im glad Carolina is doing *stuff*, i dont care what it is. we've seen what hockey being classy looks like and it turned the sport so inward and insular its not even considered a major sport in the US.

anything that gets any sort of engagement is good

If I’m Montreal, I take that 1st and 3rd I get from the offersheet and then flip it for Eichel, Eichel’s new agent Brisson is very close with Bergevin and that might be the only way for Montreal to come out on top. Even if they have to overpay a little for Eichel

Suzuki+Carolina 1st+Carolina 3rd (just to be petty like Waddell)+another solid piece

Basically paying Suzuki+Kotka for Eichel and I genuinely think Buffalo accepts this. They get a replacement young potential 1C with high character along with a 1st and solid prospect/pick

Montreal gets to retain their first and build around Eichel/Caufield

NHL is losing to MLS in the coming years.

Ya they are allowed to talk what his next contract looks like, they just can't formally sign it, he's currently an rfa afterall.

Yeah, they can talk, but official contract extension talks can't happen once he's under contract until Jan 1st (since it's a 1-year deal).

A lot can happen and handshake deals aren't binding.

Well, that's an inevitability. The most popular sport in the world up against a sport that's played at a high level in basically a dozen or fewer countries. Most Americans still think of hockey as "a Canadian thing" while there are 3 million American kids playing soccer, and people like me who grew up playing and recognize it for the global force that it is.

The only surprising thing about the rise of MLS and soccer in the US in general is that it has taken this long.

If Buffalo doesn’t want to send him to us they sure as shit aren’t sending him to a team that’s closer and plays in the same division.

They aren’t giving up a 1st and a 3rd for a player they wouldn’t QO. He’s getting locked up.

I really miss the early days of MLS. With the hockey-style shootout. That was f***ing epic!

Teams give up equivalent value to a 1st and a 3rd for rentals who they have zero intention of locking up every TDL.

They won't lock him up just because they OS'd him. Assuming Montreal doesn't match, if he sucks, they're not going to make a major financial commitment just because they have the player.

*c0uld be signed.

If Carolina can sign Kotkaniemi long-term for a lower AAV, this is a great move on their part. As long as they can avoid the QO, they should be fine.

Why is Kotkaniemi doing that, if the AAV is significantly lower, when he is guaranteed either 6.1M or UFA status?

This isn’t a TDL rental.

To the point of him waiting for a QO and hitting the market, I seriously doubt any team would pay Kotkaniemi significantly more than the ~5 million that would likely be the base that Carolina offers him over potentially 8 seasons.

By going UFA, Kotkaniemi gambles on 40 million? What if he only gets another 6x1 and doesn’t show development?

Exactly my point. If I'm Kotkaniemi, why would I sign a lower AAV deal when you can get 6.1 on a QO or test free agency at age 22....?
If his play warrants a small pay cut, but not cutting him loose, and he really likes it at Carolina, I could see Carolina offering him say 4 years at 4,75 million. And it's not a totally outrageous idea that Kotkaniemi would take that deal for job security, and getting to stay where he likes it.
