...surely we can agree, though, that Coffey is still one of the greatest ever defenceman to ever play though?
He was atrocious defensively. The funny part is, Bowman put up with him in both Pittsburgh and Detroit (for awhile), because of his offensive ability, and puck possession, even though they got into it many times.. It’s funny how much better Detroit became after he was sent packing, because you never think of how bad he is, when was skating the puck at will.

Look, Im a big Coffey fan, but he was a wing playing D in the NHL and very few players ever got away with it at that level of success, being that bad defensively. I was on the ice with him a few times when he was playing in LA and I was in Long Beach. I’d played with and against some great players who went on to great success in the NHL. He could do things I couldn’t even comprehend as a dman. When you’re a 21 year old kid thinking you have a chance and step on the ice with players like Coffey, you have a long look in the mirror afterwards. I still thought the boards were my best friend, and that I’d be benched for passing the puck anywhere near the middle of the ice, and this guy could skate through the best of the best, at will.

At the end of the day though, he still hurt teams as things get tighter in the playoffs. It’s why he played for so many teams.

In no way would I ever compare Walman with Coffey except to say, people in SJ are making the same mistake many in Detroit made originally, and some still do. They judge him purely off of the good, and ignore all the bad. He literally couldn’t play in Detroit, with anyone but Seider.

He’s in the best situation for himself right now, because there’s no expectations. Nobody’s gonna be breaking down every shift because SJ isn’t going to be in the playoff hunt. So they’ll concentrate on the good. I thought maybe he had turned the corner too, for about a month in Detroit, but he quickly went back to the old Jake Walman. Where Seider spent half of his shifts, recovering from Walman’s turnovers.

It just became too much and they tried moving him down to the bottom pairing, and it didn’t last a complete game. He was stapled to the press box for the remainder of the season.

Jake’s a filler Dman. That’s what he’ll likely be the rest of his career. Someone you can play minutes because he’s physically capable, in a Top 4 role on teams rebuilding, etc. Once you start having your young Dmen getting ice time, you really don’t want players like him and his bad habits, taking their ice time, and he’s not good enough to protect them defensively, as a partner. Like a Maatta for example.

The Sharks will move on from him as soon as their young kids are starting to demand ice time, and their games become more important.. Very rarely will you have a young kid like Seider, who can already protect other players at 21-22 years old. Detroit now has 2 more of their prospects playing now, so it was time to send Jake to his next bad team, as Detroit was taking that next step. Guarantee, the same outcome happens in SJ.

That's why they're a basement team. Walman should be a 5-6.
Walman was a #2 on this team for 1.5 years when they weren't a basement team. But apparently playing poorly after an injury and getting the toughest minutes in the league makes you a bad dman. Luckily the 2nd was useless to the Wings based off of Yzerman's draft history

You have no idea what you are talking about. Walman was never a regular #2 defenseman @ ES. Walman was a mid-pair defenseman in Detroit.

This is so stupid…

Insert Cale Makar or Quinn Hughes on the Sharks and they’re still the lowly sharks, far from contention. Your argument makes no sense.

That said, Wallman is probably being overrated because of the shiny new toy effect at the moment

80% of last season, which was their best season of the last decade, he was the #2 dman. He played the toughest minutes, with the 2nd highest TOI. Which apparently translates to needed a 2nd to dump.. not the best move, especially since he was one year into his deal.

No thats stupid. He didnt say that if Walman was a better defenseman they'd be a good team. He said that only on a bad team is Walman a top-pairing defenseman.

You are confused. For 1-100% of the season Walman was a mid-pairing PK specialist defenseman. He never played the tough minutes regularly at ES.

Or do you believe Ghost was a top-4 defenseman for the Wings last season?

What are you talking about? He was paired with Seider for the majority of the year..

I have to say, based on the previous Walman hype adjacent to the trade that went down where a 2nd round pick got attached to him, he has to be one of the most overhyped players at the moment.

Glad he's doing well in San Jose after this short time. It clearly wasn't working out for him in Detroit. They got a decent amount out of him considering there were zero expectations of him when he was acquired. He needed to be moved ASAP for a deal that got nixed by the targeted player himself (Trouba). Oh well, he's not remotely a cornerstone piece and there's less expectation and structure for him currently. I think that suits him best

At face value the deal looks bad, but there's nuance and context must be considered. Believe it or not, some players are meant to have a change of scenery. It's not always "bad GM this, bad GM that"

Unrelated, but it sounds exactly like the Kuzmenko conversation. Great player but hasn’t proven he’s a guy you can win with when the games matter.

Ok it's one of many reasons they're a basement team. Happy now? Walman isn't even a second pair guy on a contender. Don't be obtuse.

You do realise that for the first half of the year Seider was on the second pairing at ES, right?
That's not how that works.. but okay lol. Either way we traded a decent dman that was just signed and had to attach a 2nd. It's a horrendous move

I'd love to think we'll have 6 young D to push him out by the end of next season but that's not happening.

He's been solid the first 3 games. Small sample size but encouraging. Very happy with the early returns on this trade, especially as we got a solid prospect in Leo Sahlin Wallenius from it too...

That is how it works. You just don't like the fact that Walman never was a #2 because then you would be wrong. The more the season went on the more ice-time Seider got on ES and the less Walman got on ES. The only reason they were paired together was because Walman matched well with Seider. Not because Walman was a #2 defenseman. That's a ridiculous argument.

They both got caved in together, so they both aren't too pairing dmen. Why did Yzerman trade for, and then sign a guy he thought was bad?

Now you are making a nice little strawman. Never said he was bad but let's get into that contract. Is Walman paid like a #2 defenseman?

He's paid at worst like a #4 dman

Let's skip the whole "at worst" because it makes no sense I could say "at best like a #4" and it would be equally meaningless. He's paid an average defenseman salary because he's valued as an average defenseman. Yet you believe he was valued as a #2?

He was playing on the top pair of a team trying to make the playoffs, while getting historically hard deployment. Lalonde definitely valued him as one
