Everything is awesome:

Our breakout system in 2016 had success because the 3 amigos were still nobodies, and Babs style with the leafs was unknown.
2017 we added JT and had that hot PP for the first quarter of the season - because we still shocked some teams of our talent.

And then... the entire league adapted. There was enough tape, and enough credence to prepare vastly for the leafs. We have been on a downhill swing ever since.

We have all been complaining about the same thing for 2 years now, and we have moved on from JVR and Bozak to tighten up D.
Ok... still weak on D

Then we moved on from Komorov, Martin, Polak, Gards, Hainsey
Ok... still weak on D

Added Muzzin and Barrie
Ok... still weak on friggen D.

These symptoms are just screaming out COACH is LOSSSTT AF.

The scariest part about seeing the Jackets and Habs lack a deep roster but out play us due to structure is that they literally have to add a Marner type player, or a C like JT or Matthews alone - Just one of them - and they are suddenly winning more games steadily.

For recency analogy. Add a Marner type player to the habs top 6, 2 nights ago on SAT and all their muffin shots, take 1/3rd of them and make them into High Danger shots.

Hutch did Valiantly stopping 35 to 40 goals and kept us in the game. Leafs let like 4 breakaways happen and got walked constantly.

We are at our ceiling and its dangerous to be this scarily underperforming.

Lets see where we are by end of NOV.
I expect changes if we are absolutely lifeless.

Islanders are about to win their 7th straight game...while playing guys like Matt Martin, Clutterbuck, Komarov and heck even Ross Johnston every night.

And we couldnt even let Martin play a single game against the Bruins 2 seasons ago.

Goes to show thats not about just players. Trotz is just a far better coach than Babcock

Same Islander team being led by a dinosaur while we are being led by a GM who is ahead of the curve ??

I've wanted Babcock gone for awhile. So far this year I'm not sure it's fair to him ( not that I would lose sleep over it). The Leafs have had a huge roster turnover, lots of back to back games and a decent amount of injuries. There has also been a lack of defensive effort from the stars of the team. Its the lack of defensive effort I find most interesting. IS Matthews laying down, wanting Babcock gone? If that is his master plan I'd have a lot more respect for him if he went over Babcocks head to Dubas or Shanahan and said look Babs got to go. I believe there are things going on behind the scenes we aren't privy to that will eventually come out. The Leafs finally have a captian and I think they have more turmoil in the locker room than they've ever had. It needs to be resolved. The sooner. The better.

They need to act quickly to bring in a new coach. It has worked wonders with the PowerPlay. Since they brought the new guy in, it's damn near unstoppable.

They compete every night. Every second of every shift is everything they’ve got. I’m sure Babcock is envious.

It’s almost like Lamoriello recognizes that character and work ethic are just as important as speed and puck skills? It’s almost like those different player types at the bottom create a more diverse group that can do more?

Dubas might catch on, eventually.
Babcock is envious? He had Matt Martin, scratched him for 18 games straight, so the Leafs had to trade him. Under a competent coach like Trotz, Martin is playing his roll well and the Islanders are on a 7 game winning streak while we look lost and disorganized, even though on paper we are a much better team.

In Fairness to the new coach...some other kind poster actually spent the time to watch the Panthers PP from last year and didn't see any drop back passes...let alone the double drop that is so far back the camera doesn't see the player getting the puck because he is in a different area code. So, if he didn't do them last year and had the 2nd best PP...what happened? we used the infamous drop back for the whole time Hiller was the coach. So this new guy comes in and does the exact same thing as Hiller....is anyone else putting this together? Did he call Hiller and ask for tips or does Babs feel this is the best way to gain the zone?

I keep saying this but Craig Button said it best "The Leafs are told to apply pressure, pressure and MORE mindless Pressure." I couldn't put my finger on what it is about our style of Defense that sucks and is ineffective...but that seems to sum it up. Nobody really knows what to do or who to cover because they are all looking to go after the puck carrier like a moth to a flame. How many times do you see the other guys get open because 2 or more Leafs are watching the puck carrier and ignoring their guy? They never bloody turn their heads to look around and see what's happening behind them.

If you're a player and you feel the system is bad and you keep getting blamed for not working hard enough...eventually your gonna pack it in and say "enough of this clown show" and stop trying as hard....they may be millionaires...but they are still human after all.

I don't think any coach in the cap era has been given more talented rosters than he's been given, and besides that one stretch in 07-09, he hasn't really done much with it. Internationally is irrelevant. He was given an entire roster of top 100 NHL players. If you can't win with that, then you aren't going to be coach.

I think what is telling is that Babcock has been nominated for only one Jack Adams award his entire career, and he came in 3rd... That was in the year he won the Cup. Hasn't even been in the top 3 for voting otherwise. Trotz has won 2.

Babs stubbornness has me thinking he may have checked out. If so, let's get on with it and bring in the boy Wonder's coach sooner than later. If that fails, time to send Dubas back to the Soo and put Shanny on the hot seat. All this crap is happening under his watch after he handed the reigns to Dubas.

This.

Also, I hope Dubas picks the best coach available, rather than simply handing the reigns to Keefe because of their two person not-that-old boys club that dates back to their Soo days.

Ok, lets not get to wild about this. It's because of their coach, not the GM. If we are going to rag on Babcock and rightfully so, we have to give credit to a great coach doing his job as well. Because that Islanders team playing Babocks system is 1-7

So what you're saying is, on one hand, on the PP our head coach has basically told our PP coach not to get involved because he knows better, the GM is OK that this is happening despite him hiring said PP coach. The players are listening to Babcock, thus deploying the drop pass on the PP, despite bad results for 18 months.

However, on the other hand, 5vs5 the players are tuning our head coach out because of poor reaults and are "packing it in".

If that's the case, does our GM have a handle on anything that is going on within the organization? Is he too scared to fire the coach? Does he know his assistant coach he hired is being overruled and the our head coach has the ears of the players? But at the same time he has lost the players at 5vs5?

What a mess.

I mean that falls on Shanahan and im sure its not lost on him either. But the bad part is how much money you invested in this coach plus you have a personal history with him and probably some verbal agreements behind the scene. The whole thing sounds tricky but im sure it wont be long before a move is made. The Shanaplan and the Dubas Supremecy are at stake.

I was one of the very few people left that believed he is going to turn around this team but I was wrong. I believe it's time for him to go. The team look disengaged, lost without any motivation
I was so pumped when the Leafs first hired Babcock. But you watch the games, look at the system and structure, how the coach treats the players and motivates them, do in game adjustments, line combos, and if he takes any responsibilities for loses. You look at this and form your own opinion. After observing his tenure here, I can’t wait for the Leafs to fire him. Cant be soon enough for this guy.

I’m kind of flip flopping on Babcock. On the one hand, he makes some baffling decisions. On the other, I think maybe having half the cap on 4 forwards is an impossible position for the coach.
Sure, the Pens had some great years with their 4 highest paid players making almost as much as the leafs.

But that’s when Crosby was hands down the best player in the world, and Malkin not too close behind. The leafs forwards now just aren’t in any way comparable and dominant as what Crosby and Malkin were.
For this to work, the leafs stars would have to perform like Crosby/Malkin did, and like McDavid and Drai currently are. Complete domination. Being “great” simply isn’t good enough. They have to be the best. And they’re nowhere near that so far this season. And that leaves 50% of the cap for 20 other players, while our star players are no better than the other teams VASTLY cheaper star players.

If they want any shot whatsoever at even getting in that ballpark, they need to play those mega minutes those guys play. But it kind of sucks, the Leafs star players are putting so little effort in on a game-to-game basis right now. Lots of nights the 3rd line players are more effective just by virtue of how much harder they're working.
