I rather have this than the boring Rangers. Man, they really are the most vanilla team in social media, to the point other teams make fun of them.

Social media should be fun. All these teams interact with each other, well... almost all of them.
Social media should be fun, yes.

When you're prepared to spend a $6.8m cap hit and lose multiple picks to start a twitter fight, it gets to be cringe.

I don't think a majority of fans really care that much. Social media--Twitter and Instagram in particular--is like 60-70% people 35 and under, yet 60-70% of people who call themselves avid fans of sports are 35+.

There's obviously a young demographic that's into this kind of silliness and I know it's more "fun" than being all stodgy like our franchise is, but in the end it doesn't matter for anything. I think if you polled the MSG crowd, the people who (generally speaking) pump the most money into this franchise, and most of them wouldn't care if the Rangers abandoned social media altogether.
As one of the young people who that kind of trolling would be aimed to appeal to, I honestly find it cringey. Among people my age it’s sort of a meme “Brand tweets ____” and people make fun of corporations for trying to appeal to the youth like they’re that “How do you do, fellow kids” meme.

I actually like the “boringness” of the Rangers organization. It gives them more of a prestige. My first time walking into MSG was like walking into a museum of hockey, there’s something special about this team and makes many others seem like tacky amateur organizations in comparison.

At the end of the day it's all harmless. But, I do feel like when the "extracurricular" stuff gets arguably more attention than the move itself, that's silly. Makes it feel more like a stunt than an actual hockey move (and if that's the case, that's dumb).

Anyway I've said more than I really care to about this, so. Moving on.

This is all true.

But dunking on the Habs is always welcome. Loved it when Kucherov did it, love this almost as much.

Sean Avery should be in charge of the NYR Twitter account

I mean, if Hank get a position in the front-office I recon Sean comes closer. :)

BTW does anyone know if Hank and Sean still co-owns a bar or a resturant or whatever it was?

I don’t want the Rangers to start trolling on social media. In a world that’s been lost to this “woke”(More like Rip Van Winkle)political correctness bullshit I don’t want to see the Rangers start shit on there and then have everyone offended and then it makes headlines. Stay classy and boring.

Honestly, I would have no problem with it. If the politicians are crazy it’s one thing and beyond unacceptable. But should a professional sports team in the entertainment industry be the last bastion for class?

Sean Avery wouldn’t score any own goals, just give opponents more fuel. He would have a feel for it. :)

Yes it’s cringey but it’s also just sports entertainment. I’m going to allow it.

I have zero problems with it, this is on them.

But it does exposes them a bit, can they handle it? Maybe that is what they need. More of a bulls eye on their back. Time will tell.

New 31 Thoughts podcast. Elliotte Friedman and Jeff Marek discussed the offer sheet and Eichel. Elliotte believes Montreal is thinking about not matching the offer sheet. He thinks Montreal shouldn't match the sheet. He also believes the Canes and the player have discussed what a long term contract would look like. It would be $6.1M this season but it would drop to like $5M AAV in a long term deal. That is legal.

Their Sportsnet colleague Eric Engels brought this potential trade up in an article.

With a first- and a third-round pick from Carolina giving the Canadiens 12 picks in the 2022 Draft, could Bergevin look to shed some of that capital to acquire Arizona Coyotes centre Christian Dvorak? It’s a deal he’d be wise to explore, with the Coyotes proving over the last month that they’re on a quest to collect as many high-end picks as possible and with Dvorak giving the Canadiens at least as much reliability down the middle as Kotkaniemi would’ve provided this coming season.

That Dvorak’s a 25-year-old, six-foot, 200-pound, two-way centre who’s produced half a point per game over his 300-plus in this league makes him a good fit. Having him for four more seasons at a very digestible $4.45-million cap hit is appealing, too.

Canadiens’ Bergevin must explore all options before matching Kotkaniemi offer

They discussed this potential trade on the podcast.

This would represent the type of value Armstrong would want for Dvorak.

There was a meeting between Eichel, his agent(Fish),the NHLPA and the NHL. August 18? They tried to find common ground on the resolution regarding surgery. Nothing changed. Both sides are dug in. The PA backed Eichel. The NHL backed the Sabres.

Elliotte said Eichel approved of everything his previous agents did. They did everything he wanted. He decided to change agents.

This information is in the second segment of the podcast. In the 1st segment, Elliotte said Buffalo is trying to win the Eichel trade.

Good luck to them. A trade is supposed to be a fair trade for both sides. Both sides give and take. Buffalo is under pressure to win the trade. Buffalo is not dropping their demands because Brisson is now Eichel's agent.

I didn't know the Rangers signed Geoff Courtnall and Stu Grimson to offer sheets back in the day. Learn something new every day.

The big one was in 1997, when Messier departed for the Nucks and NYR tendered an offer sheet to Joe Sakic that was matched.

Instead, we had to settle for Pat Lafontaine, who was unfortunately already pretty washed up at an early age.

If Montreal doesn’t match they would be pretty desperate for a C. Could see them going after Dvorak

maybe Strome if NYR can get Dvorak

The offer sheet also had a 14 million SB which the Rangers didn't think Colorado could financially match.

As for Pat LaFontaine, 62 point in 67 games wasn't washed up.

Damaged goods, no doubt, but not washed up.

And, while long term it would have been better to have gotten Sakic, for the year we had Patty, he posted almost identical numbers to Sakic.

62 points in 67 games to 63 points in 64 games.

Unfortunately we had Keane and he ended LaFontaine

he was useful no doubt, his body just couldn’t take the physical game anymore. Similar to Lindros in that category.

How does this Eichel saga end? Both sides dug in, Buffalo wants to pawn the surgery off to someone else but also wants to win the trade

Eichel needs to just be an asshole around the team when camp starts and this gets resolved much quicker. The public posturing is one thing over the summer, it’s different when the team comes together for camp and there’s a malcontent (and the captain no less) in the lockeroom around everyone else

Yup once he goes full PLD, they will cave & immediately regret not lowering their demands months ago.

I used to work around the corner from Warren 77. I think the last time I saw it it was shuttered.

I havent listened to Avery's podcast, but even his promos for it are a glimpse into his weird mindset. He's been on an anti-vax tear.

I like the Canes digging into the entertainment side of things. I also like that they offer sheeted a player. I'm with Freidman in believing that a) they want the player and b) they have a deal in place for a lower aav long term.

I just think its a really smart move for them. Kotkaniemi has been yanked around a lot in MTL, but his rookie year was fantastic as a teenager and he had some huge moments in the playoffs. I think he's still got significant upside and could be a perfect 2C behind Aho. What does he look like with Svech or Necas or Teravainen on his wings rather than byron? Carolina plays a much more aggressive game than MTL. I think that suits the player who transports the puck well, plays above the puck, and has the creativity and skill to make things happen out of broken plays.

I'm curious (and hoping) that this actually becomes more of a trend as the flat cap hinders teams while RFAs are getting progressively bigger deals all around. I dont want anyone to offer sheet us obviously, but so so many fantastic young players get stuck with an org that doesnt really have a plan for them. Eichel is going through that. As a fan im grateful that seguin left boston for dallas bc he really blossomed there.

I think back to one of my favorite trades where minnesota got Guillome Latendresse from MTL for Benoit Pouliot. Both players really thrived after the trade and it was fun to have two exciting players almost join the show after they looked like nonfactors before it

Agreed. Just like a celebration after a hot dog goal in a 5-0 blow out.

Act like you've been there before. Just skate away.

If Carolina can extend him it’s pretty shrewd but if they end up paying a first and a third for the ability to drastically overpay this guy for a year it’s pretty dumb

I have a hard time understanding why Kotkaniemi would take less on his next contract in Carolina?

Sounds a little backwards, he would take less to give up UFA years.

If I'm Kotkaniemi I either wait for my 6.1m QO, or I go the UFA route in 2022.

At age 22, Kotkaniemi as an unrestricted free agent can sign with the highest bidder.
