Prospect Info: Shane Wright (Round 1, Pick #4, 2022 draft)

Is there any meaning to what Wright says, "Kraken country, let's glide"?
Is that a play on Russell Wilson's "Let's ride"?
Yeah guessing he's taking the piss out of Wilson.

Honestly, with Wilson gone and most of the seahawks heroes retired, the city is looking for some sporting heroes.

Julio Rodriguez might assume that mantle soon but there's plenty of room for Kraken players to step up in the coming years.

My advice to you (and anyone else) is not to leave our boards if the preference is not to hear others trash our prospects or players.

To me, it was not shocking that Wright did not go 1OA. I felt that he didn't interview the best. Add that to the fact that he did not have the 'expected' season of a 1OA pick AND also the fact that he was supposed to perform like a player granted exceptional status; he most certainly did enough to raise the question if he deserved to go 1OA or not. Slaf has a tremendous Olympics and end of his season to boost his draft status as well. Same can be said of Nemec except that he was more consistent through the season.

For us, Wright was the perfect player to fall. I have read many scouting reports on him, and in all honesty he has been scouted as a fairly above-average player in most categories. The area he has been exceptional at is playmaking/passing and elite vision. However, his compete level has been questioned by several scouts. To me, that is less of a concern than how fans of other teams would treat it. The reason, for me, is simply because his elite vision and playmaking let him get away without that high-end compete. That will not work in the NHL. And he has a perfect partner in Beniers to learn that from. You need a motor and work hard no matter what your skill level is. And now he also has a chip on his shoulder. If he chooses to play with that, he will make other teams question not picking him earlier than us.

But all that will take a few years to see.

I was at the NHL draft and the reaction to the Habs not taking Wright was something I'll never forget - the collective gasp of twenty thousand people! Everyone was shocked - and what wasn't shown on TV, was Wright throwing his arms up as if to say "What the f***" - then he claps and nods his head, which is what was shown on TV.

Then, with each pick that went by without picking him, that gasp was there. It was really a strange experience. The famous stare too went on past what they showed on TV. He walked right past where I was sat, eyes glued on the Habs table... it was eerie and weird.

That said, I think if the Kraken can fix his attitude - you'll have a great player on your hands. Just wanted to share my story with you all.

When Slafkovsky entered the Bell Center, he was boo'd by Habs fans... then we drafted him! He was as shocked as everyone else in the building was when he was picked first.

The attitude is something that has been bought up a few times. And that could have been an issue during his interviews and may have been one of the reasons he dropped. However, there has been none of that seen in training camp, or pre-season. Maybe just dropping to 4th was the chip on his shoulder that he needed for the rest of his career. As a Packers fan, I always remember when Rodgers kept dropping.

Not everyone interviews well.

According to this, Wright is projected to play the full season with Kraken.

Interesting to see if he really is ready but the front office sure likes him.

I was out on vacation all of last week and have been down with a cold since the weekend. I did not watch all the games but caught some and here is what I thought of Wright:

- His passing is already next level. He sees lanes most established NHL players don't.
- Does not panic under pressure when being forechecked in his own zone. Makes short quick passes to get the puck out.
- Has a very defensively responsible game on both sides of the ice.

The offense needs work but he has improved as the pre-season has gone on and I would not be surprised if he starts chipping in within the first 9 games of the regular season. I do not expect him to contribute offensively like Beniers is doing, not yet anyway, but I would not be shocked if Wright ends up with 30-45 points this season.

Imo the only ppl harping on this attitude nonsense are the 70% of Habs fans that were on the Wright bandwagon prior to the draft and needed a justification to support who we did pick. Majority of Habs fans wanted Wright. Now on our boards it is poster after poster, many of those same posters who wanted him selected have jumped on this poor attitude train. I see no evidence of a kid with a poor attitude.

I certainly didn't think it was that obvious.

I have some degree of trust in Francis that he has a plan here but I'm also wary of GMs getting too attached to their prospects and not patiently developing them. My other club last year had Cole Sillinger in the NHL all year and I thought it was a terrible idea for his development. I think when you're developing a guy you want to play at the top of your lineup, you want them to dominate at lower levels first and have a fully tricked out skill set. If Wright stays up we are going to be asking him to do things vs NHLers that he barely knows how to do vs kids. A lot of prospects lose confidence and stall out that way.

Problem is you risk having the player not advancing in development by sending him back in wrights case back to the OHL Wright problem is he's not AHL eligable. So its either OHL or the NHL and this case NHL would be the better option for his development.

Shane gains nothing from going back to Kingston. He is staying he has the brain for the game and just needs to get up to speed this is the year for that. I think you throw Schwartz on his line and call it good

I was thinking the same thing - maybe that was the wake-up call he needed.

Concerning Wright, I would err on the side of caution, but Francis seems to be leaning in the other direction. Let's see how the kid looks in his nine game debut before coming to any hasty decision about where he should spend the season
