Couple things...
-Talking about next season... it's done at this point. Even if the Kings manage to win out against the Sharks they aren't going anywhere with the defense. Healthy Martinez and maybe they find a way to beat the Sharks.

-Williams is a good DEPTH scoring option for the caps. Other guys draw the tougher defenders. Unfortunately Williams 3rd line role is being filled by Brown now, which necessitated an actual top 6 forward being brought in. Williams, at this point, would be struggling on the top line with Kopitar. Now I'd much rather have Williams at 3M on the 3rd line then Brown at 6, but that has nothing to do with the fact that Lucic is an actual top 6 forward.

I'd be interested to see how things would go if the energy guys were sprinkled throughout the lineup more to get things going. Cliff / Lewis / Versteeg / Andreoff / Vinny to some extent, have been busting their ***** and often had the most impressive shifts.

Something like ...

Clifford - Kopitar - Toffoli
Lucic - Lecavalier - Carter
King - Lewis - Gaborik
Brown - Andreoff - Versteeg

There's a lot of the top guys not showing up. Lucic has been awful. Gaborik has been alright. Kopi has been okay, but for the Kings to win he needs to be better than just okay. I've noticed that the Kings aren't getting really any sustained offensive zone time (except in the third period last night). There's a lot of sustained defensive zone time, followed by dumping the puck into the Sharks zone and having the line change, and having SJ break the puck out and into the Kings zone without much difficulty.

The biggest problem is the defence. I don't mind Vinny all that much, but Schenn is not what was needed. What they needed was a PMD that could fit in on the top 4 with either Drew or Muzzin (if they are going to continue to keep them separated). Liles would have been a good fit. The problem is that Scuderi and the Mc's can't fill that role. When is Martinez supposed to be back anyways?

I also don't understand Versteeg on the 4th line, it just seems like such a waste. Could've gotten somebody probably cheaper to play 8mins a game or whatever he's playing

Unless he's playing injured, I don't understand why Versteeg gets so limited ice time.

If Carter doesn't step his game up, we won't make it to game 7.

Lombardi has been a terrible GM since we won the last cup.

Not one deal has panned out or will pan out.

Even if the Vinny deal looks good, he is going to retire and Schenn could walk.

yet if V-douchenozzle doesn't turn into an asshat and get deported we are a cup caliber team (looking at this regular season one could debate the team is without him) and everyone is praising how well constructed the team is.

He locked in a #1C with a chance at the hall, took a gamble on top line LW, and tried to bring a d (schenn) to help give depth..Not a bad year.

Plus versteeg just cost Zykov. Not the biggest loss consider LA has other prospects above him in the depth chart.

Disagree we had the PMD in Martinez. We needed someone to shore up the 3rd pairing. Schenn is very capable of that. I thought it would work out better than it did, but Martinez going down through Schenn into a higher role than he was brought in for.

If Voynov had been a kind and nonviolent husband, we would have had a Top 4 of Doughty, Muzzin, Voynov and Martinez, a fearsome D that could have helped the forwards so they could produce more offense instead of the other way around. Balance, it all comes down to balance. Everyone is trying to make up for the deficient D, or rather, players not being able to be slotted correctly. The D is working hard and Scuderi and Schenn are trying their best to elevate their game in their expanded minutes, but the imbalance is affecting everyone.

That's fair. I'm certainly looking at things in a hindsight is 20/20 kind of way

Yeah, even sans Martinez, defensive depth was the concern--and going into the playoffs without at least someone who can remotely cover him was tempting fate and bad GMing to an extent.

So because of that in particular i'm curious to see DL"s plans this summer.

In order to rest our best D, what Sutter could do is put 4 forwards and 1 D out there for our power plays.... I mean, do this until Martinez gets back...... Would it really be that bad? It might actually result in a better power play......

We did it before a few weeks ago with Versteeg at the point, they may as well try, just to shake it up, Sutter has pretty much remained stagnant all series, he needs to shake it up somewhere

Technically the Kings lost Mitchell, Regehr, Voynov, a prime Scuderi and technically Greene, Martinez for an older Scuderi who is a borderline AHL'er at this point, Luke Schenn, and Jamie McBain.

Scuderi and McBain were in the AHL and Schenn was a healthy scratch many times in Philly.

Enough said.

Bingo, bongo.

Too much turnover on the blueline. Drew hard carried them again this year.

Yep. Win every 3v3 OT as opposed to losing every OT/SO the year before.

Doughty and the system are a good enough blue line to have this team challenging for the playoffs every year with Quick in net and the top-end talent up front, but this is not currently a D corp that can win in the playoffs against a really talented offensive team.

They pulled it out with Schultz in 2014 against Anaheim somehow: problem is they are rolling three Schultz's out there right now.

Much like Chicago last season, LA was going to have to lean on four guys on the back end and hope they stayed healthy. Well, they couldn't even go into Game 1 with those four guys healthy so here we are.

Couple that with some no-shows from the top forwards and you have a nightmare, which I believe I said this would be prior to the series if Martinez couldn't play.

so the answer is to DL?:shakehead

Guys, please do not forget that these have all been 1-goal-games. The only game where we were flat-out, out-played was game 1, and that really could have gone either way. The stats will catch up with the Sharks....

but will it catch up in time?

If San Jose get by LA I think they go to at least the western conference finals.

Really? I think they are a second round exit. They are barely getting by a Kings team with a depleted and exposed defensive core.

that's one way to look at it..the other is they are getting by a team that was top in the league in crosi, plays them more physical and Nashville or Anaheim would be able to, and a kings team that was among the top in the league in goals against.

I know martinez hurts LA, but have to give San Jose some credit.

It is not over, yet.
The road ahead will not be easy.
The Kings have won 3 in a row before.
The Sharks have lost 3 in a row before.
Until the the Kings lose another they have a chance.
The 5 on 5 defense has not been horrid.
I refuse to start planning for next year until this one is done.
The rest of you can call it quits but as long as there is a chance, however unlikely, I say Go Kings Go
