Can we officially be excited about Will Smith and Musty? I’m sure each kid will have their struggles and we’ll see what they can do in the NHL, but man it’s nice to see them performing like this.
Being serious, I think it's more than fair to be optimistic about Smith. With Musty or anyone drafted outside the top of the first round, I think caution is merited. Making the roster next season, or barring that a strong rookie tournament/training camp would be a great sign.

It's a double-edged sword for sure. He's produced like a top-end prospect thus far, but there's always going to be the worry about whether he truly ends up working out as you would expect a top-5 pick should long-term.

Another 3 points for Smith. Unless Hockey East has fallen off a cliff in terms of league quality, I don't see how this kid isn't in the NHL next season.
For what it's worth, I'm not sure Will Smith views college hockey purely as just a developmental stepping stone that he need to conquer before moving on to greener pastures. He grew up in metro Boston and went to BC hockey games growing up with his dad/grandpa, who are both alumni of the school along with like 15 other people in his family. He also actively recruited Perrault/Leonard to go to BC with him.

If BC falls short in the tournament and finishes the year without any hardware, I imagine Smith will feel there is unfinished business, especially if his linemates who he convinced to enroll stay another season. BC is also adding the potential 2025 first overall pick in James Hagens next year, so they'll be in a good position to contend next year as well.

There are obviously other factors at play, but it shouldn't be a surprise if the teenager who has deep roots at a program that does a great job developing players tells the Sharks he would like to stay for his age 19 season. Gauthier said the reason he returned to BC this season was because he wanted to leave a legacy and play with a loaded incoming class, so this is something players in that program themselves have done very recently.

Add the fact that he knows that he would be part of a s**t-show, if he joins the Sharks next season.

Couldn’t blame him if he decides to go back to BC.

Wasn't it reported that Gauthier desperately wanted to sign with the Flyers after his freshman season and they turned him down, resulting in his trade to Anaheim?

I'm sure Smith loves playing for BC and living close to his family but probably not enough to leave a million bucks on the table by going back to school next year.

Yes yes it was but that was post trade. Originally it was what the first post said but post trade to Anaheim, it was that he wanted to go pro at the end of last season and Flyers said no so he asked out.

I honestly would have no problem with that if that’s what he wanted. A rebuild is a marathon and not a sprint.

I think the Sharks are going to be regretting these picks for a long time. Missing out on a future 1C and 1D? This is like the Boston 2015 draft level of bad.
Still bummed that we missed out on these two gems. Firkus is leading the WHL in points, and Casey is leading the NCAA in points as a Dman.
