Should it be cancelled ?

the tournament should never have started in the first place. it doesn't matter whether it's the rules of the IIHF or the Canadian government. Even if the probability of long-term consequences in case of an infection were low, no one would want to take this risk even with a 1:1000 chance. If a Team Canada player tested positive and this was ignored and then Owen Power became infected and developed myocarditis, who would be liable and where could he sue for lost wages if he had to stop playing hockey?

i'm sure some people would say it's his risk and he doesn't have to play, but they're the same people who would have insulted him if he didn't participate because of covid...

I guess things are not as easy as some might think...

I also wonder why the f*** you would want a wedding at a random hotel in Red Deer in the middle of winter. Don’t know much about the place but it seems less than glamourous.

Instead of forfeiting games because there were one (or two/three) positive cases, they should do rapid tests before the game for those that tested negative, and if the team has enough negative players, let them play instead of forfeiting the game.

Quarantining the whole team for a full day doesn't seem like a good idea... the NHL would postpone a ton more games if it was their policy (and they're already postponing a ton!).

I made a pre-xmas poll whether there will be a 2022 wjc champ. At the time 100% of the voters thought the tourney will be played.

Wonder how the results would look now
What people want is different than can it be played. Everyone would want but … sometimes there are other factors and we can’t have it.

It doesn't help that this thing has become hyper-politicized for some reason, most of that rightfully focusing on the idiot COVID-denying, refusal to wear a mask, anti-vax fools, but now it's starting to swing the other way too with the other side supporting overly draconian COVID measures in lieu of the actual threat as a sort of "believe in the science" badge of honor.
Totally agree. I was super annoyed with antivax morons, now I’m equally annoyed with these “no cases ever” crows. Ffs, it’s harmless if you have the vaccine. Why do I care anymore about the health of idiots that won’t get it.

ffs. Just use common sense and let’s move on.

I do find it kind of amusing that forfeiting for positive tests is basically a battle of who has the stronger immune system as a team. Kind of a fun little Hunger Games.

Will these players really be ”safer” at home? This disease is not an issue whatsoever for a healthy vaccinated 18 year old. Playing hockey is far, far more dangerous, maybe that’s what you meant?
The only way Hockey Canada considers shutting this thing down is if Connor Bedard , Owen Power and a couple of their stars go down...

How about we quit testing one of the healthiest and least at risk age groups, yeah?

Whose going to take responsibility if someone gets infected, doesn't know about it, plays and gets serious health issues, maybe even dies? Any physical exercise when sick can cause serious issues.

Cancel the tournament. Health of these young people are much more important than some entertainment.

Is it even the IIHF though or more the government of Canada? Honest question because I think the government and their Covid restrictions has alot to do with it
The only thing the government regulates is the fans

So you want a game to be played no matter what so you can get your daily dose of hockey? Kinda selfish.

if we’d do it the way you propose, a taxi squad would have helped. Extra team would be even better.

But going thru that just to play a hockey game?

What is all this garbage about the tournament’s “integrity”? As long as the best teams play in the knock out round, there’s no problem. Who cares if Canada plays the US in the first knock out game, for example, rather than after both knock out a couple teams they are expected to handily beat?

This is fear mongering. There is no evidence that healthy, vaccinated people are going to die from Covid. Equally like they would die from the flu.
We have to return to some semblance of common sense or the rest of our lives is going to be not worth living

It's the third largest city in Alberta and a good hour and a half drive from Edmonton and Calgary.. I'm sure there's plenty of weddings there.

Pretty dumb at this point but I feel like they're too far in to cancel it. It was never taken too seriously anyway, I can see an argument if the Olympic tournament had like 3-4 forfeits it should be canceled as the results become completely delegitimized (not that there is much now with no NHL players), but this is essentially a training tournament for the prospects to get experience. It's not really meant to claim which country has superior talent over another and cement that with a star on a jersey...

So I vote no, let the teams who can still play play. Again, it's for the benefit of the prospects (and scouts to see them in action - better more than less) and not for the record books here.

Who’s going to take responsibility if someone doesn’t get infected, then plays and then dies?

Heads need to roll at the IIHF and Hockey Canada for this debacle. Covid should be treated seriously but they couldn't be running a worse tournament if they tried.
My friend this is about money, patriotism and Canada getting revenge on the Americans and winning gold.

Yet we don't test for anything but Covid. I'm not saying we shouldn't care, but this line of argument does seem a bit weak after the vaccines.
