The count for suspended games started already at the beginning of the season.
Really? That would seem strange since he isn't signed.

I would think games don't count til he is signed and actually eligible to play.

Lol, this actually appears to be a good thing. I couldn't give a shit about any morality issues with how hard the league shoves gambling down our throats, so really it just solved our cap issues and he's already served 6 of the 41 games. If Greig can keep playing well, this seems to be a pretty solid solution, as bizarre as it is.

Bailed out of the cap situation I meant.

We likely won't have to pay a team to dump Joseph/Kubalik/Brannstrom anymore.

Even if he signs his QO right before game 42, the adjusted cap would be ~1.75M.

So we'll need to accumulate that amount of room (via injuries through the first half of the season), or we'll still need to trade someone.

It buys the team time. But it still doesn't make it easy.

How is the team bailed out? He isnt playing 41 or more games.
Well, 41 games for off ice conduct should mean his cap hit is effectively cut in half. We might end up being able to fit him in at the midpoint with no significant move.

Theory: Pinto didn't bet on "NHL games". Doesn't preclude that he could've bet on props though right? MVP, Vezina, President's trophy, etc.
Yeah this is what I was thinking tbh, probably not Presidents trophy though as that is much closer related to actual game outcomes.

Edit: seems like it wasn’t this though

You alright man?
3:3 record

By game 8 (against Pit and NYI) they may be 3 : 5

see last year and see how many 3 : 5 teams made the playoffs?

so, this season could end on the weekend.

season 7 out of the playoffs

and the merry-go-around continues. Players lost, players failing to develop. Those not lost and have developed are starting to age.

Buffalo 12 years out so far
Vancouver 8 of 10 years out so far
Arizona 10 of 11 out so far
Ottawa 8 of 10 years out....so far

Great company

No Pinto until mid to late January at the earliest. This buys Dorion some time. He is still tight to the cap but the leaving Pinto to rot on the sidelines he escapes. Lots can happen between now and mid January. Dorion could not have to deal with this by then. Its like hoping for someone to return from war ... Every day you hope for that good news.

I suspect there will either be long-term injuries to this team or to other teams that free up cap space and allow for us to dump a guy like Kubalik or Brannstrom without getting extorted.

The NHL: Sports wagering is a terrible look on the league and we will suspend you half a season even if you bet on another sport legally.

Also the NHL: This game brought to you by Bet99! Now here is our DraftKings opening faceoff! Yay!

If Pinto's QO is $874k, how much cap space do we need at the 42 game mark?

$1.748 m ($847 x 2 = $1.748)?

That's not what the NHL is alleging happened. Seravalli is suggesting that Pinto was giving information to a third party, who was betting NHL games as a proxy for Pinto.

Hopefully we get the actual details. But he almost certainly wasn't just placing NFL bets.

Why would we wait until game 42 to sign him to a QO (assuming somehow his QO is still valid)?

I can't see the league saying he's both suspended, and also not allowed to sign a contract, that would just mean there's no financial punishment to him since he can't forfeit his pay when he doesn't have a contract

This is what I took from it and they dont have a really good player for half the year.

Do people really think Dorion is still the GM by January? I really hope not. That means they likely have the same coach.

It's in a tweet that was posted in here not long ago - #207 & #114. I believe the tweet was from Friedman.
Oh ok a silver lining I guess.

I am also worried about the damage this could do to the relationship with the organization.

In his article Garrioch explained the Sens and Pinto were very close to an extension and the Sens were working on clearing cap to make it happen, then they were advised by the league to not sign him until the investigation was over.

This wasn't 4D chess. This was Pinto doing something dumb and unintentionally bailing us out.
Dorion is a genius… again?

If Pinto's cap is $874k, wouldn't we need $1.748 m of cap space to insert him into the lineup at the game 42 mark?
Why wait until the 42 game mark if both parties agree to that contract though. Doesn't rh cap remain 874k prorated to today if he signs today?

Probably but there is a lot of time and lot of things that can happen between now and then.
That picture will clear up more accurately as we get closer to mid January.

Or they could be 5-3 and off to a good start.

This. I want to know this…
What is the realistic optimal outcome for the Sens here?

This investigation has probably been ongoing for a few weeks. The NHL probably advised the Sens not to sign him then and the expected contract has been in a holding pattern for the first part of the season.

I hope he is. Because it's the only scenario where this team is in the playoff picture.
He can get canned in the offseason in this case for all I care.
