and 53 points. Last year he paced for 32 goals and 49 points. He's broken 50 points twice.

Mika is averaging 88 points per 82 games over the past 3 years. He's 2 years younger and he's at least effective as a two-way center and penalty killer. There were times he has looked like a very good two-way player. He's a career 49.3% in the dot. He was above 50% until last year.

If Mika wasn't a Ranger, we'd be talking about signing him if he made it to UFA this summer. I understand we want to manage our cap, but Mika Zibanejad has blossomed into an elite #1 offensive force since coming to NY. Under no circumstances should we be letting him walk. I get age comes into the equation, but even healthy, I'm not sure Jack Eichel was ever going to pace for 59 goals and 110 points. We take what we have for granted.

We really have gotten so spoiled. In the past like... 20 years, we had Brad Richards put up a 66 point season. I don't think Drury, Gomez, Brassard or Stepan ever broke 60 points here (edit: forgot Gomez's first season he had 70). We acquired Drury and Richards at 31 years old.

Mika put up a 74 point season, followed it up with 75 in 56 games, had 50 in 56 last year, is averaging 88 points per 82 games over the past three seasons and, outside of his possible-Covid suckage for 27 games last year, has been playing at a 50+ goal, 100+ point pace the past two seasons. We have the opportunity to extend him at age 28 and we're unsure about it.

Panarin, Fox and picking #1 and 2 has messed with our heads. Zibanejad is the center we've waited for pretty much since 2000. An 8 year deal - as with most - will likely be rough in the final 3 seasons, but I'll worry about that 5 years from now. And I get that we have kids who need to be re-signed, but I would absolutely coerce Trouba and Kreider into waiving their clauses and do everything possible to move them, or buy them out, before I would let Zibanejad go. We have the wing and D depth to absorb their losses. Zibanejad is the best center we've had since I was like 10 years old, and he's just hit his prime.

Won't help us an inch. Colorado gave Makar 9m/y. Fox alone will be in that ball park. We have Zibs, Krava and Kaapo to re-sign ...

Man those Trouba and Panarin contracts will be killing us.
It literally helps more than it not going up at all

It also indicates that it is not actually a completely flat cap for 4 years coming

Saying we have kravstov to re-sign this coming offseason is hilarious, like that will break the bank at all lol

What if he puts up 50 points? Nobody knows what he will do so the comment is a bit odd unless you can see the future. He was solid in his very limited time/role last season.

Zibanejad of 2016-19, agreed. The last two seasons were pretty poor on both sides of the puck0 at even strength, when evaluating the underlying play driving metrics. He has kept the points up due to extreme efficiency. There is no guarantee that future Zibanejad will perform like past Zibanejad.

Depends on the season he's about to have, but anything upwards of 30 pts and he might just break the bank. He'll certainly eat up that precious one million in cap space.
Break the bank? He's gonna get 2-3 per year.

Sounds like that extra 1 mil in cap space is being put to good use
