A lot of the Blues' worst defensive contracts expire relatively soon, like Leddy and Krug. Krug may, in fact, be LTIRetired. Faulk is still an OK player and Perunovich is finally starting to trend upwards after numerous injuries. They're likely kicking themselves about Walman and especially Mikkola, however.
Walman who the Wings just gave up a 2nd to get rid of?

I think the Podkolzin trade was a low risk backup in case they had nothing else. I suspect the gift from Grier materialized.
It was low risk but this is their forward group with Kane on LTIR and assuming they match on Holloway:

RNH - McDavid - Hyman
Skinner - Draisaitl - Arvidsson
Janmark - Henrique - C. Brown
Holloway - Ryan - Perry

In their situation, spending a 4th rounder to add a 1 M potential healthy scratch who is more of a project at this point would seem to be a bit of a waste.

Pretend for a minute it’s Chicago who had Broberg and Holloway. There’s less than 0% chance the Blues would help them with this type of deal under any circumstance.

I could see it if the Blues said sure we’ll help take Ceci as long as you’re sending a first, which Chicago (Edmonton) couldn’t pay.
Only works if everyone holds out. SJ is the 'free-rider' in this circumstance.

It’s not terrible. If there’s a chance we can trade ceci for another third next year I’ll take it.
And if Emberson is playing in Edmonton on a regular basis you gave up a cost-controlled defenseman for some picks when we have no good young right handers in the system. It's improvement because Ceci is better than Emberson, but short-sighted overall IMO

I like this move by San Jose. Get a 3rd with Ceci, play him lots of minutes this season and flip him for a 2nd or 3rd at the trade deadline with retention.

Edit: SJ is out of retention slots, but even if they paid a third team to retain 50% at the deadline that should only cost a 4th, maybe a 5th if they can bid it down. Still leaves room for SJ to net a 3rd or better if Ceci performs well enough this season.

I don't think the relationship between SJ and EDM is anywhere near the rivalry between STL and CHI. As a Sharks fan I don't really consider the Oilers to be rivals, our windows of being good just barely overlapped. If we made a deal like this to help out VGK ANA or LAK I'd be annoyed.

Grier is the worst GM in NHL history, and it is not particularly close.
I don't think that is true

I don't get the hate for Grier on this. First off he just made his team better. Ceci is an underrated veteran who the Oilers wanted to keep if not for cap reasons.

The Sharks can get more value from him later. If they retain, Ceci is amazing depth as a bottom pairing guy who can play up the lineup

They got a pick from the deal

The Podkolzin trade proves that just because the fans think that teams will just screw a team like the Oilers for all these 1st rounders or whatever is just utter BS. There is leverage but not THAT much. If the Sharks played that game, another team would have jumped on the opportunity to get a decent player and a pick.

It's possible Oilers might even win this trade.
