Kotkaniemi would be a dummy to agree to a long term deal low key with Carolina without playing out this year first
He’s smart for signing it although I’d be pissed as a MTL fan and wouldn’t want him back that he bought into the Canes trolling the Habs.

I get the Aho situation as he just wanted a contract so Aho signing didn’t hurt the Canes fanbase too much because their owners are cheap, but Kotka basically turned on his own team for money he won’t even likely see at his prime.

Kotka likely tops out as a decent middle 6 C. I don’t see 2C potential at all. Canes just signed him at 6 million dollars meaning his QO next season is also 6 million dollars. He’s making big money while he can, especially since there’s a reported extension in place with Kotkaniemi. Instead of making 2-3 million on his next contract then making 4-5 million on a long term deal after the bridge he’s already making 6 million dollars at 21 years old and has a guarantee to either be signed at 6 million again or hit FA where a team will surely overpay for a big, 21 year old former 3rd overall pick regardless of how good he is now and will be going forward.

If Eichel goes to Montreal Buffalo is getting back either Suzuki or Caufield, and probably two firsts. That's a decent haul me thinks.

But most likely not related to a trade anyway lol.

You’re right- they have to QO him at 6.1 (plus escalator). But they can QO him at 6.1 (plus the escalator) and then sign a longer deal at a lower hit.

If they don’t QO him, he goes to UFA. But he won’t get 6 million as a UFA. Maybe not even 5. Likely for less term. So it’s risky for Kotkaniemi to not work with Carolina.

But he got 6.1m when he cost a 1st and a 3rd, a very steep price. Why wouldn’t he get 6m in UFA?

I am not saying that he ‘should’ get it, but Carolina was de facto willing to go there.

And what kind of move is it for Carolina to ‘rent’ Kotkaniemi for 6m per for 1 year?

That’s the cost that Carolina paid to steal his RFA rights from Montreal. If Kotkaniemi goes to UFA, another team wouldn’t have to overpay. Given Kotkaniemi’s numbers thus far, I doubt any will. Bergevin wasn’t convinced he can handle 2C.

They aren’t ‘renting’ him. They wouldn’t do this if they didn’t expect to sign him long-term.
