Prospect Info: Shane Wright (Round 1, Pick #4, 2022 draft)

Can also add reddit to the list where some people are just out right trashing the guy.
My advice to you (and anyone else) is not to leave our boards if the preference is not to hear others trash our prospects or players.

To me, it was not shocking that Wright did not go 1OA. I felt that he didn't interview the best. Add that to the fact that he did not have the 'expected' season of a 1OA pick AND also the fact that he was supposed to perform like a player granted exceptional status; he most certainly did enough to raise the question if he deserved to go 1OA or not. Slaf has a tremendous Olympics and end of his season to boost his draft status as well. Same can be said of Nemec except that he was more consistent through the season.

For us, Wright was the perfect player to fall. I have read many scouting reports on him, and in all honesty he has been scouted as a fairly above-average player in most categories. The area he has been exceptional at is playmaking/passing and elite vision. However, his compete level has been questioned by several scouts. To me, that is less of a concern than how fans of other teams would treat it. The reason, for me, is simply because his elite vision and playmaking let him get away without that high-end compete. That will not work in the NHL. And he has a perfect partner in Beniers to learn that from. You need a motor and work hard no matter what your skill level is. And now he also has a chip on his shoulder. If he chooses to play with that, he will make other teams question not picking him earlier than us.

But all that will take a few years to see.

Couldn't have said it better. Pre-season can't come soon enough.

I feel the same way too, but not sure if "forcing" him into the NHL if he is not ready would be any better.

He cannot play in the AHL. It's OHL or NHL for him, and if he struggles at the NHL level, it could be much worse than sending him back to the OHL.
I guess we will see. I think people are over reacting to the fact that he dropped to 4th and under estimating this kids game. It going to be fun to watch, and I hope the kraken fans get what they deserve with Shane.

The Shane Wright I last saw in the OHL wasn't close to NHL ready, it has nothing to do with draft position for me. Let's just hope he has a terrific summer and shows up ready for battle.

I wonder if there was any consideration of sending him to the Swiss league for a year? It's about the same level of difficulty as the AHL, might be in that sweetspot for him.

Do you just search the internet looking for any website, blog or video that has opinions you don’t like, which you then proceed to get upset about it?

A nickel’s worth of free advice:

There’s beautiful weather in the PNW right now. Enjoy the rest of the summer. Relax. There’s gotta be a better use of your time other than searching for reasons to get mad.

This was a great pick for Seattle. Rather like the drafts in the last 6 years when players expected to go higher dropped into the Canucks hands, Hughes, Podkolson and this years pick hopefully. For Seattle to get Wright is great A #1 rated player who drops often goes onto have a great career Think Pat Lafontaine. If he hadn't had the injuries in Buffalo he would have amassed many more points. Wright will be the kind of 200 foot centre who scores you will need for years to come.

Kraken is going to be insane with Beniers and Wright. I don't care what MTL's gm was thinking. I don't understand why they'd give up a potential duo of Wright and Suzuki for, Suzuki, Slafkovsky and Dach. I think they'll regret not picking Wright.

Playing with a play driver like Burakovsky or even Bjorkstrand, Seattle has a deep enough roster to fight for a wild card spot.

We may have a better offensive to score enough for a wild card spot but the issue remains is will our GAA drop enough for that wild card spot.

Not sure if this was common knowledge or not but Wright is one of the players at the BioSteel NHL camp this year. Based on what I can tell is they have 30 players and prospects at this camp. Some of the names I saw based on the short video were:

Wright
MacKinnon
Makar
Bedard
McDavid
Tavares
Patrick Kane
Eichel
Oleksiak
Hanafin

Hopefully he can watch and pick the brains of some of these star players and learn.

That’s a hell of a list right there. If that’s 1/3 of the total attendees, Wright is going to learn a lot.

How Habs fans have been treating the slafkovsky vs Wright thing is really getting on my nerves. Especially the narrative that he has problems and that’s why he dropped in the draft. And he’s super cocky slafkovsky is way better etc.. Can’t wait to see him fill Montreal’s net with pucks. Right now that’s the team I personally am disliking the most right now. Can’t wait to see Shaner in a Kraken sweater soon great opportunity to make the roster this year

The he has an ego/attitude problem...

or he doesn't "work" hard enough and is basically a lazy player hence why he dropped. No one seem to acknowledge that the lost 20-21 OHL season impacted the players to the point not having quite as good, great etc 21-22 season. it sure did impact wright. Cause of that lost season wright start of the 21-22 was very very rusty and a result of that lost season he had to be very cautious is he doesn't push himself too hard to the point he causes an injury.

If wright pushed himself too hard and cause a sending ending injury he out of 3 years in the OHL he should had, he would only had 1 full OHL season and that was his rookie year at age 15 and that would have caused him to drop and drop way way more than he did. Maybe even out of the first round.

Wright was cautious for the right reason he didn't want to put himself into that situation where he loses another season. He's being trashed cause of that.

On the other hand Slaf had a meh club career at his pre draft club and somehow cause of a couple tournaments he suddenly leap and was 1OA. All cause of 2 tournaments during his draft year. Slaf statistically shouldn't have leap over wright imo. Recently bias is a thing.

I think Montreal fans are jealous. We have Wright and they don't. If montreal drafted wright, they would be praising the guy but since they didn't and are disappointed, they are taking that frustration that Montreal didn't draft Wright and putting all the blame on the player basically creating an excuse of the "well he stinks we didn't want him anyways".

Don't misunderstand me Slaf is going to be a good nhl player just as Wright will be. I think Slaf is a bit more over rated than wright is. Wright has stuff that impacted him as well as other OHL players that is beyond their own control. Wright can't control whether the league canceled a season.

Wright should have had 3 OHL season which in theory would have put him more pre-draft developed than Slaf would be imo. Then again i have no idea if European hockey around that age group has a similar age requirements/restrictions. A 15 year old CHL prospect can only play 5 games in the jr majors unless his current club season ended. Wright was exempt from that age 15 restriction.

Meh. I would not worry about that too much. It's not like the fans had any say or control over who got drafted. But now that Slaf is a Hab, it is in their best interests that he turns out to be a good player. But that will not be enough for some Habs fans since they need him to be better than Wright and feel the need to justify why Wright dropped. Most of this talk is likely to come from fans who actually wanted Wright, but now feel the need to go trash Wright to make them feel better about who their team selected.

This is easy for us. We just cared about getting a good player. Now we have a good player with a chip on his shoulder who can develop without the pressure of a big market team in Canada.

The physical and technical development of players like Owen Beck and Pavel Mintyukov was remarkable. Both missed that season when the OHL shut down, as did most of the players they and Wright were playing against. I do think that the lost season was a big setback for Wright and also that scouts are right to be a bit nervous if conditioning was such a problem for him and not a problem for so many others.

Here a CH Montreal fan arriving in peace.

Humbly, I think the real debate in the next few years regarding Wright's selection will be between him, Cutter Gauthier (drafted a little later than Wright by the Flyers) and Cooley.

And did you notice how the Flyers delegation ran on the stage to select this competitive and offensive monster as soon as you selected Wright?

They didn't wait and went directly for Gauthier.

Slavkovsky vs Wright....boff two really different players selected for different reasons.

Wright Vs Cutter Gauthier Vs Cooley, now you have a fight!

Wright will make your club this year ? Sure!

I think Gauthier will do the same with the Flyers!
This will allow us to analyze these two players with great interest in 2022.

Good pre-season Seattle ;)

It's not Wright vs Slafkovsky in Montreal. It's Wright vs Dach. Don't let anyone tell you otherwise.
