What’s kind of mind-boggling to me is that, from what they reported on PL Mornings today, the VAR crew actually got it “right”. When they said “check complete” they thought they were confirming a good goal, because they didn’t see the flag go up and the play was clearly onside. So they weren’t paying attention, which is obviously bad. But then they obviously knew what was happening but they supposedly were not allowed to tell the ref to stop the game. That part is ridiculous. If you are aware that there has been a game-changing mistake you have to correct it.

The alternative is what’s happened in the aftermath, which hasn’t been pretty.

Its truly an embarassment. As long as VAR is being manned by someone connected to the PGMOL its going to be doomed to fail.

Do it like the NHL, send it to Toronto.

They had a significant amount of time after the offside was confirmed to tell the referee the confusion and give the goal. It makes no sense that "check complete" is the only words they said.

Now I won't accept any moaning from Liverpool fans about VAR as they've benefited as much as they've been hurt, but that was a ludicrous situation and made the tech the story yet again.

Sack it off, VAR is hurting the game.

An orange card that was red. Can understand that.

Barely checking the goal by Diaz that looked on and they didnt show a line.

The 1st yellowcard to Jota that led to him being sent off.

The writers are back in hollywood! Scripted.

The red card was a red card and I truly don't understand the argument against it. Even if he hadn't touched the ball his boot was still making contact halfway up his leg. Intent doesn't really matter, it's about outcome.

The first Jota yellow was also correct. He got a little intentional flick on his leg which made it hit his other leg and sent him flying. It's a common yellow that's been built up because of everything else that went on.

The offside goal was a farce though. No excuse. Probably should have had a penalty too.

I forgot about the penalty. That doesnt bother me though. Not giving the goal because the VAR assistant wasnt paying attention should lead to firings. In an ideal world they would do what the NFL and NHL do with it all in a centralized area for reviews.

It's not the technology that's the problem, it's the people using it. If anything VAR is a good thing because the refs can't hide their incompetence anymore.

In this particular instance, if there was no VAR then the play still would have been ruled offside because that's what the linesman ruled. We just may not not have known about it. There certainly wouldn't have been this whole discussion, if they showed a replay then the response would probably have been, "The on-field officials blew another one! We need VAR!"

Adding more people adds the potential for yet more incompetence or if you're as cynical as i am, it adds more layers of corruption.

And you know what? That's fine. It was a tight offside when viewed at full speed and mistakes can happen. You get as many as you don't.

Goal line technology is proven to work all the time (except if you're Villa) so that's fine. If it's automated and no humans are involved then it's fine. But the problem is most football decisions aren't black and white and never will be so these mistakes will keep happening. VAR just serves to slow the game down and it creates as much debate as it solves. I'm also sick of half-celebrating a goal because you're unsure if it's going to count.

Honestly I’d be ok with that. But we all know it’s not going to happen. Something about putting molasses back in the bottle or whatever. That said, it seems like the PL has more trouble with VAR than other leagues. I watch the Bundesliga (although not as much) and VAR is there but not very noticeable from what I’ve seen.

It's cool to see how they do the lines, and that part worked perfectly, showing Diaz was well onside.

But that doesn't matter if they aren't communicating clearly with the ref.

"I can't do anything"

That's really the problem. VAR got it right, communication was effed, and they were screwed. Stop the damn game. Nobody dies.

This notion that stopping the game ruins it is laughable to me. I know players talk about not being able to celebrate, etc, but im sure thats just talk. Theyd all take winning the league over being screwed out of it at the end of the day.

Getting the call right > getting it fast.
