people act like the 2017-2018 leafs team was a juggernaut. yes, they set new records in points but the roster on paper was much weaker compared to current team. they also won six games in the SO and actually had fewer ROWs than last years team had. Mcbackup had to go on god mode during the back to back because leafs were outshot pretty bad in some of those games if I remember correctly. Even in 2018 playoffs, bruins outplayed the leafs , Imo leafs very lucky to make it to 7 games.

they were a good team, but some people acting like dubas took a cup contender turned them non playoff team.

Would Babcock play him?

He benched Martin. Martin played in the Islanders playoff games

Martin did play in playoff games with the Leafs in his first season. The fact he never assumed a regular PK role here made it easier to ultimately lose his spot.

For Reaves, considering the cap hit and being a RW, I'm not sure if the fit lines up that well. Cap considerations would have applied for Martin by now as well.

Not until everyone is healthy and he has a full team for ten game span , then the decision will be made
For the 10th time lol
If this continues after all of the above , it will happen before the new year

On the surface, this sounds rational and all however some teams go an entire season without having everyone healthy for a ten game stretch so if this were a prerequisite, it may never happen. Plus he's been here for so long, not sure what another 10 games will tell us about him that we don't already know.

Here is my take. Babs doesn't know what he's doing. Dubas doesn't know what he's doing. Shanahan doesn't know what he's doing. How can I come to that conclusion? I always look at the people doing the hiring. So, Rogers, Bell and Larry Tanenbaum did the hiring. I think we can all agree that none of those entities has any f***ing clue about anything. That to me = we are going to continue to suck for a long, long time.

This is truly how I see it, he loves to apportion blame anywhere but himself. Saying it "hurt my feelings" takes him from accepting responsibility for some things at puts it back onto him being hard done by.

what hurt his feeelings?

Anyone who figured out how to get a piece of the Leafs is a pretty smart dude to me. The ultimate Toronto money machine which prints every June.

To me there are a lot more important things than money. If you own any business to just make money at the expense of other people's happiness and enjoyment then you're not my kind of person. Guess I'm a socialist. I want everyone to have some fun in this life and that, to me, isn't always money.

I can’t figure out who’s being sarcastic in this thread. Help. How is Mike not taking blame when he squarely places the disorder on himself. He puts it on his shoulders to get things organized successfully. Things are not. Everyone knows the talent is there.
And now he can’t agree with someone from outside the organization if it’s accurate?
The team is underperforming. That’s on him. Sure it’s on the players too but you can’t fire all of them. You can replace the coach for poor performance. You cannot replace all the players for the same thing.

Do you have fun at Leaf games? You really can't enjoy them due to cost of tickets unless you make a pretty decent wage or someone gives them to you. Don't get me wrong life is much more than money but it helps a ton along the way I find. There are so many things I enjoy but without money they can't occur.

And I assume you DO know what you are doing? So what is your background in hockey/business/sports teams?

He said a comment like the one Ovi made "gets your attention, hurts your feelings"

It could be he was speaking from a group perspective, or an individual one. However, since he is not a player, the comments about playing for yourself rather than the team, he was likely speaking from a group perspective.

But that doesn't play as well as reporting he said "it hurts my feelings"

You're not suggesting benching Martin was a bad idea, are you?

I’m saying that we have a different philosophy.

Islanders made it to Round 2 with Martin. So he’s obviously capable of playing NHL hockey. Led the team in hits. Played more mins there too.

It’s true. Martin did play in the first playoff series. He had 2 points in 6 games, tying Boyle, Kadri and Kapanen for points

Next season, Babcock sent him to the press box for the stretch and he watched the playoffs from there.

Personally I think Babcock underperformed as coach with the Red Wings, to have Datsyuk, Zetterberg and Lidstrom for all those years and only took 1 cup? Red Wings had a lot more talent than nearly every team they faced in the playoffs yet fell short many many times, too early...sounds awfully similar to Toronto these last few years don’t it?

He’s also heavily overrated based off his Team Canada gigs, any coach could have stood behind that bench while Canada cruised to 2010 & 2014 Olympic gold.

Why did they pick him then?

Arguably better winger options in Martin's second season with the Leafs compared to his first. He's an NHL player. However, given his contract, the team's (lack of) cap space, and his role as a non-special teams fourth liner, being a lineup fixture was a less realistic possibility with Toronto. I wouldn't say toughness was what kept him in or out of the lineup.

Babcock is 100 per cent correct
This team as it is built cannot win playoff games

dubas has built an all skill team
Babcock cant coach a skill team

babcock wants a heavy team to win in the playoffs

dubas doesnt believe in the heavy philosophy

this team as built cant win with babcock as coach

there is a definite disconnect between dubas and Babcock

one has to go
Simple as that
