Yeah, even sans Martinez, defensive depth was the concern--and going into the playoffs without at least someone who can remotely cover him was tempting fate and bad GMing to an extent.

So because of that in particular i'm curious to see DL"s plans this summer.

To be fair, he did have a lot of restrictions to what kind of moves he could make. I think he could have gotten something better than what he got, but he wasn't going to move out a guy like Kempe to do it.

No idea what he does next season. The most interesting piece to me is what happens with Lucic.

but will it catch up in time?

If San Jose get by LA I think they go to at least the western conference finals.

I see this as their Stanley Cup, they have so much emotion in this series I can defenetly see a let down in the 2nd round, especially if it's Nashville and not Anaheim.

Yeah, and he said as much, which is why I'm curious to see what he's trying to do.

After going 'all-in' getting Lucic, we got to the deadline and he essentially said "no more gutting the farm." So, something's up, because we're in limbo--no ability or desire to sell all-in to get an upgrade, but no real huge pieces on the farm to supplement the club's window....

Man, can you imagine now if we had Big Buff like the rumor?

I suspect a major re-tool will be in order, and I wonder if this will be Sutter's last year as well, though I'm not sure if there's any better options for coaches out there. It did the Pens a world of good (twice). Its too bad a guy like Tippett isn't available.

I really think Dean only had Big Buff in mind at the deadline. He really was the true impact D-man on the market before he re-signed.

If Kempe or even someone like Pearson was the missing piece to acquiring Byfuglien, I'll be pissed. It makes no sense to spend so many assets filling holes with prime NHL players like Lucic and then all of a sudden skimp on filling our biggest hole.

But I don't think Lombardi is that lost right now. We don't know if Byfuglien was ever really that available. It could have all been a ploy by his agent to force Winnipeg's hand into a contract. Maybe Winipeg was asking for something absurd like Toffoli. Or my guess: they wanted another young D like Martinez in return, plus Kempe. I could easily see Lombardi balking on Martinez, Kempe, and a pick for Buff.

I still don't know how much Lombardi really has to work with this offseason. I don't think Lucic is re-signed; I really don't. Both sides have exchanged contract offers, and there has been total radio silence since. I'm fairly certain that Lombardi sees exactly what we see: Lucic is an aging player, like Brown and Richards, without the raw natural skillset to remain relevant in this league after his physical game wears down. And after Lucic's god awful postseason performance, I don't think Lombardi is hankering to re-sign him, anyway.

Pretty sure we walk away from the contract if we go out to SJ. Maybe there is something in the works with a Brown trade. Lombardi was close to getting rid of Richards at the draft--there are indeed desperate teams looking for veteran, championship players. It won't be pretty, but I think Lombardi can rid us of the Brown contract. Brown has more value currently than Richards did last summer, IMO.

At that point, with that much cap opened up, who knows what Lombardi cooks up. In my mind, according to Lombardi's philosophy, there are five core, unmovable players on the team right now: top two centers (Kopitar and Carter), top two defensemen (Doughty and Muzzin), and starting goaltender (Quick). Everyone else is open, or at least I would think (even Toffoli). That is, assuming, Lombardi wants to really shake up the team. If he can get a young, cost controlled D plus recoup some assets for Toffoli, I think Lombardi really thinks about that long and hard. Young top four D are harder to find than young top six wingers.

As disappointing as this may be, take a moment and step back a bit here. This Kings core and Dean Lombardi accomplished what they were supposed to do - win multiple cups during what most people consider the 5-year cup window for a given core. I never thought I would see the Kings win a cup, and now we have two cups.

I just hope Dean doesn't make the mistake that Vancouver and Toronto and other teams make - keep believing that they can fix huge holes in the roster with quick fixes.

As our roster looks next year, we have to essentially rebuild half of our defense, and fill up our forward roster. Dean can either try his luck at reclamation projects (e.g., Vinny and Schenn trade) or we can use the next two-three years to see what our youth (and other acquired young players) can do. The fact of the matter is there is no top defenseman available during the summer that will suddenly make us a cup contender and we cannot get one in a trade without creating another hole in our roster (e.g., trading Toffoli for a top defenseman, like the Jones for Johnnsan trade).

I am just glad Dean didn't do what the Hawks did at the trade deadline and trade away assets and picks. I am okay with doing a full rebuild, but only keeping Kopitar, Quick, Toffoli, Doughty and Muzzin. Maybe by the time the youth from the rebuild develop, this core will still be competitive.

Huh, Sutter kinda getting on the refs, that's unusual.

Amen.

We have one game left and everyone is talking about next season. Did we give up when the Germans invaded pearl harbor?! You sad sack of monkey farts better get up and cheer for this damn team until the very end!

I love this team, and it has sucked for most of the time that i watched them. I never thought i would see them lift a cup and now i have seen it twice! Be happy you aren't blues fans. I hate those guys.

Amen... I dug up the PGT when we were down 0-3 vs. the Sharks in 2014. Man, was that some good reading if you're a masochist.

I always hate to see players and coaches call out the officiating, because of the way it appears to opposing teams (and fanbases).

But Darryl is right on the money there. And he never calls out the officiating. The Kings have been on the **** end of officiating all season (according to raw statistics, not biased eye tests), almost inexplicably. We're getting called for ticky tack plays and not getting those same calls in our favor.

The reality, though, is that the Kings aren't generating anything 5v5, which is much more of an issue than an even playing field with special teams. I think Darryl knows that, too.

The problem I have with the officiating in this series and in the others is the fact that they are calling every single borderline penalty (more than the regular season in fact), the calls are inconsistent, and sometimes for stupid reasons, like the penalty St. Louis got because Crawford attacked the Blues' player or the penalty on Carter for roughing in the last game.

In my opinion, the strongest team should win a series, not a team that is bad 5-on-5, but great at special teams. I am not saying this in particular regarding the Kings v. Sharks series, because the Sharks are a very talented team and would likely still be up in the series with or without these bad calls. I just like the playoffs from before where the refs were very careful with their calls because it could just hand one team a game (e.g., the Kings win in game 3 and Sharks win in game 4).

It hasn't been playoff hockey except for the fact it is late April.

Officiating has been a joke across the board for the most part but it seems they've made it a point to take the air out of the LA/SJ series.

The wussification of the game continues and now the playoffs are no longer immune from it.

The lack of any calls at the end of the game when the Kings were mounting a comeback and dominating play was definitely frustrating but if the PK was better they never would have needed to make that comeback.

We really need Martinez back to lessen the load on Doughty and Muzzin but he could easily be done for the season :/

The carter call sucked, was odd the ref would single out one guy in the first scrum of the game. I am guessing the ref said something and then Carter through that punch (if you can call it that) right after forcing the ref's hand. Bottom line though is LA needs to do a better job killing penalties. It was a problem down the stretch and other than game three has been a problem so far against the sharks.

Yesterday Sharks scored 3 pp goals it was 3-2 and we had like 3 missed calls which would have given us an opportunity to tie the game. So with all that going against us i still like our chances because the boys can play but i actually want to lose in the first round so we can make drastic changes to our system and bottom 6. Evolve and add some speed and skill. Get away from the grind and grit game.

When we scored 2 goals back to back and Jones tripped Brown and the ref didnt call it thats when i knew we would lose because we had all the momentum and the refs ****ed us

The beef I had with it is that they didn't take a Shark too...when the reason Carter threw a punch was because Toffoli got crosschecked in the face and again right in the teeth.

It is what it is at this point, though. Have to just use that as fuel going forward, knowing full well that we've shot ourselves in the foot with bad PKing.

Come on. Carter didn't need to punch that guy in the face. It probably looked worse then it actually was. Don't think there was a lot of force behind it. Scuderi/McBain earned their penalties. The defense is in over their heads and taking penalties because of it. Put that with SJ's powerplay, a second PK unit of Scuderi/Schenn and the refs have zero to do with the loss. Sure it would be nice to get that slash on Carters stick or that trip on Brown, but the Kings had other chances.

Bottom line, don't take stupid penalties if you know the PK sucks. This is the Kings we are talking about so fixing the PK is probably going to need to happen before the stupid penalties stop.

Side note: Can you imagine what happens if Lombardi trolls HF by letting Lucic walk? :naughty:

Team have to overcome bad calls or missed calls, because those are going to happen.

So far the Kings have not played well enough to overcome those.

If we decided to do a full rebuild, I wonder what boat load of prospects and picks we would get trading Kopitar, Doughty, Quick etc. Considering their value is close to their peak, this might not be a bad time to start the rebuild and try to pry the first overall pick. Don't see how fixing things on the fly is going to make us a contender again.
