San Jose is obviously in an ideal situation with the next two drafts. I'm not 100% sure I think Schaefer is BPA just yet but I think he'll emerge as more of a contender as the season goes on and could very easily be BPA. Dickinson while good, does not have the talent that Schaefer has, I think Dickinson will probably be a top 4 dman but his ceiling is closer to that then top pairing dman or #1. Due to his impressive physical attributes I think it could be possible but not guaranteed.Best player available; however, I will say that, relative to let’s say the last 4 drafts, Schaefer is better amongst recent defenceman (even number 1 I would say) than Hagens or Misa rank amongst recent forwards; granted, an elite 2C or above average 1C (which I think those two project to) is probably worth more to most teams than a top pairing D man, but relative to recent players in the recent drafts, I think Schaefer is the best player available, and would be my pick, especially given San Jose’s centre situation
You realize that Celebrini is somewhere between 1/2 an inch and 1 full inch taller than Hagens according to the latest measurements we have on these two players. Hagens is a little undersized, but so is Celebrini. If Hagens doesn’t have the size to be a slam dunk 1OA and play in all situations, it becomes a little hard to argue that Celebrini does.San Jose is obviously in an ideal situation with the next two drafts. I think Schaefer has #1 dman potential who can effectivly QB a quarterback and play PK while Hagens has impressive qualities I think his size and attributes don't make him a slam dunk #1OA that was assumed before September.
Hagens is not Celebrini level in my opinion and even if someone wants to make the case he has the same or greater offensive talent which I don't agree with, Celebrinis physicality is impressive for a 18 year old in the NHL and he will continue to use that to his strength as he gets stronger. So I can see why the Sharks would prefer Schaefer or Misa if they had #1OA, I think its harder for an organization to pick a winger 1 OA unless they are heads and shoulders above their competition like Lafreniere.
If for some hypothetical reason a different team didn't pick Hagens 1OA I think becomes a lot more likely they could pick Martone over him but I don't think that is too likely for them to pick a winger over a possible 1C or 1D.
If that's the case it'll come down to how much weight Hagens can put on as Celebrini is 190lbs and Hagens is 176lbs.You realize that Celebrini is somewhere between 1/2 an inch and 1 full inch taller than Hagens according to the latest measurements we have on these two players. You aren't allowed to move up from your spot more than 2 years in a 5 year span. Source: NHL.
If the worst team in the league keeps winning the lottery, they can keep picking 1OA.
See above. What are the rules again
They can get 1st overall this season and that’s it?
1-11-00When asked directly whether the Sharks interviewed Michkov, Grier responded that they interviewed all the Russian players they considered. I always took that to mean they didn't interview Michkov (and I got the sense they didn't interview him because he or his reps hinted/or outright stated he didn't want to be considered). Why not just say yes (if you did). If you didn't (particularly as a new GM with your first top 5 pick, that's moronic).
Grier's been pretty straight up with the media, the only reason to play coy is if it can help confuse team's on who you want, but saying 'yes, we interviewed him, and 40 other guys for our first three picks), we really like the top ~x in this draft, and were impressed by Michkov'. Even if you love the three big centers, and hate Mickov, nothing wrong with trying to incentivise Montreal, Philly, or Washignton to throw the earth at the teams ahead of you to try and grab the guy you don't want.
I admit it's fairly opaque, but even around the 2024 draft, sharks beat writer Sheng Peng tried to find out whether he was considered and didn't get a straight answer.
I'd love to get a different perspective though. While I liked (and expected) Smith, I wanted Michkov. If you'd be willing, do you mind pointing me in the direction of the sources saying he was open to going anywhere (particularly before the draft, but post-draft is okay too)?
I have never seen in modern days someone trade down for first overall pick to 3th. They will probably draft Hagen. As a Sharks fan, I'd probably trade down as far down as 3.
Your team has been in the bottom for a long time. Do you have any space in the top 6 for another elite forward?Would be cool if Anaheim got 1st overall for once
You always have space for roster improvements…. If the team still isn’t turning the corner then you have room.Your team has been in the bottom for a long time. Do you have any space in the top 6 for another elite forward?
A player like Martone would be great for Anaheim. You guys have multiple skilled forward. I can't imagine adding another top 3 picks to Anaheim. I can see Anaheim and San Jose being a top tier team in 4-5 years. You always have space for roster improvements…. If the team still isn’t turning the corner then you have room.
We’ve been bad since 2019 draft (which was a 9th overall pick)
Same time as Chicago/Montreal
SanJose has been bad just as long, but people forget because they traded away the stutzle pick, and the they traded down from pick 9

Because they have more than a few weeks of tape on the 2025 draft. There was a whole season last season and for the late birthdays the season before.I am not sure why people are having Hagens as 1st overall? Martone is currently killing it in the OHL at a 2.2PPG pace. It's way too early but if things hold as they are now, you are not drafting Hagens ahead just because he is a center.
The Sharks weren't bad when they were at the bottom of the league for years, Doug Wilson was just one move away from turning it around. You always have space for roster improvements…. If the team still isn’t turning the corner then you have room.

Definitely can’t miss with Hagens, Martone, Misa, Schaefer, Frondell, Ryabkin, McQueen as a top 7. Spence may be a great NHL prospect some day but wouldn’t put him with the other guys right now. Same thing with Moore and HenslerI don't think we're in a position to be able to get cute with augmenting future lineups when it's impossible to know which of the prospects in our pool will even make it, or meet their projected upside.
We need more skill, we need more size, we need more speed, we need defenders that can defend, we need defenders that can move the puck beyond a rec league level...
Heading into the season I would have taken Hagens, although the gap is shrinking.
I love Matthew Schaefer, and Misa and Martone have been fantastic to start the season. Frondell is lurking as well.
Can't really see us going wrong if we land somewhere in the top three.
Let's say the Sharks get the 1st overall pick, who do they take?
Do they not overthink it and take Hagens (if they all continue to develop at same rate) or do they take Martone out of team needs?
It's hard for me to see 3 smaller centers all with 1C potential on the same team. I don't see any of Hagens, Celebrini or Smith fitting in on the bottom 6, frankly it's a waste unless one is converted to wing.
What's most likely? Take Hagens, take Martone or try to trade back a spot or two for say hypothetically Flyers first and the Colorado or EDM 1st they own (est 3rd and 17th)
I thought teams can not win back to back anymore?
