I suspect it's because the NHL told the Sens not to sign him until the investigation was over.

So the games he missed due to not being signed before the investigation was complete count towards the suspension.
In a weird way, I guess it helps...at least if we figure out the cap crunch he can be back for the 2nd half of the season.

His agent is probably banking on the Senators needing Pinto to make a playoff push. Basically, an own-rental.

The issue with waiting to sign is that it makes it more difficult to do anything other than a 1 year deal unless someone with a big cap hit is on LTIR for the rest of the season.
His agent wants him to get paid as much as possible do you want to know why? Because His agent gets 10% of what he signs for.

I made a post on the other page explaining what happened in the gambling industry. Certain states and now Ontario "legalized" gambling. Nothing changed in regards to sports betting you could always sportsbet the new legislation made it so they could advertise it and force the gambling companies to pay the government. If you watch a broadcast from a team in a state where gambling isn't legal you won't see any ads. "Legalization" of it just means the government is getting money and letting them advertise.
Isn't the league still basically rolling with that though? The govt opened it up in those places, but it's still their choice to move forward with them as advertising partners is it not? And didn't the Senators just sign up with one directly?

So, it seems the best thing the team can do for their cap situation in January is sign him ASAP, right?

This is absolutely perplexing.

How can a suspension start for him for games he couldn't even play in?

The NHL has some weird rules

Also, in regards to some posts here - why would the cap hit double for the 2nd half of the season? If we sign him to $1M wouldn't the hit be <$500k if there is less than 1/2 a season to go?
I think people are thinking about what happened with Nylander when he had his contract dispute and didn't sign until just before December 1. If I recall correctly, Nylander's cap hit for that current (1st year under the new contract) actually increased. But, I have been trying to confirm that.

It's the other way around to discourage geniuses like Pierre playing waiting games.
this is clearly a different situation than the Nylander hold out

suspending Pinto is penalizing Pinto. At the 41 game mark doubling the cap hit is penalizing Ottawa.

I understand what you are saying, just not sure it applies here

Well all major sports should be partnered with gambling companies that's just common sense. Why would any league leave millions of dollars out of their pockets? The networks are responsible for commercials and in any state where its not legalized you won't see ads on those broadcasts.

The suspended time doesn't count against the cap since it's for off ice conduct, so they'd only need to make space by game 42 when he's eligible to play.
OK. So, if this is the case, Pinto would be getting paid less (actual $s) than the league minimum. Just thinking out loud.

I read the typical agent fee is 5% but yeah,

At least it's not like real estate where the buyer's agent is incentivized to have you bid higher so that your offer wins and wins quicker, while the selling agent is incentivized to convince you to accept lower offers to close the sale quick and move onto the next sale since 2.5% of 10-50k extra isn't worth the hassle to them when they can move onto the next client and work towards 2.5% on the entire listing of another place.

Yeah it was higher that first year.

Why are you like this?
Seriously? The kid just shit the bed. He's not even appealing the suspension (because he knows its fully his fault) and has put his team in a massive hole. All because of his own idiotic behaviour. I think a lot of fans are rightfully pissed at this nonsense. This isn't just a whoopsie.

Okay, I get it. So imo the blame lies with both parties in that case, but I see what you mean with the govt being the ones that allowed those ads to be aired.

a pro rated amount is what i suspect happens

the good news here is that we can sign two contracts at the same time...a cheapie 23-24 contract and a 2nd contract for however many years to square up the cheapie deal...kinds works out like a backloaded deal

Ottawa is only making the QO, so the offer is something like 1.11M.

If that doesn't count for half the year then Ottawa would currently be around 350K short of being able to simply re-add him.

I don't know how the suspension works, but it may be in Pinto's best interest to accept the QO to get the credit for games played.

Why? I highly doubt anyone in Ottawa management cares that much about this. He'll probably have to take a short term deal this year, but I wouldn't be surprised to see them sign him to an 8 year deal in the summer.
This will probably ruin the team-player relationship. You doubt that Ottawa management cares that he made a bonehead move that prevents him from helping his teammates out for half a season? Obviously we are awaiting the details, but it sounds like he was betting on hockey through a proxy.

I doubt the Sens feel any pressure to make Pinto whole for the 41 games he will miss OR for only paying him league min.

It sounds more like he was giving his friends a heads-up on certain things so they could bet on hockey. With how popular gambling is among young men and how accessible it is, I imagine the NHL is trying to set an example for other young players who are also, almost certainly, in group chats where their buddies from home talk about bets.

If there was evidence that he was profiting from someone betting on NHL games, I think the suspension would be much harsher.
