At worst, Carolina pays a first and a 3rd for one year of Kotkaniemi. Yes it's a deep draft, mut that first is most likely not going to be a lottery pick anyway.

It's not a huge risk or a loss for an epic troll job. Because no matter what Montreal does, they are screwed.

I love this so much. Also, count me in for a 1 year deal at $6.1m with the ability to sign him long term next offseason at a lesser number. I doubt he’s expecting to just keep getting 1 year deals.

What this also says is that Montreal was probably low-balling him.

All of the posts on their Twitter are hilarious. Can't stop smiling. After all the whining over the Kreider/Price non-incident, I love seeing Montreal choke on their own hubris.

God the social media stuff is so lame. I know I'm unhip and old-fashioned or whatever but I find all of that stuff dumb. Once in a while it's cute, but it's like Carolina's whole thing. They're the annoying dude at the party who still thinks it's funny to say "That's what she said!" after everything. Whatever, I know a lot of people eat it up. I'm just lame.

what would you consider lowballing a player with 28 points in his last 92 games? I would assume they were offering him something in the 2-2.5M range for a year or two

I don't get it from Carolina's perspective. And no petty revenge for Aho is not a good reason. It could be Dundon's influence but Carolina is the biggest try hard team in the league.

He's obviously a player they like and expect to improve. They can sign him to an extension on January 1st, something that is more in line with what he should be getting paid. Staal is 32 and has 2 years left, and Trochek is 28 with 1 year left.

Just dump Strome and someone else to open up the cap.

Like it's that easy.

Yeah, we could easily move Strome without taking back anything put pick(s). We can trade Kreider, it'd cost a lot and it better be to a team he wants to play on, I know.

But as far it's not to a team in the bottom, I think he'd waive to someone. Who wants to be on a team where you're not wanted. Hornqvist did this when Pens wanted to move him to Florida.

If you can’t smile at this- regardless how you feel about the transaction itself- you may actually be joyless. Not everything needs a cynical point of view. The social media angle is pure fun.

If Carolina can extend him it’s pretty shrewd but if they end up paying a first and a third for the ability to drastically overpay this guy for a year it’s pretty dumb
Kotkaniemi would be an RFA after a one year deal, yes? So unless he holds out they’ll extend him. He’s signing with them now, so I doubt he’d jump ship unless something horrible happened.

Kotkaniemi was a 3OA three drafts ago. A first and third next year is nothing compared to that, assuming Carolina doesn’t plan to be a lottery team.

Carolina is so cringe

They have to do shit like this to be relevant cause no one gives a f*** about them normally

I rather have this than the boring Rangers. Man, they really are the most vanilla team in social media, to the point other teams make fun of them.

Social media should be fun. All these teams interact with each other, well... almost all of them.

I'm sure this was pointed out already, but a 35+ contract is a contract signed when the player was 35 years or older on June 30th (the day before the contract kicks in).

Look at Lundqvist for instance: He was bought out after 35, but there was still cap relief because he signed the contract prior to turning 35, therefore it being an SPC.
Yea I’m not saying he’s going to sign a 35 plus contract. Was pointing out at the time of the presumable buyout period he would likely be 35plus years old

Kotkaniemi is not worth 6.1M this year. He likely won't be worth 6.1M next year. this is not a smart hockey decision. It also leaves them now exposed to further "retaliation" with Necas next year. And this is what I mean about retaliation not making sense. Congrats you had your fun trolling them and forcing them to make a decision and you also harmed your organization at the same time.
Odds are if they have Aho and KK signed long term, Necas could find himself as a possible trade candidate sooner rather then later.
The canes must have a lot of faith that KK is going to be an above average 2C relatively quickly by doing this offer sheet.
Because as you’ve said, they have certainly left themselves a little open now.

I'm rooting for a match so JK will have to face the Canadiens media and fans. I don't dislike him or want him to suffer or anything like that for signing a lucrative deal. It'll be great drama for the next year in which he's protected from trade.
