Prospect Info: Shane Wright (Round 1, Pick #4, 2022 draft)

Wright should be eased into the league, especially if you have a veteran guy like Gourde as well.

If you watched the development camp you could clearly see that Beniers was head and shoulders above anyone attenting and that's not surprising.
Beniers already played two years of college hockey and got ten games in the NHL last season while a guy like Wright missed a complete season and is directly out of junior hockey.

By the end of the season things might look differently, but to start his career you don't overwhelm the kid by playing him that high up the lineup.

BTW: There's also not much of a difference between our first and second line, when it comes to playing time, which means that 1st line thing with Beniers isn't that much of a thing.
Yeah. I am optimistic that he does crack the roster and does so in the top-9 but expecting him to be a 2C before he even plays a single NHL game and being all of 18 years is very optimistic.

Beniers also did not start in the NHL till after the college hockey season was over, so got a lot of exposure and development time there. My hope is we start Wright as either 3C or 3W and see how it goes. Training camp and the 1st 9 games should give us an idea of how he fits in the top-9. If he looks like he needs more development time, he may need to go back to juniors though I really hope he sticks around (in the top-9) since I don't know if juniors really do him any good at this time.

Or maybe he just surprises us and easily fits into the top-9. He will probably push himself pretty hard till training camp to get ready for the NHL. He has a good hockey IQ and is already close to 200 lbs, so is pretty NHL-ready from that perspective.

I concur that Wright will start as the 3C and within a a couple of years it will Beniers and Wright at 1A,1B with Goyette,Winterton and MacDonald battling for the reminder of the center ice time down the road. Going to be fun watching these players develop especially Matty and Shane into Stars

I'm really happy for Wright. I think this is a huge optics win for him.

First, he get's to avoid the hockey crazed media in Montreal. I really don't 'buy' the story that he stared down the table. Second, he gets to start fresh in a new franchise and learn the ropes from there. Playing with Berniers, they can develop into a solid 1-2 pivot and build from there.

Infuriatingly, there will always be the Slaf vs Wright debate (until one cools off vs the other - ala Matthews vs. Laine)

People are just too obessed on how he has an ego and an attitude... People have a right to be emotional on stuff.

idk I’d rather have a passionate player who believes in himself than a cold, emotionless machine but that’s just me

Have any of you watched Welcome to the NHL on ESPN+? It's a documentary following around a half dozen draftees at the 2022 NHL draft including Wright (who gets the most time overall). Definitely a GREAT watch. I think it might be on youtube as well.

I think overall it paints him in the exact light we all have been discussing. It shook him a bit and upset him, but he totally kept his cool. You can see WHY he might be disappointed as there was a lot of excitement from Montreal fans about him and he seemed very excited as well. Totally looks like it took everybody off guard.

its on youtube.

I had Wright going to the Kraken at first overall last year. First Beniers and now Wright too go with Winterton,Goyette and MacDonald. Safe to say GM Francis can have his scouts scour the globe for Wingers and Defense for the next 10-15 years

Montreal's total Brain fart is Seattle's Center Super-Star gain. GM Francis was taken 4th overall in 1981 and he's a Hall-Of-Famer

I was actually surprised by how collected he was as he was getting passed over. When the Coyotes took Cooley, he said "that hurts". He's recognizing his own feelings and processing them maturely. I was surprised because the media drumroll for him to go #1 was so over the top, you don't expect an 18 year old come down from that easily.

Another thing that I caught was that there is likely no earthly way he was looking at the Montreal table when he "lost his smile" (fun reference for any pro wrestling fans out there). His gaze was locked on the same place as when smiling. It also didn't seem nearly as harsh from the angle taken on the documentary.

That stuff is quite strange to me.
Absolutley no one ever questioned Wright's work ethic up until yesterday when they've got to find a reason to try and explain why he fell to #4.

In the end, every prospect has got to show they're NHL players, but I find that one strange.

I don't like those Bergeron comparisions.

They're always thrown in there once you've got a center with 200 feet awareness and offensive limitations, at least the moment they're drafted.

Both Wright and Bergeron, looking at their draft years, also have onle little in common.

Wright was a guy that had scored at McDavid level during his 15 year old season, showed great offensive skills/leathel shot and got exceptional status.
He then lost a full season and couldn't replicate that season during his draft year.

Bergeron was a skinny kid that started his draft year out on the third line, worked his way up to the first line and then ended up being the best player on his team.
Though, everyone saw the talent, but it was clear he needed time to fill out his body and those guys usually fall in a draft.
And those guys usually turns out to be the best. Those are the players that needs to compensate with technics, pressing their playingsenses anď instincts to the limit to stand against bigger players. Senses and vision is incredible hard to learn past teenage.

Im buffled NHL scouts still havnt learned. Still drafting 6"4 Baffons, that only has size and maybe a shot and skating.
Many of those ebds up either bustibg or bottom 6ers without hands, great hockey sense or finnish.

As a Packers fan, I get serious Rodgers vibes from Wright. Not the cockiness or arrogance but the chip on the shoulder and to prove that every team who picked a different player ahead of him made a mistake.
Only can hope and through hard determination can prove them wrong. Think he was meant for Seattle though and probably will work in his favor. Montreal is very tough market to play in and let's be honest probably had big sigh of relief that the Coyotes did not pick him. No offense to any Coyote fans but the way they handled the team is shockingly bad for a professional team!

Seattle bound

There are a few NHL bound guys in the tournament. McTavish will be in the NHL this Fall, and maybe Kent Johnson.

My guess is that the Kraken don't want to interrupt Shane's summer focus on strength and conditioning. That could be true even if they don't expect him to make the Kraken lineup this Fall. Getting stronger and more energetic are the things he needs to work on regardless of where they see him playing next year.

Can also add reddit to the list where some people are just out right trashing the guy.
